To my High School teacher with an eastern block accent. What gives you the right to say “Most Canadians should not be allowed to vote”? Do you not realize how fundamentally fucked up your opinion is? If we replaced the voting power of Canadian citizens with any alternative, it would lead our country astray. I trust the will of Canadians more than I trust your elitist smug academic naive view of how this country should be run. —Soon to be Part of Democracy

I think I would have to tell him as a teacher to keep his personal opinions out of the classroom. They aren’t their to teach you what they think.
I hate know-it-all teachers.

Pity Immigration can get rid of him.
I beg to differ my dear Mel. Keegstra wasn’t a know-it-all. That pond life didn’t know if his asshole was punched or bored. >; )
Did you ask him why he thought that or did he explain it, I don’t agree with what he said but I would like to hear he’s logic behind the statement
I’m kinda with Robert Heinlein on this one.
– …the rights of a full Citizen (to vote, and hold public office) must be earned through some form of volunteer Federal service. Those residents who have not exercised their right to perform this Federal Service retain the other rights generally associated with a modern democracy (free speech, assembly, etc.), but they cannot vote or hold public office.
Heinlein’s theory is sound, Hugo; but ,in practice, it can only lead to Neil Patrick Harris in an SS uniform >: 0

Maybe the teacher was trying to provoke the class into engaging in a spirited debate on the issue? Is that within the realm of possibility? It’s a tried and true teaching method…
ask him, if canadians make such disastrous decisions, why he lives here instead of back home?
Hey. It’s an innocent question.
i have a very good friend (an immigrant) who is constantly talking about how much this country sucks compared to his homeland. At first i was really sensitive to his being homesick because having been an immigrant myself, i know that feeling. You really DO get homesick. Especially if the cultures are vastly different. But eventually i called him on his bullshit and basically asked him why, if this place sucks so much, why he not only chose to come here, but to stay here for 25 years.
he had no rational answer.
Good call IK, I have the same dilemma out here in BC. I miss family, friends, donairs, fake chinese food and at one time Beep, but I’ve realized that when you get to new place you should welcome the differences between the old and the new.
FFS … he says most Canadians should not be allowed to vote … perhaps he shouldn’t be allowed to teach. If he were, in fact, making this statement to provoke debate and deeper thinking on the subject considering how that right has evolved over the last 100 years … it should have been made clear to the students.
And, perhaps you should share this with your teacher … http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/charter/ … remind him that in Canada we have this thing called the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
I agree with Xeno. The bitch may be missing context.
Xeno, I agree, it seems the teacher was being provocative to get some reaction from the kids. Maybe they will engage and when it is time for them to vote, they will.
I also agree that there are Canadians who shouldn’t vote because they don’t have two clues and aren’t willing to learn or say I vote for this party because mommy and daddy do.
I’d rather be in a shitty country with free health care, that’s why they stay … simmmmmpleeeeee. Plus how else to undermine the man but to set up shop on his front lawn … heh heh heh
Canada is NOT the bees knees … but then again where really is …
What fucking free health care? Where do you think the majority of our tax dollars go to? To pay for health care and pay back loans we spend on health care. And if it’s free why are all those medical insurance companies out there? Free my fucking ass. v

@Ivan: I felt a great disturbance in the Force. It’s as if 1000 fangirls cried out and were suddenly silenced.
“The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter”
I think he was pointing out that most voters don’t even know what is in their best interest (long term) and just want to know, what have you done for me (not society) lately?

I would agree with this teacher, although probably for different reasons. Most Canadians with their current level of understanding of political schools of thought and how government works shouldn’t be allowed to vote. I think in order to register to vote each person should have to take a short day course to learn about policy, the levels of government, the voting process, election promises and political doublespeak. As an example I once knew a girl who voted Conservative because she liked the colour blue more than red. I don’t think that your age determines your ability to choose the leaders of your country.
can you imagine if our voter turnout was say 75%? instead of what we usually get
the secret is.. voting DOESN’T do any good. It’s supposed to.. It was designed to. But ultimately you’re given the right to choose between a giant douche or a turd sandwich or a stupid dipshit or a collection of fringe wackos who, given an ounce of power, would become giant douches or turd sandwiches or stupid dipshits.
Think (no. Really think) Strip away all the pretty adjectives and social issues and what are you left with? A demand for your money. They all word it differently and, eventually, spend it differently but the fact remains. They just want your money.
Should you vote? Sure you should. Having a pretend choice is better than having no choice. But you need to be aware that the choice is an illusion. Ask the average hardworking poor if his circumstances have changed regardless of who is in power. I guarantee his answer will be no.
I listen to these (no offense..) unobservant people argue amongst themselves as to the “bad” candidates and parties and the “good” candidates and parties. None of them are really reading. None of them are really listening. Because if they did, they would realize that no matter who’s in power, the system is perpetuated pretty much consistently. Small changes take place but these are a panacea to blind people to the reality that the big changes promised are never delivered. Nor will they be. Think of a politician’s campaign like a first date. You’re going to see the best behaviour out of someone trying to impress you.
A lot of people won’t want to hear this. They’ll flat-out refuse to acknowledge this reality because most people strongly identify with the party they support and don’t like to hear that, at the end of the day, they’re ALL crooks. They’re politicians. What do you expect??
I think your teacher might be a dillhole. But it’s also possible that he’s trying to impart wisdom in riddle.
What would happen if NOBODY voted? As in 0% voter turnout for the next federal election? I don’t know much about the mechanics of voting anomalies so I really don’t know. Would the old leader resume his duties? Would the government hold a tiebreaker vote (because if you have a 0% voter turnout that is technically a tie across all parties, isn’t it.) I’m guessing the latter but dude, burrr.. imagine just how weird and creeped out those reptiles would feel knowing no one gave a shit anymore.
I’m not suggesting we actually DO this. I’m just saying it’s interesting discussion-meat.
Are the majority of people misinformed or uneducated politically? No question. Is the solution to simply deny them their right to vote? Absofuckinglutelyfuckingnot.
Maybe if schools, parents, and our school system gave a shit about actually producing productive citizens we wouldn’t have this problem. That would be a real solution, not consciously (yes, consciously) dumbing down our populous and then taking away their rights because they’ve fallen into their own government’s trap. You don’t think it’s in the best interest of those in power to maintain a low voter turnout? You don’t think corporations, who have said government on their payroll, do everything in their power to discourage critical thinking and encourage apathy?
Yeah, let’s just decide who can and can’t vote. That would fix things.
Your teacher is a fucking waste of our tax dollars. She should teach her own views on her own time.
I’ll take the uneducated will of the people over the educated will of the elite any day.
Anyone that thinks they can outsmart the wisdom of democracy has their head up their arse, imo.
A “PEDAGOGICAL MOMENT”
Reviewing the comments on this thread in response to the high school teacher’s statement that, “Most Canadians should not be allowed to vote,” it seems that everyone except one missed the point. The usual comments, predictably, ranged from being outrightly anti-intellectual tirades
to politically right-wing denials of the universal right to vote ranging from ignorance of the political system/parties to the demand for obligatory public service of one sort or another. This would be nice but in a democracy, voting is a basic right. In fact it’s DEFINITIVE of democracy. Churchill once remarked to the effect that democracy may be a sorry thing but no one has has thought of anything better.
But I think one response (smile&wave, Nov. 28, 1:45PM) was right on target with his, “I would like to hear he’s (sic) basic logic behind the statement.” It was, in other words, a “pedagogical moment” with the difference that “smile&wave” was the now the teacher and not the “teacher” himself. Too bad “smile&wave” wasn’t in the classroom.
It doesn’t take much to anticipate the “teacher’s” response to the demand to hear the “logic behind the statement” since, in effect, there was no logic. His response, in fact, would have been remarkably similar to most of the comments on this thread from those who share his anti-democratic views. But I’m sure this would have presented no obstacle to smile&wave’s pressing the issue, driving the “teacher” back on his fundamentally anti-democratic premises.
Bravo smile&wave!
A pleasure as always.
