To whomever took all of the beautiful plump purple carrots from our Common Roots Plot: I hope you needed them more than us. That would be all that could justify the heartbreak that is felt. —Winter Harvestless

  1. I am so sorry to hear that your carrots were pilfered. Sometimes people don’t understand the care, attention and happiness that comes from growing a garden. They simply see it as opportunistic without regard for others.

    Better luck next year!

  2. *Sigh* – I’m going to try and put aside my usual right-wing cynicism for a moment because I actually like and approve of what you are trying to do and wish you all the best. And I personally despise thieves, vandals and all sundry shitbirds who get a skippy-whip out of fucking with someone else’s stuff.

But – you have learned the central lesson about swords and plowshares, that has been learned by pastoral agrarian societies since time immemorial. Unless you are prepared to secure your fields (literally and /or figuratively) you will be doing your plowing for others.
    Sorry.

  3. some people understand very well the care, love, sweat and back breaking labour that goes into a garden, and they vandalize or steal with glee because they are creepy little creeps.

  4. Never knew there were purple carrots….I just learned something new. Hope the carrots go to good use as opposed to all the pumpkins dumped all over town.

  5. Thanks Good Dog–when it comes to things like music, Elvis and humor, my personal resistance is futile;D

  6. SHARPE DRESSED THIEF

By a strange coincidence I happened to be passing by your Commons Roots Plot and noticed someone skulking around. He was noticeable because he was very sharply dressed. As you will no doubt agree, this is unusual both on the Commons itself and at that time of night.

I think if we manage to track down this sharply dressed man, then we will have the culprit.

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  7. As a fellow gardener OB I can emphasize with your feelings on this loss. So while I understand many garden for the reward of the harvest, I personally enjoy the time I spend in my garden & just seeing it grow gives me joy. If you also enjoy that aspect of gardening. At least the thief/thieves can’t take that from you . Good luck next year , I hope you get to actually harvest what you plant

  8. Heartbreak? OMG! They were carrots! CARROTS! It wasn’t your child; not a treasured gift from your long-dead Dad. They were carrots!

And purple carrots taste horrid! I bought some at Sobeys – “heirlooms” – blech!

Oh, and I’m back from “va-ca” kiddies! Tremble before me!

  9. welcome back meaty.

now to the carrots. so…..to what use were you putting those nice, chubby, swollen purple carrots anyway?

  10. I grew some blue taters this year….still have them in a basket. not a clue what to do with the odd looking buggers.

  11. The blue taters are my fave. Fry ’em up or roast ’em in some butter and rosemary, maybe chuck a bit of thyme in there too.
