I am a shift worker and NO I do not get to choose my shifts. I have to learn to accept what I am given and in this economy I’m thankful for a job even if it is minimum wage.

I do not make half of what the bus drivers make. As for the divorce rate BS for bus drivers what about nurses, police & emergency crews that work shift work and actually deserve a pay increase.

  1. I agree OP, you understand that you accepted a position and the terms of employment……. shift work isn’t for everyone but it should be a given for those who applied to do the job ………. as inconvenienced many people are during this work stoppage the public will have the last laugh.

  2. really though.. could you imagine the chaos if everybody got to choose their shifts? It’s just not rational.

Sometimes you get a shift you don’t like.

The karma here is that if this continues much longer, these guys will have to take call center jobs. You think you’ve got bad shifts now?? 😀

  3. Picking your shift, fuckin whiners. I’m sure the men & women overseas right now, would love to be able to pick thier shifts. But maybe it’s not as stresful as driving for MT.

  4. I also work shift work, and I also do not get to pick my shifts. Logically, if people could pick their shift, we’d all be working around the same time. So it’s just not possible.

I knew I was getting into a job that requires shift work, therefore I have no right to complain about it. Neither do bus drivers.

  5. I DON’T work shift work and I still don’t get to pick my hours!

It’s all about the nature of the job. I knew coming in that MOST days would be 8:30-4:30 monday through friday, but there will be occasional evenings or weekends as necessary.

I dunno, I can see how wanting to maintain the status quo re: scheduling would be important to the ATU — a membership never wants to take a step back in their contract but… I’m also for having a sustainable transit system — one that has enough money to keep fares where they are or lower them, one that costs the tax payer less and one that perhaps can grow in terms of scheduling and routes. It’d be awfully nice to have overnight service on weekends, or perhaps more routes to residential areas in Bedford South and Clayton Park West…. Or maybe more full time bus drivers hired to cut down on over time and to employ more HRM folks on a full time basis.

  6. I love these bitches about how ,”my job sucks more then the bus drivers job so they shouldn’t be bitching and whining.”

Good call people. Instead of trying to fix your job, you want everyone to have a really shitty job. How does that make sense?
