Dear fellow drivers, I am one of you. However, I work downtown and do use the sidewalks on a regular basis. Please let me remind you of the rule about being able to turn right on a red light: You MUST YIELD to pedestrians and no matter what, you still need to STOP because it is a red light. Wait until the intersection is clear of both cars and pedestrians, then, and ONLY then, are you allowed to make your right turn on a red light.
3 times this week (twice in the same intersection at the same time) I have been bumped by cars turning right as I attempt to cross the crosswalk on the white “walking man” sign. Do not roll your eyes at me when I glare at you and remind you in my loudest voice to YIELD to pedestrians—this is the law, OBEY it.
Oh, and to the two separate drivers who nearly hit me, an old lady, and a father with his 4 year old on his shoulders on Quinpool/Oxford on Friday, I REALLY hope you read this. Getting hit twice in one intersection within one minute is never fun… —Right to Yield

This is a pet peeve of mine as a driver. The rule is you must stop at a red light, even if you are making a right turn. Pretty simple…
You knew the child was 4? Fuck, you are good!
Bogus post. Nobody can be so stupid to be hit twice in one intersection within one minute.
If by any chance it is true you have to be one of the dumbest MoFo’s I’ve ever heard off. Maybe you should remember the old rhyme from preschool.
Look in all directions before you cross the street; Use your eyes and ears before you use your feet
I find it hard to believe you are a driver OP… If you’re a driver you would know you should always make eye contact with drivers before stepping out onto the street even though you have the right of way. I’ve done it as a pedestrian and as a driver and have yet to be hit or hit anyone else. I’ve managed to dodge many tools and my body is in tact.
This is slightly off topic but related, so I thought I would ask….if you are travelling north on Barrington, and take the on-ramp to go over the MacDonald, Dartmouth bound, what is the rule if/when you encounter the red light at the end of the ramp? I’ve played it both ways…come to a complete stop, looked and turned right when safe to do so (which is what the majority of people I’ve observed do) and, as of yet, have never been warned/pulled over to be told of the contrary. I’ve also come to a complete stop and waited for the light to turn green before turning right. (Got bitched out by some douchebag -fucktard cabbie for my trouble, but I just ignored the dick!) Which is legally correct? I know legally, unless otherwise posted, you can make a right turn on a red when safe to do so, however, my thinking is, when you are at the end of the ramp to the MacDonald, you have no choice BUT to go right, so why have a traffic signal there at all unless you are supposed to wait for the green? Otherwise, if you ARE permitted to turn right on a red here, wouldn’t a stop sign prove just as affective? I is curious…..Discuss.
The point isn’t about looking (which I DO look) it’s about the fact that drivers seem to think that they don’t need to look for pedestrians at all. They do, they need to stop, we have right of way. Whether I make eye contact with you or not isn’t the point here – I’m sick of people not bothering to look or follow the laws with crosswalks.
Perhaps they knew the child was 4 because they had a conversation while waiting for the crossing light?
i don’t take the bridge, can’t help you…ossifer bombay, emergency, come right away
Avast0, if the light is red, stop no matter the situation. If nothing is coming down North or is far enough away, you may proceed to turn right. You can turn right on red as long as it is safe. Also, pay attention to what lanes are open as you are entering the bridge.

haha, nice one. i need to use that disclaimer. yoda bat is here, i love that face
I love the fact that we are still discovering new species in jungly parts of the planet. Like this guy they found in Laos about 15 years ago:

And don’t even get me going on the ocean deeps.Where have you gone Jacques Cousteau, a generation of wannbe marine biologists turn their lonely eyes to you.

but o.p., there are no good drivers left in halisux. just soso and the rest.
As a matter of self-preservation I’d advise keeping a closer eye on drivers. What with changing CDs or radio stations, using cell phones to talk/text, hurrying home to catch the end of Jerry Springer or take burning cookies out of the oven, chewing gum and using brakes, gas pedal and steering wheel near simultaneously, drivers have enough distractions without having to also watch for pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks.
However, I do share your feelings with regard to homicidal drivers and their habits.
arrive alive bitches^^i can still here his voice admiral http://sanpedrosun.net/old/art/2008-45-18d…
“The point isn’t about looking (which I DO look) it’s about the fact that drivers seem to think that they don’t need to look for pedestrians at all. They do, they need to stop, we have right of way.”
you have the right of way but they have physics on their side.
when people think they’re invincible… they start getting lazy and letting all those lessons learned fall by the wayside.
Troodon aka yodabat…thank you for your response but is that LEGALLY what you’re supposed to do or just what everyone else does? Like I said, I’ve played it both ways and have not been told different either way.
I travel this route almost daily and have been driving for over 22 years so, I can negotiate the whole stop-then-proceed-when-safe thing with no difficulty. Similarly, I ALWAYS stay in my lane, unlike so many other brainless fuck-buckets out there.
Ban right hand turns on red lights. It’s banned in quebec and while drivers are crazy as FUCK the no right hand turn law seems to be working out just fine.
One of my earliest memories of Quebec City is taking a school trip and having the bus driver tell us, before opening the doors, to be extra vigilent when navigating the streets as pedestrians do NOT have the right away unless it is a signaled stop. If you are planning to cross at just a regular cross walk then be prepared to run lest you get an arse full of fender. lol
It’s especially lovely when you almost get creamed by a bus at a cross walk.
Crosswalks mean NOTHING in quebec. As long as there’s no cars coming, it’s pretty much anyone’s game as far as crossing the road is concerned.
And traffic lights are only mere suggestions.
actually PK the whole “no turn on red light” thing in Quebec is now only applied on Montreal island, where people really do drive like maniacs and where, from memory, a few people have been smeared between right-turning trucks and buildings. It’s now legal in the rest of the province tho there are a fair deal more “no right turn on red light” signs at major intersections than what I’ve seen in Halifax.
um troodon … whyyyy dat display picture … 🙁
Quebec is a gang of vile separatists and they can keep their fascist traffic laws in their neck of the igloo.
Haha…..bumped by cars. Did you even look to see if a car was turning, or do you just walk right out with your tunnel vision focused directly at the opposite side of the street?
it’s a yoda bat donkaloo. my new fave
I guess they don’t really listen to the signs…

ZOMG, Maes — they got rid of that law? Holy shit, A LOT more peds are gonna get squashed. Although…. the quebecois are used to vehicle-at-high-speed dodging so it’s probably just the tourists who’ll end up on someone’s car hood.
And yeah, drivers in MTL are FUCKED UP.
Being in PQ is really like being in another country. It’s trippy — esp when you’re in quebec where no one speaks english. You know the aisle of canada branded crap at the dollarama? In quebec, it’s an aisle of quebec branded crap and no canada branded crap. They even have quebec suckers, guys!
They make fun of anglos too when they think you can’t understand them. The husband and I went into the body shop and from our “accents” they could tell we weren’t native speakers and they figured we didn’t understand what they were saying, but alas I sort of understood and the husband is fluent (in four languages, in fact — Italian, Spanish, English, French) so he understood and told them off. heehee.
yeah nothing beats telling off someone in their native language when they think you can’t understand them XD As far as the traffic situation goes, it actually seems to have made the drivers _more careful_ on average and there hasn’t been any noticeable increase in accidents except a temporary rise at first when people were getting used to it. It’s true that MTL is a whole other world when it comes to driving… probably where the inspiration for Death Race came from. Potholes bad enough to rip an axle off a semi (really good to slow them down. If you think Hali has bad potholes, you have no idea), pedestrians that cross pretty much any place and any time except on crossings when they’re supposed to and drivers that are just about as nuts. It’s basically a giant training course for NY cabbies.
I once saw someone doing going up the wrong way of a one way street, in reverse, doing about 50-60 and through a few intersections. Only in MTL. <_<
And here’s a nice sample. likely to be found within five meters of each other.
