Same reason why, if you have a pool in your back yard, you HAVE to have a fence, BY LAW, cause children may wander in, try and swim and drown…. Then YOU are at fault for not providing proper fencing around your pool! The city is covering its ass!!
this city and its asinine bylaws make me mental!we don’t need to be coddled and protected from every goddamn thing!and if parents are too fucking stunned to make sure their kids don’t drown in a public fountain… so be it!!!
Because todays new parents of the 21st Century are fucking idiots. Why, back in my day you wouldn’t see a toddler standing up inside a shopping cart, they’d be sitting in the seat provided. Think about it.
if they’re fencing off the fountains, with their few centimetres of water, what are they going to do about that big harbour? CLEARLY if a fountain in a threat the harbour is a death trap!
I miss Montreal, with the open fountains. I’m pretty sure they would have the same laws regarding pools and fences as we do, though. When I was a kid in the 20th Century, we had to have a fence around our pool, so the laws regarding pools and fencing in Nova Scotia have been around for awhile. Um, and what’s wrong with having a child stand in a shopping cart, Cranky? It’s fun and quite often the space provided for youngsters legs to fit through in the childseat are small, scratchy or even, *shudder* rusty AND scratchy. I’ve never seen a kid or an adult get hurt by having a ride in a shopping cart.On a happy note:The public gardens has a fountain without fencing and I’ve seen a few people blissfully dipping their toes in on hot July days. Very nice… : )
and ps.. I just wunna throw it out there that I was only guessing thats why they fence the fountians.. Can any one confirm if my guess is correct or incorrect??
Maybe they want to keep the squeegie kids from bathing in it???
Lori, I would strongly encourage the squeege kids to bathe in it.CaTLaDY, I’m pretty sure the fences are there to keep everybody out. Your not meant to enjoy a dip in the fountain, at any age.
FWIW, the fountain in the Common is fenced because when the built the thing back in the 60s (it’s officially the “Centennial Fountain”), the didn’t think about people actually getting in it– the high-voltage cables running the motors run right through the water. It’s not that you’ll get shocked, but rather you’d trip over the things, is the argument. Right now they’re re-engineering the entire fountain, putting in new pumps. The second stage, which hasn’t been funded, is to put the cables underground and take the fence away.
speaking of montreal’s open fountains…a PUBLIC fountain is not just some visual attraction to be ‘observed’ from the other side of a goddamn fence… think about it!as Lilac said, montreal does it right… there are NO fences, and the public is not coddled and kept reigned-in from enjoying themselves. christ, in montreal, one can actually sit in a public park and enjoy a beer with their friends or even smoke a joint on mont royal (without getting harrassed by police)… now THAT is civilized!and further to cranky’s comments, if parents are too fucking idiotic to actually PARENT their OWN kids, and keep them SAFE (from drowning or otherwise) then they do not deserve to have kids, period! why should the rest of us have to sacrifice our civil liberties at the expense of lazy & stupid parents??FREEDOM in life doesn’t come without some risk… we don’t all need nurse-maiding and to be ‘protected’ from everything.treat people like little kids… and they’re gonna behave as suchthen again, maybe maritimers need coddling, and aren’t as civilized and sophisticated as i’d hoped
there’s a nice fountain in bishop’s landing that’s really fun to run through..
