Yeah, I bring it on myself by subscribing/liking/friending so many animal rescue sites but not seeing it won’t make it not exist. A dog dumped in a dumpster in Whitehorse after a year of systematic torture. Saskatoon SPCA just found a cat whose legs were tied together. The cats and dogs in Edmonton that had their moths taped shut to slowly starve. Cats shot with arrows, BB’s. Puppies and cats hung in trees and blow-torched. (fuck, they do that in Korea to dogs so they “taste better full of adrenalin” ) Dogs sprayed with lye, dogs kicked, bludgeoned, stabbed… even fucking RAPED.
Animals we eat or whose milk we drink, who we should treat with honour and respect and gratitude for supplying us with food, we turn over to sadists who kick them in the udders, taser and fling their babies in the air to dash their brains out. So-called religious ‘plain people’ who fill their barns with stinking cages piled 20 deep to breed and breed and breed to death small dogs for the pet stores. Because animals have no souls. You know who has no soul? The humans who do this. And they should be put out of their victims’ misery. —out of my mind with it Molly

  1. The industry for small cute animals drives me insane. Humans who need a small doting creature is abusive to animals in general (though it precipitates their species co-evolving with humans). And the abuse at the margins seems inevitable. Perhaps most especially for food animals.

  2. The whole pet industry seems to be some sort of a bizarre side show circus at times. I get the impression that there are a bunch of clowns out there breeding animals solely to make a few bucks and they don’t give a rats ass about the animals except for their retail value. If there is one area that government should be highly regulating and monitoring this is it. I know there are responsible animal breeders who know their business and how to care for animals but there are far too many hacks who don’t know their hat from their ass.

The other problem is that there are too many people who like the idea of an affectionate pet companion but don’t know how to or don’t want to take the time to care for them properly. To them I say get a life that doesn’t include pets. Do them and yourself a favour.

  3. WHAT IS THE SOUL?

“Because animals have no soul. You know who has no soul? The animals who do this.”

“soul, n. the animating or essential part of a person.” (The Concise Oxford Dictionary)

The quotation is ambiguous. The first claim that animals have no soul employs it in the traditional fashion as that distinguishing man from the animals but the second claim is metaphorical, that it is really those men who act like animals who have no soul. Which claim is to take precedence, the traditional or the metaphorical and on what grounds is the distinction to be made?

In the same way the dictionary definition is also ambiguous. On the one hand it refers to the “person” as the one who is in exclusive possession of the soul but, on the other, if the soul refers to the animating or essential part of an animal, then there is no reason not to suppose that it does not also have a soul.

So what is the distinction between humans and animals? The ability to reason in a reflective rather than simply in a means-end fashion comes to mind. Conscious self-awareness also comes to mind, the ability to stand outside of oneself, to regard oneself as from a distance. So does the ability to create art and to philosophize.

But what also distinguishes the animal from the human is the ability of the latter but not the former to consciously intend evil, to consciously inflict pain and suffering on another. One must suppose that the possession of a soul is no guarantee of benevolence. If this is the case one wonders what work, if any, the word “soul” does. Maybe we should just drop the term.

  4. Here we go again with the pointless topic on how we should treat animals. It seems every time something like this is mentioned, we humans forget that we are animals ourselves. Just like how we abuse our own kind, we abuse those of other species because we feel threatened, angry, endangered, and we threat them like food because, frankly, they are food. That being said, the examples you’ve listed are specialized cases and there are laws and practises put in place to prevent such things from happening. But the majority of us in the Western world are dog lovers, cat lovers, and animal lovers. We treat animals with respect because we see them as our neighbours, friends, and family members. We don’t treat them with respect when they become a nuisance, something as a means to gain money, or something that’s just there for our survival. If you really want people to stop abusing animals, educate your children on the joys animals can bring, research on best practices when dealing with certain kinds of animals, and let other people who see animals as something else deal with them their own way.

  5. Shitd’s post got deleted so I will reiterate that the title of the post refers to the people perpetrating these crimes not the animals like the ones depicted. The picture is misleading.
How we treat animals is the part of the essence of humanity, Gandhi understood that, so it’s far from a pointless topic Mr. Wang. Humans are animals as you pointed out but the main difference between us and the other sentient species is that we have evolved to the point where we can control our destiny more or less. Every day isn’t about sheer survival as it is for wild animals. A person’s or even a society’s attitude towards animals is closely linked to their treatment of people. It’s amazing how often people who dismembered or tortured pets as children move on to doing the same to people later in life. Countries with the worst treatment or lack of respect towards animals always have the worst human rights records.
The human attitude of entitlement and superiority in this world is dangerous because, animals aside, there are over 7 million of us. The human currency is being devalued every day. Those in power will consider the poor masses as nothing but animals to be exploited or killed, it’s part of the same mindset. So love humans and animals, all of them from your precious pet to the cockroach to the conger eel. Humanity may eventually depend on it.

  6. What makes yo think it is religious people who do it. Scammers do it and I doubt many of them are “religious”.

  7. Maybe we could put them to sleep by forcing them to read this forum!!!!

  8. I was walking along Granville St. one day. Outside the bar that was there at the time was a large circular exhaust fan cover. A crow was perched on the edge of the fan cover, picking at something, but it flew away as I got closer. Beneath the fan, on the sidewalk, I saw some twigs and straw, a few grey feathers, and some egg shells. It looked to me as though the crow had battled and chased a mother pigeon before feasting on her eggs. Even nature can be a little shocking at times!

  9. ^^^ Haha! I guess I was kind of channeling Merlin Perkins reporting for Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom from the wilds of downtown Halifax.

  10. I suspect that recent events have had a temporary chilling effect. Human nature being what it is, people don’t like to pass up an opportunity to snipe at each other. I think there have been purges in the past and the committed bitchers seem to find their way back – so it’s just a matter of time.

  11. Most of their I.P. address’ have been blocked and even if they did come back, they’d just get blocked again. Anyway, there’s no point in them bothering because if they aren’t able to voice an opinion without MOD taking it down and booting them, there’s really no point in posting in the first place. On to greener pastures.

I know my job would be a lot easier if I just didn’t allow service to members I didn’t like. I’d be at my desk all day on 9gag.

  12. ^^^ True. There does seem to be a quick trigger nowadays. I wonder how often they change moderators.

  14. While true there are more than 7 million of us…
Crispy, You’re low-balling it an awful lot.

  15. OB, were there any good recipies on your sites ?
