I read the poster for the “Paws Here on Quinpool” campaign in disbelief: this is a terrible idea. It’s bad enough to have untrained, unsocialized dogs jostling or slobbering you or crapping on the sidewalk—now we are expected to put up with this in our local businesses too? Dogs are dirty. They are all too apt to “mark their territory.” They are animals with teeth and claws, and can be frighteningly territorial. (This is why I no longer go to Point Pleasant Park, which has degenerated into an anarchic dog park.) I find most owners can’t or won’t control their dogs. Some people are terrified of dogs, and even if you think this is laughable or irrational, such people’s feelings should still be respected. Dogs do not respect people’s personal space. Dogs trigger people’s allergies and possibly life-threatening asthma attacks.  Where sanitation is concerned, whether hardware store or bank or café, it’s all the same: animals DO NOT belong in our local businesses. —I just want to shop in peace

  1. So don’t shop on Quinpool; there’s not that much there anyway so you probably won’t miss anything.

  2. Oh, big woof. Like Charlie said, don’t shop on Quinpool. The world can’t revolve around your fear of canines.

  3. This could be hit or miss. On the one hand it will make many dog owners happy but on the other it usually is not beneficial for a business to drive other customers away. Probably the deciding factor for each business will be if sales go up or down and feedback from customers and former customers etc. All may be fine until someone gets bitten or there is a dogfight in a store. Then, let the lawyer games begin.

  4. Hear! Hear! My sentiments exactly. I stopped going to Point Pleasant for the same reason. having dogs off leash would be okay if all owners took the time to train their dogs but it seems that few do. Last time I was in PPP a large dog ran in the pond and then, soaking wet ran over and jumped up on me. The idiotic owner seemed to think it was amusing.

I can’t help but think that this is all part of a general trend towards selfishness and lack of respect for boundaries.

  5. So we’re allowed to let our dogs out on Quinpool? What time do we have to pick them up by?

  6. You know what? It’s been this way for months now, and I haven’t heard of one single problem except for knobs like you whinging and moaning about your own stupid personal problem with the new policy. Don’t like it, don’t shop there and order your shit on the internet. You have a far better chance of dragging home bedbugs from shopping than getting bitten by a dog.

This city is way behind when it comes to infrastructure for dog owners. This city bends over backwards for parents, in the way of recreation centres and 4 pad arenas, etc… but not one single dogs only parks. I’m sick of my tax dollars going to “family” crap, with me being demonized for being a no kid having dog owner. Quinpool Rd businesses are ahead of the curve when it comes to accommodation of pet owners, and I hope it doesn’t stop with them.

Don’t like dogs? Build yourself a big hamster ball to keep everything and everyone away from your delicate ass

  7. If the business is not serving food I see no problem. If a business allows dogs and you have a problem with that; you can let the owner know how you feel and that you will not frequent their business because of it. I feel as if people like you would be in the minority. As a responsible dog owner I think it is a great thing that the businesses on the street as a whole have adopted this policy.
