So I’m driving through a town (in this province) and see a sign for “fresh fish/fresh lobster.” Since it was on my grocery list I stop and buy both haddock and lobster. When I get home my husband asks me how much I’ve paid and for how much, I tell him, we weigh it and then melt off the water…what a rip off! I stopped to buy from you guys because I wanted to “buy local.” Thanks for making me distrust ALL fishermen! —MadBelle
This article appears in Jul 4-10, 2013.

I’m sorry you stumbled on a dishonest fish monger. I personally use the guy in Bayer’s Lake; he’s awesome!
While we’re on the subject of overcharging, there’s this greedy bugger out on the Prospect Road hawking 3/4 filled boxes of strawberries for $5.00. Little wonder they had no price sign. I drove a few clicks further and was able to buy strawberries for $3.25 per at a neighbourhood market.
the road side scammers will soak scallops in fresh water too which plumps them up.
MELT OFF THE WATER?
“When I get home my husband asks me how much I’ve paid and how much (haddock and lobster I bought), I tell him, we melt off the water… what a rip off!” Madbelle
This is an incoherent post. First, what does Madbelle mean by “melting off the water?” Where was the water?
Neither haddock nor lobster come in water. What is Madbelle talking about?
Second, Madbelle does not give either the amount she actually paid or the respective prices per pound of the halibut and lobster. Therefore it is impossible for the reader to know whether her account is accurate or even truthful.
Talk about a rip off!
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
In typical Nova Scotia style, the lack of forward thinking and self-centred greed shows through in every corner of the province in every skill, trade and profession.
People here have been deprived so long that the only thing they know to resort to is scam, free handouts and immediate gratification.
Rather than see the value in building a good relationship with their customer, these fisher people would rather rip you off for every cent they can, then go crying poor to the govt handouts (i.e. – EI) as soon as the season ends so they can get a government cheque, cut and sell wood and work under the table during the “off season”.
Meanwhile, I work my ass off in a dead end, salaried position every week fo the year, get minimal vacation, can hardly afford a shitty ass car to get me too and from said dead end job while my neighbour, the fisherman gets to drive a brand new truck (which he puts dock diesel in for about half the price we pay at the pump), draws pogey for half the year he isn’t “fishing”, tops that up with occasional cash work when they want to go south during the worse of the winter months, then come back to do it all again for another year.
I am not saying there isn’t hard working fisherpeople out there, nor is there professionals in this field, but there sure is a lot of “scam the hell out of it” types who don’t give a shit about: A. the hard working people like me who fund your down time, instead of you being smart and planning your finances to accomidate such. B. The actual stock of fish (take as much as can as often as you can then cry for a handout when the stock is gone) and C. the image you are creating for the rest of the hard working fisherpeople out there.
I am sick and tired of this “I deserve everything becasue I am a poor fisherman, fishplant worker, farmer, labourer etc.” No one is forcing you to work in this industry – go get an education and or nine to five job like the rest of us smucks.
I guess inheriting a fishing boat / family business sucks, eh?
“I wanted to buy local”
Pretty sure all lobster purchased in NS is local, or at least local’ish.
Goes to show that “organic” and “local” are euphemisms for rip off.
The absolute worst rip off roadside hawker is the mare who sells homemade pies on the St. Margarets Bay Rd. I bought a German chocolate cake, if Der Fuehrer had bought it she’d be inhaling gas by now.

I know I’m going to Hell for laughing at that, Baz.
Basil, I spit out a perfectly good cup of java at my screen – guess I’ll be joining Ivan in hell’s waiting room.
I need more likes for ustwess….
Ivan and TT – take a number, I’m way ahead of you both, it’s like Apocalypse Now, I love the smell of sulphur in the morning.
Well, look at that… Basil and I agree on something!!!???!!! I stopped and bought a coconut cream pie from her for 10 bucks, and after the first bite, threw out the rest. I promised I would never put my poor mouth through that again.
The pie lady has been there for years. Why anybody would buy a pie from someone on the side of the road is beyond me.
@Bro Tim yes let’s use this one example to generalize ALL local and organic food. Right. That’s good thinkin’.
I’d much rather eat organic and local than the other pesticide-ridden crap. And yes, organic can be just as bad in certain cases. But the thing is. Is when it’s local AND organic, you know exactly what their organic practices are and if it truly IS organic or if they’re just using the label to up their market prices.
As with others, I will direct you to Penn & Teller’s BULLSHIT about the reality of “organics” and “bottled water”. It’s all a rip off.
Again, I know that organics can be worse and use some bad chemicals. As I said, if you know your actual organic farmer, you’ll know whether or not they use healthy practices. You can’t possibly think farms that spray are better than natural farms who don’t? (Also, I’m not going to trust Penn & Teller for information. I’d rather look at studies, thanks. 😛 )
And I know bottled water is complete bullshit. It’s just tap water 99.9% of the time.

There are hundreds of millions of people that eat food from “factory” farms who are just fine. If things were so devastating as the eco-nuts want us to believe, we’d all be dropping like flies.
Brotim, it’s not just the health risk with food that has been heavily sprayed with pesticides, it’s the damage that pouring these chemicals over large area’s of cropland does to the ecosystem. I don’t buy organic or go out of my way to buy local, I buy the stuff that’s on sale for the most part, cause 100 bucks doesn’t go as far as it used to at the check-out counter. But there are a lot of problems associated with these chemicals.

you’re wasting your typing hoist
PG, I don’t live life thinking that everything is going to kill me. Fuck breathing in exhaust, crossing the street, driving a car is more dangerous than food (unless you choke on it).
Have you heard the garbage Suzuki is spewing about immigrants? He thinks we should stop immigration because we don’t have room. Fuck Canada has room for 500,000,000 and enough land to feed them. But hey Suzuki and his immigrant family got in so fuck everybody else.
I’ll leave it at here after this because I fear PainGirl is correct, but…
Aside from Hoist’s points. Have you looked at the rate of illness and disease, Bro Tim? Or the rates of mental disorders, which we are starting to find have physical causes for? There are countless studies confirming that these foods addled with carcinogenic pesticides/insecticides are not healthy. Yes, exhaust is worse; that doesn’t mean the other is ‘healthy’ just because something else causes more severity. There’s nothing wrong with living as healthily as possible.
^This.
Nice post Coastingby.
I may be wasting my time PG but I think posting this would be interesting for some and would add a little perspective. A list of countries that ban the use of genetically engineered and chemically altered foods. You might be surprised at how behind-the-times we are in North America with regard to what we are willing to put in our bodies.

Why they doing this if everything is on the up and up?
Melt off ice I presume you mean OP. Too bad but I wouldn’t paint all fishermen with the same brush because of one shady character.
Interesting article Hoist, the disappearance of the honeybees would be catastrophic to the agricultural industry. Say hello to the $25.00 apple.
Son you need to learn self-reliance. You should go see Ray’s Bait Shop, i tell ye what.. this guy never went to school, he grew up in the hills. But he wrote the book on homemade bait. ‘Course it’s just a bunch of scribbles ’cause he never went to school.
I can’t wait for the mighty Walmart to complete their store renos and flood the market with cheap, toxin loaded stuff.
If you wash it down with beer you’re safe.

MONTREALMAN FOR THE CROWN IN THE CASE OF SMITH VS MADBELLE
“I have undertaken an action on behalf of the plaintiff, one John Smith, a fishmonger of this province, in an action against the defendant, one Madbelle, also of this province, on the grounds of malicious defamation. As is commonly the practice, I rest my case on precedent in tortious law, in particular that of McNichol v, Grandy, (Supreme Court of Canada. 1931 S.C.R. 696: 1DLR. 225 cited in Wright’s “Cases on the Law of Torts,” Second Edition, pp. 765 -769.)
‘Your honour, I maintain that the case of McNichol vs. Grandy as argued in the Supreme Court of Canada is on all fours with the present case of actionable defamation of my client against Madbelle. The transcript of the case reads as follows: ‘The defendant and the plaintiff met in the dispensary of the plaintiff’s drugstore. In the course of the conversation the defendant spoke in a loud and angry tone and uttered words defamatory of the plaintiff. An employee of the plaintiff, Kathleen Wilson, went to the dressing room adjoining the dispensary, and her attention was attracted by the loud tones of the defendant which could be heard through the wall. She listened carefully and overheard the entire conversation by reason of a small hole (which had been cut by firemen in a recent fire) in the wall between the two rooms. At the trial for an action for slander, the trial judge withdrew the case on the grounds that there was no evidence of publication. The Court of Appeal for Manitoba reversed this judgement and ordered a new trial. The defendant appealed.’
Your honour, there are clearly two components of malicious malicious defamation, the intrinsic nature of the defamatory comments themselves and the requirement that such comments have been published in a public forum. I maintain that Madbelle’s comments satisfy both criteria. Her “What a rip-off” satisfies the first while publication in the columns of “Bitch” – a disreputable but nonetheless public forum – satisfies the second. I rest my case.”
A pleasure as always.

Just a side note, I am not a Walmart “fan” (for various reasons unimportant to this thread), BUT they DO have a policy (in NS at least) of stocking locally sourced foods, so their new grocery section will help support local producers, which is not a bad thing…
We have an awful lot more “have nots” trying to make a living in this province doing exactly what they (and their families) have done for years (farming and fishing).
If they can’t make enough money to continue producing, they’ll stop, and have to find alternative means to make a living, and I’m sure we’ll all hear about THAT in the future.
I buy local if I can afford it, which sometimes means my grocery (or specialty) store. There ARE ways to do it without breaking the bank if you really want to.
(Like cutting your 16 oz steak portion into 4 pieces and supplementing your meals with veggies, which is healthier anyway).
But don’t you see that is the problem. One should never have to say “If I can afford it” with supposedly local product. If it is local it should be very affordable.
