Almost witnessed a death on Barrington the other day, not by a rogue lightning strike or a horde of vicious vermin that run rampant downtown, but by careless acceleration of your imported automobile. If that young women wasn’t paying attention while stepping out onto the crosswalk, or didn’t hear you push that engine to speeds of 70-80km/h through what we know to be one of, if not the busiest street in Halifax, she would’ve most definitely been killed or seriously injured.

Luckily for you the authorities had their back turned to your little stunt like many others, and furthermore to an issue that needs to be addressed. After witnessing what happens to a community after losing a youth to reckless driving early last summer, I know that more has to be done by the HRP and the RCMP than just setting up a couple more check points every month, because even after a horrific accident occurs due to this nonsense, people just don’t learn. And I know it’s as much the driver’s responsibility to drive safe as it is the job of the police to ensure tragedies like this don’t happen again, but if nothing is done then incidents like this will be bound to repeat themselves until something changes. —Stricter laws

  1. So even if the law was stricter, in the case you cited there still would be no other outcome. Yes, something needs to change but stricter laws won’t do much good. And the amount of human resources required to keep people from racing (alone) means a whole shitload of money we don’t have. Fail.

  2. Here’s the thing – you’ll never rid this city of reckless drivers with lead feet – it’s up to pedestrians to take heed of their surroundings, not eye-fucking some stupid app on their smartphone. I encounter jackass speeders all the time when I’m doing my daily walk near Hillbilly Hollow. None of them give a sweet honk for my safety or anyone else walking this road (there’s a lot of inbreeding out here). As a matter of fact, they’d probably score two points if they hit me. So I have my full attention on the road and what’s on it. But to expect these drivers to change? Not a fucking chance.

  3. an unmanned photoradar camera could have caught the speeder and fined him. It’s amazing how many asshats will slow down when they realize that they could receive a speeding ticket in the mail.

  4. More proof there is no such thing as a car-pedestrian accident that can’t be prevented…by the pedestrian.

    The opposite is not true…

  5. We need to get away from seeing automobiles as status symbols and toys. Unnecessarily large and overpowered vehicles waste non-renewable resources, cause unnecessary pollution and contribute to global warming, and their drivers endanger pedestrians and other drivers’ lives.

  6. The police need to do more, government needs to do more…EVERYONE needs to do more…except you don’t seem to be specific about what more they should do.

Look…we live in a world where sometimes shit happens. It’s just that simple. Should the driver of the car you claim performed this stunt on Barrington be punished for doing it? In theory yes…except the police didn’t see him do it…nobody actually got hurt and now it’s over.

There will ALWAYS BE irresponsible people…always a pack of stupids…especially in the city (any city). People live in a fantasy dream world – I know many of them and believe me there would be nothing more satisfying than hauling off and giving them a swift bat side the head…but the fact of the matter is, the police can’t be everywhere at once. There’s nothing the government can do other than raise fines which we all know does absolutely nothing in the face of stupid people, and we simply can’t create a society where every step every human being takes is monitored for violation.

    So…just take a breath…and get over it.

  7. I agree with this bitch. All we need are traffic camera’s at the problem intersection that can send tickets for violations in the mail. Easy low-cost fix when compared to paying the police to babysit the shit drivers of this city.

  8. For some reason I never see, BMW’s, Audi’s Infiniti’s Mercedes or other expensive cars pulled over, Can’t be pissing off that come from away money, When I had my Infiniti, never had a cop follow me, never got pulled over, Now that I have an 7 year old Jeep crossover, I’ve been followed three times, and pulled over, I drive the Jeep slower because its not a sports car…. No its not loud or modified, It’s just a lower-middle class style car and an easy target, Just an observation…
