What is with people not calling you back to let you know that you didn’t get the job or the room in the house?
Sure, you might feel bad about it, but think about all the constant wondering and stress you’ll be relieving the person of.
I, for one, am tired of waiting a week with no reply to realize that I wasn’t the recipient of what I wanted.
It might be a bit of a hassle, but to me it just seems like common decency. —Tired of not knowing

likely because it’s the onus on you to call them to ask if it’s been taken….
were I to get 100 resumes… I don’t think I’d be calling 99 people to piss them off.
If they truly wanted the job, I would expect to hear back from them within a few days to see….
I always ask the interviewer afterward when exactly he/she we let me know by than if you haven’t heard by then…
Another one who thinks the world revolves around them.
I can see why employers might not call if you didn’t get an interview, but if you’ve interviewed someone (you’re not going to be interviewing 100+ people, likely) it would be nice to call them to tell them either way — ESPECIALLY if you said you would. And not like three months later. I’ve had both happen: not getting called back to tell me I didn’t get hired when they said they actually would and when they do call back it’s usually an email 3 months later. Why? because many people are too chicken shit to break bad news to someone.
Are you kidding? Why would tell take time out of their busy lives to call you!? You’re not doing anything, you’re supposed to call them! It shows initiative. I wouldn’t want to hire someone that’s too lazy to pick up the phone, and many employers will only hire people that call them back.
That being said, I still have had trouble with employers not wanting to come out and tell me I didn’t have the job. I had an interview at a certain large office supplies DEPOT and it went really well. The woman interviewing me said I had nothing to worry about, and that they would call me next Tuesday. Tuesday comes and goes, no call. I call them back on Wednesday and she says “Sorry I’ve been busy, I’ll call you next Monday”. Ok. So Monday comes, no call. I call her back Tuesday and all she says to me is “the position has been filled *hang up*”. I’m sorry if I didn’t get the hint that “I’ll call you next week” meant that I didn’t get the job. One place went as far as to tell me to go out and BUY certain things for the uniform and told me to call in 2 days for my schedule. I called them back in two days and they said “Sorry there’s no job for you”. Thanks. I returned all the stuff I just bought.
Why can’t YOU just pick up the phone and call? After the date they said they’d call you on, it is all up to you to make the move. Call and say you would like to be updated on the selection process and that you are very interested in the position. If you get a rejection, ask what advice they can give you so you’ll improve for next time.
best thing to do, act like you really don’t want whatever, you would be surprised how many times that works. and it also works for a whole lot of other things too. guys, girls, deals on cars, land, and of course sex.
So what you are saying is, all this time you have been self sabotaging, LS?
LOL my dad told me the same thing, LS. He said he went into an interview once and they asked him “so, what can you do for us” and he said “actually, I must ask YOU ‘what can you do for ME?'”
They hired him on the spot. heh.
Also: it’s not hard to tell if they’re just selling you a line. I went in for a part time job at a certain TELEphone job at a call centre and they said they’d call me for an interview the next day. No call. They were still interviewing others that day so it was kind of a tip off.
most places tell you upfront that they’ll only call if you have the job/abode
Maybe there should be a Grade 11 course entitled: how to get a job after high school. If you fail, you have to go onto Grade 12, finish high school, and go to a college/uni.
I understand it’s a hassle to call how ever many people and crush their spirts. But would an email really be that hard? Just write one and change the names. And send it within a week, not a month later assholes.
I had an interview a certain Call Centre and the guy acted like I had the job. Then I didn’t hear from them for a month until I got an email. Fuck, I don’t miss looking for work.
I had an interview was told to “call on Friday if you haven’t heard from me” so I called on Friday then Monday and Thursday, the following Monday and Friday and Tuesday of the 3rd week. I left 6 messages and didn’t even get a call back.
That’s just fucking rude, just tell me I didn’t get the job. And don’t tell me to call when you obviously don’t want me to
I recently dealt with some bitchy HR lady after the office I applied with decided their workload was too much, passed if off to another regional office and told me to call the other HR contact and that they’d forwarded all my info to the this person. So I call her and she chats for 20 minutes and asked me to call a week later. When I called her she laid into me, ranting about how the other office was forcing their work onto her, etc etc and that my application wasn’t something she wanted to deal with.
I politely apologised (for something I didn’t do) and said I’d go back to the original contact, that person then passed me onto her replacement (they worked alternate 2-week stints) and he dragged things out for his 2 weeks, telling me to call contact #1 again.
Finally got fed up enough to call their Canadian head office and the assistant HR manager said my file hadn’t even made it to their office for final consideration. The assistant manager is supposed to call me this Tuesday or Wednesday and was very, very apologetic for the runaround I’d received.
Not holding out much hope on it after an 8 week process but a surprise would be nice!
Alright, opinion guys (I’ve always wanted to know this for sure): I’m sure it varies, but if an organization has a cut off date, how long should you expect to wait regarding an interview request? In my experiences it’s been pretty quick, but I can’t really pin down if this is the norm or not in the grand scheme of things….or should I dash any hope of getting an interview/the job itself if say, the cut off date was last tuesday? I’d cut off my right arm for this job (and I have every single one of the qualifications and more!)…
You sound desperate.
*yawn*
It really depends on the employer. Some would say you called too late when you call a day before the deadline, others would say don’t call us we will call you, and then if it is the government, they will call you back in 6 months (and of course, don’t call them.)
I think you can call them and say that you wanted to make sure they received your application because you are very interested in the position, and that you would like an update on where the process is at. Most human resource people would not mind (too much) answering those questions if they didn’t make that clear when you applied for the job.
Just rest those two beautiful things in my mouth
