How does the government (federal and provincial) plan on playing for these refugees that are “supposedly” on their way? This province has a unemployment rate of eight percent. Many residents are leaving this fine province because they can not find work. Those leaving are both skilled and professional so the argument that the new refugees will help grow the economy and jobs will not work. This province is more than $14 billion in debt. Housing is unaffordable to a great many Nova Scotians as it is, and a good paying job is impossible to find. So many Nova Scotians live in poverty, live with mental illness and addiction problems as is. Why not fix what is already broken here first before you blow a shit ton on money that you don’t have on refugees that will be a financial drain on an already drained province? This is not a black, white, brown, yellow problem; this is a bitch about remembering who is already here and in need of help as it is. I heard on the radio the other day that all these refugees from Syria would be jumping ahead of thousands of refugees that have waited years on the list to come to Canada. Why is one refugee more important than another? There are refugees already here in Nova Scotia metaphorically and figuratively speaking. Wake up and smell the roses, government. —Tired of Watching Canada Ignore Canadians

  1. You’re a day too late. Yesterday was Conservatives-cry-about-their-loss-by-way-of-posting-bitches Day. You should have spoken to Stephen much earlier when he was he decrying hijabs…

  2. You ask why is one refugee more important then another, yet you feel a Canadian is more important then either refugee. I can honestly say the very worst off Canadian is doing much, much better then the folks coming out of Syria.

  3. Did you ever consider that the Syrian refugees would probably be grateful for work that most Canadians readily reject? There’s a lot of laziness among Canadians who would rather collect welfare than put in an honest day’s work. Your argument is spoken like a true CPC sore loser. Your conservative mantra of ‘divide & conquer’ will never be o.k.

  4. There are more Syrian refugees than all the others that are waiting combined from different conflicts and Syrian refugees are putting a strain on our allies that we support, we are not only helping these refugees but helping our allies, is that wrong? Canada dose have the money for this, we set aside millions for desasters around the world that we pay out every year even when we were under the conservative government.

  5. The money will come from the same place as all the money, since the first dollar made from valueless paper was printed, came from… Thin fucking air!

We’re all slaves, paying back debt that doesn’t exist. He who dies with the most debt wins!

  6. Spiggy may have some dislikes for what he says, but he’s not wrong. I’ve personally seen examples of his point. “I’m too proud to work at Mcdonalds…so I’ll remain on EI/Social Assistance”. “I need steel toed boots to work there”…”Here are free work boots”….continued “excuses”.

Ignoring those facts is not doing anyone any favours, except those few bad apples that cheat the system. Not at all advocating for removing EI and social assistance, just saying that abuse exists whether we want to admit it or not.

As for Refugees, bring em over here. No reason we can’t help them and Canadians at the same time.

  7. I feel the same. The money the government is willing to put in to help these people could go towards the Canadians already here struggling. Maybe someday when our own are finally in a better place yeah sure help them out but until then they shouldn’t be bringing anyone new here. It makes me mad that the government is willing to help them but not there own. I know so many trying to get ahead and having a hard go of it and the government rather help them!!! Canadians need that money a lot more than they need our help right now. Let alone the other issues that come with bringing them in after what happened in Paris. Yeah sure there not all like that but how are we to know the right from wrong till its too late.

  8. Hey Pinky, ya know, it isn’t “us versus them”, WE are the human race–and if WE cannot even be slightest bit humane, especially when our fellow humans are losing so much at the hands of insanity, well what chance do WE have? The “me first” and “we need” attitudes need to stop. We are living in one of the safest places in the world right now. I think our “me first” should speak more to us lending a hand to those less fortunate, and our “we need’ should be called out as a predominant ” we WANT”. And one last thought: I would not debate the fact that there are many Canadians that do require help and guidance on myriad socia snd medical levels; but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one, and helping those less fortunate than ourselves provides great perspective, motivation, and self esteem–suddenly things that seemed impossible to us are firmly within our sights and grasps, but this can only happen if WE ALL work together.

  9. 1. The idea that refugees take away jobs from Canadians doesn’t hold water. We already have a temporary foreign worker program for jobs that are hard to fill – like working in restaurant kitchens. Due to their initial language skills, refugees often end up in those sorts of jobs.
And their children in turn become well educated, contribute to our economy, and end up paying the taxes that go to look after our less fortunate. Just look at the impact waves of Greek and Lebanese immigrants have had. How many businesses do they and their descendants own and how many “Canadians” do they employ?

    2. To put risk in perspective, the chances of a refugee committing a terrorist attack that kills you is microscopic and you are far more at risk of being murdered by a person born in Canada or simply being killed in an accident.

    3. The RCMP and CSIS (who are paid to worry about safety) are not concerned about plans to bring in refugees. “Added Mr. Coulombe, the director of CSIS: “I am confident that the measures in place are robust and … appropriate.”

  10. Isn’t Canada in a position to help others on a global scale? Yet the predominant attitude here is that we have to help ourselves. No Canadian born in this country has seen true poverty, hunger, homelessness, forced relocation or life threatening prosecution. We may think we have it tough at times (and some of us might on a first world level) but would any of you stand next to a displaced refugee and say we need to help our over indulgent government dependent asses first?

  11. Turkey has taken in 1.9 million
    Lebanon has taken 1.1 million
    Germany: 98.700
    Sweden: 64,700
    France:6,700
    U.K. 7,000
    Denmark:11,300
    Hungary: 18,000

25,000 is a drop in the bucket for a country the size of Canada. Ironically the same people who are against taking in refugees are often in favour of continuing to bomb that region (which is what creates refugees). These people say they aren’t racist or hateful AND I BELIEVE THEM. I don’t think they are racist and hateful, I think they are scared and ignorant — this is much worse.

  12. Pinky, you may not think of yourself as racist, but your statement about the training of women and children as terrorists was racist and was pulled. Maybe some self-reflection will cure your ails?!

  13. That was not racist. Its very possible they could do that. So don’t judge me just because I am one of the many who do not trust the whole situation. These people are not stupid and we should not underestimate what they are capeable of.

  14. Sooo im the one that actually wrote this bitch, I am absolutely loving the response and I am surprised this issue has not been addressed in this forum earlier. I have worked for an employment agency in the not to distant past, I have seen both sides of the argument that Canadians are too lazy/good to work at “mcdonalds” for instance, I can’t tell you the number on times that people would wait for their year of E.I to run out then come see me and be like, hey, um, my e.i is up I need a job, so yes, there are people that ride the system, that is a problem can be found in any part of the world where there is assistance programs, it is just some peoples human nature. BUT for the amount of people riding the system, there are at least twice the amount of people willing to work but can’t because of the fact they are homeless, don’t have an address or can’t afford the basic necessities to be able to work. My heart would break when people would come in, say they needed work, I asked if they had steel toe boots and they said they couldn’t afford them! I saw first hand the willingness to work, the desperation in their eyes but due to lack of money, they couldn’t. The old saying is you need money to make money. I am willing to be a large number of supporters of the refugees have not seen the other side of the coin in their own back yard. There are many issues I would love address here but I wont, I will stay with this one. Personally I am not a racist. BOTH…..BOTH my parents are immigrants to Canada……. and no not from the United States, from third world countries and both faced prosecution due to religion. So I want to separate the racism and fear factor. I am saying that a lot of the supporters of the refugees coming to Canada have a comfortable living, do not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, don’t rely on social assistance, are not freezing cold in the middle of the winter because they have to choose between feeding their family or turning on the heat. Do not have mental health issues and can not get the help they need because of the long wait times or just no help is available. I ask you to volunteer at a soup kitchen or food bank, see the need that is in this great country called CANADA, or even this great city Called Halifax, I am glad this bitch was published but do not agree with how the editors wrote “hate this town”. I actually love this town, that is why I am still here. I am however an educated very employable, healthy contributing member of society that is finding it impossible to gain employment in this city that will allow me to raise a family, buy a house or even pay rent with out going broke.

  15. Here’s the thing: Any refugee influx in Canadian history has been followed by a corresponding economic boost and expansion of the labour force, within a few years. Refugees are usually young, productive people who want to contribute to the country that’s admitted them. Refugees, in the long run, WILL be good for us. If you’re worried about the provincial debt, I don’t know why you’d have a problem bringing in a bunch of youngish people who, once they’re on their feet, will pay taxes and contribute to the local economy and culture.

In any case, we can’t make sure every single person born in Canada is employed before admitting newcomers. No city, town or province would every admit anyone new ever again. And anyway, an eight percent unemployment rate isn’t even that bad: the city of Toronto has a 7.4 percent rate, and it was over 10 percent as recently as 2013. Should they also stop accepting people? Not to mention, refugees will mostly be coming to Halifax, where the unemployment rate is 5.9 percent–one of the lowest in the whole country.

One more thing: If some smart, hard-working, well-educated newcomer gets a job ahead of a less-educated, less hard-working person born here, is that so bad? The labour market is a meritocracy. You don’t get dibs because you were here first. Ultimately, raising the standards of the local labour force will be good for the province, and Canada overall.

  16. I can’t stand posts like this.
Just fucking help out those poor people forced from the homes and left to wander the globe looking for acceptance.
Why is this even an issue? Why can’t people help their fellow humans? Why must you use money as an excuse to not help out?
I bet if your family was over there getting killed you would go into debt to help them out. Why wont you help a stranger?

  17. Where’s my post? What did I say that was so offensive? Was I wrong to support the Syrian refugees? I do not understand why my post was deleted. What kind of b*tch forum does this? Where’s the freedom of speech here? I thought this was a liberal-based outfit, not a bunch of nervous nellies. I called out those who are fearful & ignorant about the refugees and I’ve been censored for wanting to welcome these new citizens. I am not impressed. Not at all.

  18. My guess is that most of the people that don’t want to see the refugees come here are right-wing, religious nutjobs anyhoo, and we all know how racists/bigots love to hide behind their faith/fear.

  19. It happens to the best of us Spiggy… there’s a heavy hand at The Coast; one that did not study journalism and its ethics.

  20. Hey Canadian, if you have someone who needs steel toes for a job I would like to help out. I have ones that are in good shape that I don’t need. There is no reason not being able to buy steel toed boots should hold anyone up from work. Seems like something employers/government should be able to help out with.

  21. So Canadian Poster….your argument is we should deny the same rights that were granted to your parents because even though you have had the benefit of:
    1) being educated while living in a home that hasn’t been bombed out
    2) you get to live in a town where you can walk the streets without being in constant fear of being shot, killed, raped or stoned to death
    3) in a country that most of the time (not all) does the right and just and humane thing
…you can’t find a job that pays you what you think is enough?

  22. Let’s play make believe and pretend there were no refugees coming. Tomorrow do you think that we will have seen any more money going to support ‘us’, our homeless, our schools, our hospitals, our rotting infrastructure? No, not fucking likely.

  23. It touches my heart deeply to see so many conservatives suddenly give a shit about the hungry and homeless in Canada. I guess we can thank ISIL for that?

    sarcasm

  24. I gave a bunch of money to help bring in a refugee family and will undoubtedly do more. Would I do the same for some poor locals? No. Honestly I feel I have more in common with and more empathy for refugees- normal people forced to flee for their lives from psychopaths- than people suffering because of mental illness, drug problems or lack of education/employment who grew up in Canada, often caught in a cycle of poverty and victimhood. I have hope that the refugees will resume their productive lives and be greatful for the opportunity, whereas I feel dollars given here are more charity than an investment. While appreciated, they make little long term difference to people destined to struggle.

  25. We should be forcing their neighbours to take them in. Syrian refugees in Arab states:

    Saudi Arabia – 0
    Kuwait – 0
    Qatar – 0
    UAE – 0
    Bahrain – 0

What about other Muslim countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Mauritania Djibouti, etc. How many refugees are they taking? Not too many that I can find.
