The amount of pedestrians that have been hit by vehicles in the recent past is alarming. I walk everywhere in Halifax and have had a few close calls. I often see drivers who are not paying attention. However, I think pedestrians of Halifax need a little reminder of a poem most of us learned in elementary school. “Stop, look, and listen before you cross the street. Use your eyes, use your ears, and then use your feet.” It is awful that people were hurt crossing the road but we need to remember that you should not just walk out on the street even if you have the right of way. Make eye contact with the driver and know they are coming to a stop before you walk out in front of a giant powerful machine that can seriously injure you. As winter brings cold snowy and icy weather, it becomes even harder for cars to stop. Pedestrians of Halifax, pay attention and make the right choice to protect yourself! You may have the right of way but it won’t do you any good when you’re recovering from bruises or broken bones or worse, dead. —Check yourself before you wreck yourself

  1. OB, if you are not up to the challenge of safely dealing with pedestrians that do not look ( there will always be someone that doesn’t look) then i suggest that you throw away your keys and take the bus.

  2. They call them Darwin awards & perhaps if a few were posthumously awarded here in the HRM. A few of those who really deserve one might take notice & stop & look that 1 time that saves their life.
Personally I’m not the least bit concerned 1 way or the other about someone who wants to kill themselves .
& if some of the examples I seen crossing streets in Dartmouth on Friday ,texting away oblivious as they cross the road , running with head phones on through red lights (you know the flashing red hand) without stopping checking & freaking out when a car traveling on a green almost hits them. Improve the gene pool with a few dozen less , as opposed to a few dozen injured.

  3. It’s funny because they don’t really teach that in school anymore. They teach you to depend on a crossing guard to be standing in the street as you run and scream willy-nilly into traffic that’s been stopped for you.

  4. “You may have the right of way but it won’t do you any good when you’re recovering from bruises or broken bones or worse, dead. “

I love how motorists justify their bad behaviours and law-breaking!

  5. You guys do whatever you want too. I stare down cars and wave my arms maniacally indicating my desire to cross, for the vehicle (whose driver I am staring in the eyes) to speed up through the crosswalk, stop at the far end, then stop and shrug at me non-apologetically while mouthing in a very exaggerated way “Sorry!”. Motorists need to stop at stop lines if they’re stopping, if they’re not we’ll keep out of the way but stop fucking antagonizing us for being poor fuckers who are walking and will never afford a car!
