Funny thing, that. I’d like to come to the defence of my fellow men, but the sad truth is that there seem to be certain kinds of stupid that are exclusive to the Y-chromosome.
Hmmmm…that’s food for thought – I never have heard of a female in a stand off with the coppers. It seems to be the exclusive domain of men. Am I surprised? No way.

Out of curiosity, I fired up the trusty Google. A quick search turned up a handful of police standoffs involving women, but in every case there was also a man present. I couldn’t find a single case of a woman holding police at bay alone. Interesting…
BTW, lovinglife, I’ve seen dudes put mascara on, and they make the same face ;-P On a sober note though, far more men kill their own children than women, sadly. Can’t argue with you about the Uggs.

And for everyone’s information, I am not condoning this moron’s actions in any way. I too think he should have been tasered (at the least, if not shot) and fined back to the stone ages. Assholes like this that take up the time and resources of our law enforcement agencies, and fuck up the day of people they have inconvenienced in the process should be publicly beaten on a daily basis. What I am arguing against is the sexist attitudes spewed out every day by both men and women.
I do see your point, NW. But while the statement “only men do armed standoffs” may not be precisely accurate, I still don’t think it’s sexist.
In fact, I don’t think it’s demonstrably, obviously false. I have googled extensively (home sick today ;-), and if there has ever been an armed standoff between police and a lone woman, Google doesn’t know about it. Of course, that doesn’t prove such an event has never occured.
I agree that it’s important to decry sexism. But we need to be careful not to cross the line into mindless political correctness. As a man, I am not in the least offended by the op’s statement. I think it’s a pretty accurate observation, and therefor exempt from the charge of sexism.
If sexism against men by women was as much of a problem in society as sexism against women by men, then neither gender would have the right to complain.
I’m a feminist, and I don’t hate men, or feel that I need to be superior to them. It seems that some people feel that a desire to be equal is equivalent to a desire to be superior. Yes, there certainly are feminists out there who hate men and feel that women should rule the earth. There’s another word for them and that’s “psycho whackjobs.” You can find a certain number of them in any segment of society.
SA- I agree that we need to avoid pointless PC arguements, however, I am completely fed up with the monodirectional sexism in today’s media. There are countless commercials out there stereotyping men as being oafish and inept. Take the “could have had a V8” commercials for example. Every one has been about a man who avoided eating his vegetables and is the absconded by a woman. Same goes for the Quaker Crispy Minis commercials. They show a guy eating a bunch of junk, and then a woman smartly snacking on low calorie Crispy Minis. That’s just a couple of examples. If say Sony was to make a commercial for one of their DVRs and show a woman hooking it up, with a tagline something like “it’s just that easy”, women’s lib groups would be crying foul! Just look at that Special K commercial that was out a few years ago. The one that showed men making comments like “Do these jeans make me look fat?” and “I have my mother’s hips, I have to accept that”. That commercial was pulled after only a few airings because special interest groups were crying that it stereotyped women. So there is sexism pointed towards men, Mole Rat, it’s just more subtle and accepted. I agree with you that sexism towards women is more prevalent, but that does not mean that sexism against men should be ignored.

And it’s interesting when people make these kinds of “all feminists are nazis” type statements, because I don’t know what feminist material they’re reading, but the stuff I read is generally critical of ALL gender stereotyping.

Personally, I can’t stand 80% of the women out there which is why I now work with men. And why? After 35 years of working, I’ve learned that a large majority of office problems are created by back-stabbing, vicious cows who either have no lives or were just nasty cunts. My young niecewas forced out of her first job by a gang of venom-tongued bitches that verbally abused her day in and day out for over a year while her wimp boss did nothing. I could tell you dozens of stories like that.
When I get on my office elevator every morning, the men are usually discussing the weather or some such small talk while the women whisper away, slicing and dicing everyone in their office and tittering like 12 year olds.

I guess it’s true that there is still a lot of stereotyping of men, especially in advertising. The thing is, we don’t generally give a shit. You can lump us all together as a gender and have a laugh at our expense. It doesn’t hurt our feelings. Of course, we haven’t had to fight tooth and nail to be taken seriously like women have.
If men are responsible for standoff’s then women are responsible for all diaper-wearing, astronaut stalkers.
