The title is a quote from the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act. So, I recently moved to North Street and I find myself  in awe of how many drivers just mow through the crosswalk across North connecting Maynard and Fuller Terrace. To get to work, I must deal with this piece of pavemented hell every afternoon. It seems like every day I am waiting between three to five minutes for someone to do the legal thing and give me right of way. A red light at Agricola often happens first before I can get on with my day. You are legally responsible to stop in a marked crosswalk. Did you know that? Yeah, I watch you as you drive towards the bridge and hardly any of you trolls even give a glance of your surroundings as you pass me by. I’ve got a notepad ready for tomorrow for your license plate numbers. Consider yourself warned. —Lady Giving You a Sarcastic Thumbs Up With 311 on Speed Dial

  1. Yes, but if you’re standing at the edge of the crosswalk waiting to cross they are not obligated to stop.

  2. Get a large, stuffed codpiece which will precede you onto the crosswalk. Strap it to your groin.
If anyone crashes into it, fall down onto the crosswalk screaming in simulated agony. They will learn.

  3. We were taught to point an arm to indicate that you intend to cross. I find more drivers stop right away when they see this sign of intent. Are you making yourself more visible by using this method, OP? If not, be auto-proactive.

  4. Thumbs up? Maybe they think you are the hitchhiking hootchie hooker on Crack Corner. C’mon, oldest trick on the books for prostitutes. Pretend you are hitching a ride rather than soliciting. Of course, they all think of themselves as ladies too.

  5. Wear a Hollywood style Viking helmet – metal with horns protruding out of the sides – on your walk. People will stop. They stop for Conan.

  6. Why not use the Viking helmet – metal with horns protruding out of the sides – as a codpiece?
