Driving home tonight I saw a sign on a church that read “Remember also your creator.”
It seems pretty low to me to use Remembrance Day as a way to peddle your religion. Many people of various faiths fought and died for what we have today. Can’t they just have a day to themselves? —Godless Wonder

  1. yeah but everyone has their own ‘god and country’ fighting everyone else’s ‘god and country’ .

me, i encourage religion, esp the ones that promote rapture. go away.

  2. I thought the same thing yesterday at our church service. Yes we dedicated the service to the Veterans, had a procession of placing the poppies on a plaque etc. but I also felt enough was enough. I respect and honor the Veterans don’t get me wrong. However. I do not go to church to worship man. I go to honor and worship God. So I am really glad they didn’t dedicate the whole service to the Vets. Thanks to the Vets for sure, but church is to honor the Lord. Period. The Bible even says, He is a jealous God.

  3. My parents “created” me. They have mothers/fathers day, they don’t need Rememberance Day, too.

  4. That whole “worship” thing scares me. I don’t think I could bring myself to worship anything without feeling like a little bitch.

  5. As a child,I wanted to be a nun when I grew up.What was I thinking?I still don’t fucking now.

  6. and on the planet of the apes, they worship the bomb. it is all powerful and has a nasty temper if you fuck it around. it will blow you all away.

  7. the only thing i worship is, is the human female pussy, let’s all kneel down now and give thanks for getting any. hail pussy, full of my dick…..

  8. Everytime I think of the creator ….I get hungry for spagetti & meatballs, a nice red wine & lotsa parmesan cheese

Oh Mighty F.S.M. thank you for the grub.

  9. Hey, OB, some could argue that it’s tacky to use a holiday to peddle war and death.

I just admire the photos of my grandfather and my great uncle and tell them that I miss them.

  10. “..some could argue that it’s tacky to use a holiday to peddle war and death.”

To those people who honestly think this, (and I think/hope they are in the minority), I have this to say:
For one, it’s not a holiday. Just because school, gov’t offices and most retail outlets are closed, it doesn’t make it a holiday. It’s not a celebration and it’s not SUPPOSED to be religious or political, though there are some out there that like to think/make it so. It’s not, “Hey Bob. We’re all going up to the cottage for the Remembrance Day long weekend. You coming?” It’s an observance. A day of remembrance, mourning, respect and gratitude. It’s essentially a national memorial service for those men and women, (those who died AND those who were lucky enough to have survived) who felt it was their duty to serve their country and help defend the principles on which it was founded, (however flawed some of you may think those are).

The day does, in no way, glorify war or peddle death and destruction. (People who use this argument really burn my ass!) On the contrary, it serves to remind us all of the absolutely devastating toll war takes on people, serving and non-serving alike. Families, friends, communities, provinces and the country as a whole all feel the incredible sacrifice and pain that war brings. The day is meant to reflect on that sacrifice and pain in hopes that it may never happen again. It’s a day to teach our youth, the future Canada, that war should be avoided if at all possible and for the hope that they (youth) will never know what war is. Hopefully someday, they will be able to resolve future conflicts peacefully and without bloodshed. In a perfect world, there would be no such thing as war, but us humans, being far from perfect, unfortunately it rears it’s ugly head more than it should/we’d like. Sometimes, as in the Great War and WW2, it’s unavoidable.

I’m sure there are some people who see the parades on Remembrance day, the actively serving and the veterans marching in regimental formation, in full uniform with medals shining and think that it is somehow a glorification of war. That the marching bands and the pomp and circumstance is all in celebration of us “winning” the war. That it’s all some sort of over-the-top recruitment drive and the whole reason they’re doing it is so they can “show off” and get cheered on. That’s just not the case. The military has many deep rooted traditions. Marching in formation is one. The Remembrance ceremony itself is steeped in military customs and traditions and is their way of paying respect and gratitude to their comrades that went before them.

No rational thinking person wants war. And I think if you were to ask any service member, past or present, I could tell you with a comfortable degree of certainty that not one of them would tell you the reason they joined the military was for a chance to go to war or to gain glory and honour. The vets of the Great War and WW 2 did it in a time of great crisis. Although a fledgling country, Canada was still very much tied to Britain and, as such, were obligated to help her out. Their country needed them and they answered the call. (And aren’t we lucky they did?) They didn’t do it because they WANTED to go to war. They did it because they felt it was their duty. With the exception of one instance in the latter months of the Great War, each and every one of them volunteered. No one forced them to go to war. No one forced them to leave their loved ones behind and each one knew that there was a good chance that they may not return home.

That still holds true today. Aside from secondary reasons of it being a good career and a chance to learn some valuable skills, people join the service today out of a common underlying sense of duty and a willingness to serve their country. (And I’m not suggesting that they are better than anybody else because of this. Everyone serves their country in their own way. This is just how they choose to do it.) Each soldier/sailor/airman-woman signs the dotted line of their own volition, knowing full well that they could be called upon at any moment to be put in harm’s way in defence of their country. This is made abundantly clear.
Although not perfect, they love their country and they felt/feel that the freedoms and rights that we enjoy, (and sometimes take for granted), everyday are a damn sight better than the alternatives and are worth protecting and defending.
“Using a holiday to peddle war and death”
The mere fact that people can say things like this in an open and public forum without fear of persecution, imprisonment, bodily harm or death should be enough proof of that.

  11. And I should mention that I’m not ‘attacking’ or trying to single you out, biscuit. I’m just responding to the potential argument you put in your post.

  12. this will be my first year for christmas bitches. it gets ‘exciting’ does it?

and hey, got my copy of ‘going to war’ – we will both be reading it

  13. It’s the same as the rest of the year…..People bitching about stupid shit and the regular commentators making stupid comments while they jerk each other off with sandpaper. I hate all of you so much that it makes me stick around just so I can have those rare moments where I make one of you feel extremely stupid and/or angry.

  14. No worries, avast! I wasn’t stating it personally but I’ve read and heard people say it. When it comes to Remembrance Day I just kind of do my own thing and remember in my own way. Kinda like the way I see my own sense of faith.

  15. uh oh. PG, you hate chocolate/orange??? the most delectable and tantalizing combination of exquisite tastes? i was going to make you a 6 layer orange cake with grand marnier ganache filling and sweet orange buttercream frosting. darn. will have to eat it myself.

  16. i gave you a ‘like, zilla. hey! i had a friend up north named zilla who had a house full of black persian cats. that you zilla???? still collect lavender rose china?
    chortle chortle

  17. you mean…chocolate AND all that are no-no? or chocolate and all that are OK?
i pick out all the fruit cream filled chocolates from the box and throw away the others.
sometimes i give them a wee bite to see what the filling is, then put it back together and smoosh the chocolate to cover up the teeth marks. fair warning, y’know, if anyone is of a mind to share a box of chocolates with me.

  18. Chocolate and lemon or lime? Sounds like a winning combo. Strangely enough, I don’t care for chocolate and cherry.
Slathering peanut butter over chunks of banana is another of my favourites. A common weekday breakfast for moi! Lots of energy there.

  19. I have absolutely no clue about those details, Ivan of the Yucatan. All I do know is that grand-dad served in the Korean Conflict and great uncle fought in France and Germany during WW2. Dad still even speaks about uncle showing him a genuine Nazi flag that was brought home as a ‘souvenir’ of the war. Apparently uncle also took a shot in the back or took shrapnel in the back while rescuing a trapped or fallen comrade.

I was maybe 10 when uncle passed away so I never got to hear any of the stories of the war or the service. Grand dad passed away not too long before I was born but we do have a gorgeous photo of him in his military uniform to remember him.

  20. chocolate and very intense lime.. raspberry coulis on chocolate truffle cake.
freeze ahead good in summer. coat banana chunks with peanut butter, roll in granola, wrap in waxed paper then freeze. mucky to make

  21. I’m with both Painy and Troon. Chocolate just shouldn’t be paired with some things. Orange and cherry are 2 of them. Blech! I’m curious to try chocolate covered bacon.

Thanks for the BZ Tim and the toast, Ivan.

Thanks to Biscuit too. I kind of figured that you weren’t stating it personally. Remembering in your own way is what it’s all about. My sincere thanks to your Grandad and Uncle.

Zilla – Best. gif. ever! LMAO!

  22. Yallz nuts, chocolate oranges are AMAZING. GIVE ME THEM. Lemme guess, you don’t like Cream Eggs either? *scoff*

  23. Has anyone tried a mint cream egg?I like the taste of mint but,a green coloured cream filled cream egg, doesn’t appeal to me.

  24. Thanks Biscuit. If you ever find out, please let me know. I like to collect stuff like that, even if it’s only kept in my own steadily deteriorating mind. Again, I’ll add my voice to what Vastie said, first and better. Thank you, for them.

  25. good dog, anything with chocolate except orange. when i was a pastry chef my fave was raspberry or lemon with chocolate. i do not like cream eggs and ham, mel

  26. Ham??! HAM??! What’s your beef (snicker) with ham?? I mean, it’s practically bacon. What’s not to like??
