The moment you step into the vet’s office, a secret clock tick, tick, ticks…delving into your pockets for blood. “It’s $100, no $1000, pardon me. Pay up.”
I brought my dog to the vet’s office. Apparently, his cough might be related to his colon; his bad breath might be related to his feet, maybe gout. They stand at you, tell you of all these most necessary tests, and while you’re at it, see our fancy poop bags, and super extra food that’ll have them dancing by noon. I couldn’t afford all the tests, so asked if all were really necessary, and I get a stare that I’m sure is meant to make me so guilty that I sell my body to pay what probably costs you ten bucks. It was only through the help of a great friend who paid over a thousand bucks, and then, the vet says that my little doggie is fine, just try these vitamins we have.
People make fun of lawyers, and they got it all wrong. It’s the vets that charge you your first born, and my my, that’s a nice set of fingers you have.
My friend also brought her cat in. It was in distress, very old and needed to be put to sleep. She asked if she could make payments over two months, as she was completely broke and poor. The vet’s office refused her! (It was about $100.) She had to leave again with the suffering animal.
Fuck you, you so called animal doctors. You should be ashamed of how you suck all the blood money you can get out of people. Yeah, fuck you. I hear all the time about how vets went into the profession out of a love for animals. Where is the love to refuse to put a suffering animal down? Was she supposed to throw the cat in the harbour? Put aside your greedy pockets and remember your oath to help animals. Allow payments. Don’t entice customers with your new age food. I could care less that your poop bags have flowers on them. Start looking at your patients as worthwhile creatures that deserve your expertise. Stop looking at your patients and seeing the new deck on your house. You all truly disgust me. —Just Want to Take Care of My Pets

There are good vets out there, I’m sorry you haven’t found any 🙁
yep we tried a couple and found one we like close to the house
I disagree with this bitch, for the most part.
What I think it awful is letting animals suffer. That part of your bitch was really sad to read about 🙁
I’ve recently experienced this myself. I had to pay just under 2000 bucks, when my cat couldn’t stop vomiting. They tested him for everything going, sold me bottles of pills that are still unopened in my cupboard, soon to be discarded.
They wouldn’t allow me to leave him @ emerg. unless I paid a couple hundred up front. Thank goodness he pulled through, and I’m grateful for their help.
But I had to take him to one of their sister hospitals, not my regular vet, to stay for the days, when emerg. was closed. If I took him to my reg. vet, i would have owed them more money @ emerg. for the visit. I was told I’d have to pay them @ least another $50 for not using their hosp. After 5 days or so of shuffling the poor fellow around, no treatment seemed to be the answer, in the end. I just took him home, and he was fine. Probably just ate something he shouldn’t have. Holy crap, that was expensive!
A good friend of mine found a vet in Lawrencetown, nice lady, who cares only about the animals, and is VERY reasonably priced. I don’t know if I’m allowed to mention her name, but her name starts with W, and is like a “direction”with Y on the end.
I’ve experienced good and bad vets. The bad ones make a poor situation so much worse.
I’m surprised that they turned away an animal that was suffering so much. When I had to have my poor mutt put down the vet actually asked if we were paying now or later, I was shocked. She’s in Tantallon and I like her so much I stayed with her despite living in Halifax.
From what I hear both of the Tantallon vet hospitals/ clinics are great- if anyone’s looking.
get out of HRM to find a decent vet. in an industry that is not standardized, like veterinary medicine, they can basically charge whatever the fuck they want, and they will. go to a country vet.
A few years ago I got wrangled into taking this old sick cat off someone’s hands. I called every city vet and said I’ve got a dying cat here, can you put it down for me? Most “required” an exam ($85-$250) to ensure the animal was euthanizable, and if not, the cat would have to take whatever ‘treatments’ the vet recommended. Then the actual euthanasia fee was anywhere from $150 to $500, depending on the vet. I said fuck this, called the country vet, $60 no questions asked. Worth the hour drive. A sick old cat is a sick old cat. City vets are greedy con-artists.
It’s sad my old kitty has been getting thinner and has taken to spitting up almost every day and with two little kids and one source of income I can’t even think of taking to poor bugger to the vet because they will bend me over 6 ways to Sunday and likely can’t do anything to help anyway. At least he doesn’t seem to be suffering 🙁
What do you have against veterans?
VETERANSAREHEROES!!!
Wp
but without any vets, then you would have to take care of the animal yourself.and as a one time breeder of poodles and poms, it can get real fucking dicy, when it comes to doing tails and shit. also, who would prescribe what medicine your friend needed, you? then you might just as well put a gun to the animal’s head and pull trigger. vets have to take almost the same courses as a regular doctor does, and they are not cheap. thank your lucky stars, that we do have them, not bitch about your poor little kitten’s sniffles, or runny nose, it’s common to cats.
As much as I feel for you OP, I hate generalizations. There are good and bad in any profession. As the suckster mentioned, vets have to take a number of courses to get their licence and I’m sure it isn’t cheap, medical equipment isn’t cheap, pharmaceuticals aren’t cheap. There’s a fair bit of overhead and investment involved in starting a veterinary clinic. So keep that in mind when complaining about the cost.
Again, I’m sorry about your friend’s experience with her cat. That’s really poor handling of that kind of situation. My own experience with vets has been good. Yes, they are expensive but like any doctor they have to proscribe tests to determine the cause of the problem and the remedy to follow. I know the “guilt” part, I feel a bit like a heel when I ask how much this all is going to cost but if it is beyond your means, you have to think of what the cheaper alternatives might be.
Vets are like any doctor, if they see a problem with the pet, they will go with the best and most comprehensive course of action. That will probably translate into the more expensive treatment. It’s not always a money grab.
I’m sorry to hear this. For your friend with the poor old cat, I recommend she call the Humane Society and see if they’ll put the cat down.
We have a really good vet here in the city. I guess I can’t name the clinic, but it’s located at the corner of Robie and North…
We’ve seen all three vets there, and they’ve never suggested anything but the bare minimum for our dog. In fact, a few times they’ve told us to go buy a cheap human product at the drugstore, rather than shelling out for the expensive veterinary equivalent.
I would highly recommend them.
i think since there’s only one vet clinic at that corner, we know who you mean. i’ve heard good things about them
