Holy shit what the fuck is wrong with people here? Why are people so absolutely willing to pay such high rent? The same rent price would get me twice the space in Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto. No wonder Halifax is sprawling. No wonder people would rather buy a car and live in the suburbs. Fucking build the fuck up, Halifax, and by up I don’t mean 18 floors. Try 30-40. —cptstubing

  1. willing? uh no… forced to, perhaps.
no regulation results in raising prices.
find a place in skeezy, high crime areas if you’re planning to live alone.
why do you think so many people post ads for roommates?
it’s the only affordable way to live around here.

  2. finally, something we can agree on.
I’m willing to bet people out there are actively shacking up and ‘settling’, just so they can afford a place to live.

  3. were aiming for the highest cost of living in north america! i think its a worthy goal NS has to be top in something

  4. Rent may be high but I don’t think more bug infested high-rises are the solution to the problem.

  5. If you can’t make rent, you are obviously a loser that never took their education or career seriuosly. Enough said.

  6. Rent’s cheap in Mount Uniacke! Of course then you actually have to live there. That’s the one downside.

  7. they pay because they are forced to pay. if you wanna live in a crappy area, then you pay for that. i live in a 3 story building, in one of the better, quieter parts of fairview, and pay only 260 bucks a month, for a 2 bedroom apt. water, heat, laundry, and appliances are included. the own is a swell old guy, and anything needs fixing, he is right on it. my rent has only gone up once in the 8 years that i have been here.
the apts. are pretty decent size, and you have security doors that are locked on each floor. you have to buzz to get in, and then the renter walks to let them in, if you don’t wanna buzz them in.

  8. Rents are becoming absolutely unreasonable. But I don’t think high rises are the answer – it’s not that there are no apartments available, it’s just that we have no rent control! Of course landlords are going to charge whatever they effing want.

  9. Bulldoze city housing move the inmates to Shannon Park and build some mega high rise skyscrapers shaped like the middle digit to show the view from the hill crowd your utmost respect.

  10. I moved here last year from Vancouver to attend grad school. Vancouver has the most insane rents in the country. Anytime you go to look at an apartment, there’s 10-12 other people milling about, waiting to see the place. A (shitty) bachelor is $750 minimum. And if you have pets, forget about it. Finding a place that takes cats took 5 months and you’re guaranteed to pay double rent since you can’t give your notice and magically find a new apartment within 4 weeks, unless you’ve got a ton of money (which I don’t).

On the other hand, rent can only go up by 4% a year in BC. And tenancy boards seem to always side in the favour of tenants.

I was pretty shocked to move to Halifax and find the rents comparable to Vancouver. I managed to find a decent bachelor near school that was just this side of affordable…until a few months ago, when my previous landlord told me he’d be raising my rent by $100/month. That’s a 16% increase, which is insane. No rent control in NS? Verbal agreements between tenants/landlords are meaningless? Yikes. A landlord must’ve crafted the laws here.

  11. 40 stories, Heavens to Murgatroyd, that would be higher than our church steeples…

  12. Your kidding about Toronto right??

dude, the rents in T.O are ASININE!!
if you want to pay under $900 for a 2 bdrm, your gonna be in scarbourgh or the nsty underside of Toronto, mark my words, NEITHER is fit to live in…

I was in Etobicoke, FAR WEST END, my rent was $915 for a decent sized one bedroom.. Heat/H.W/Hydro included, now I’ll give it to you, it was a Toronto Community Housing building, full of bed bugs & crackheads… but it was cheap, had decent bus service, 15 minute walk to the subway, parks, lots of restruants & close to the highway, but it was NASTY..

  13. I’m in east Dartmouth now, its ok..

my building & a few other s around here, have been cleaned out & updated recently, rents are around the $625-650 mark for a nice 1bdrm with H/HW included, about average compared to my hometown of Hamilton ont, but the downside, nasty bus service after 9pm & on weekends.. also DO NOT DO YOUR LAUNDRY HERE, its nasty expensive, I personally go down to Portland to a nice little laundrymat, called “Your Family Laundrymat” beside a Robins Donuts & a ‘pharmacy/everything else store’ its decent prices & less than 1/2 the cost it is here at my building..

  14. @ Emily Green …. isn’t the owner of that Laundrymat a sweetheart ? I often drop my laundry off there to her, because its near where some of my family live by Southdale school.

By the sound of all the bitchers comments here , & having just paid my mortgage off & I now have the bank calling me begging me to borrow more money ( they actually offered me the option of continuing to make my bi-weekly payment & they would “invest” those funds for me … (are they not just the greatest people in the world L M F A O ….) sorry couldn’t keep a straight face there !
but back to the topic, I believe what I really need is to find a little apartment building & start raking in the big bucks renting ! At 16% + a year in rent increases I’ll be rich in no time…. hell I’ll be a nice guy & only raise it 15% ~;p
I can’t believe how many people rent all their lives & never save to own their own place ! After all why would you ever want to stop paying out the nose monthly, for the rest of your life ?!? THen there are all the ‘problems’ of owning your own place …. L O L
yeah , it sure is a burden E L o L (elevated levels of laughter)
