Just heard that voter turnout in HRM for the municipal elections stood at a totally pathetic 37 percent. Guess what, fellow bitchers and would-be moaners? That means that 63 percent of you do not have the right to complain about the actions of our esteemed regional councillors, or lack thereof, because you failed to exercise one of your most basic and important rights. May I remind you that life is a program of action, not just talk. —Tired of Pathetic, Lazy Whiners

Also, it’s one of our most basic and important rights to be able to CHOOSE whether we vote or not. There’s nothing in there that forces us to go to the polls to elect some dip-stick we don’t agree with, to perpetuate a system that some of us think isn’t properly representative of our community.

i’m tho asthamed for us, yes i voted http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-smwiNSafpVA/TWxQ…
I’m sad that I probably won’t be getting any chickens next year….. sigh, oh well…. maybe next year Freddie
i voted, was kinda sad about the landslide of votes for savage i think that shows that even the people that did vote weren’t really informed
Captain Leebob, you are abosuletly correct that you do have a choice whether to vote or not. What the bitch is saying is STFU when it comes to complaining about the new administration. Brandon Wilcox, I was very informed and still voted for Savage. Excuse me for not picking an ex-cop or hairdresser for mayor, but I would like to think that someone with experience would better suit the job.
im not saying that as a knock on savage broc, i just find in any election that there is that big of a majority that a good percentage of the block is based on name power alone. Peoples opinions generally differ greatly so youd think with 3 main candidates itd be more 40 30 20 for them it is one of the main reasons we had minority governments for awhile
Saying someone can’t complain because they didn’t vote is an incredibly ignorant statement, BRoc.
“You didn’t throw your blind support behind one of our redundant parties, now you can’t complain because we’re running the show.” Hurr Durr, indeed!
Forcing me to support someone whose political ideals don’t match my own, just so I can have the privilege to complain about my own god damn City/Province/Country, is ludicrous. None of those running for Mayor would have represented me as a citizen, but you’re saying I have to pick one anyway or shut my mouth? Fucking stupid
Sorry, I realize that it may seem that I called you ignorant, BRoc. I meant that the statement was ignorant. My bad!
And the ‘Fucking Stupid’ was directed at the idea, again, not you.
It’s been a loooong Monday, kids.
yep, and those other 63 percent, will be the ones bitching the most. i cannot for the life of me, figure out why some people don’t want to vote? fuck me, there is call in, evote, and drop by in the flesh. people are just useless pieces of fucking lazy ass shit. but when their welfare cheques come in every month, look the fuck out for the stampede to go and shop.
hopefully, by the time the next provincial election comes around, the government will know who the lazy bastards are, and stop their cheques. i will personally endorse that move. if they can’t take a few seconds to call or visit the online site, then they should be dropped as a non citizen in this province. o.p., i’ll go a step further here, no vote, no say, and no fucking free money.
our government is illegitimate
We should all vote. Even if you spoil your ballot you have exercised a freedom some of us havent always had! Plus, with e-voting, it isnt hard! I voted while my pasta boiled for dinner.
OP, so you’re saying that to abolish complaining about the government, we simply need to have not a single vote cast?
yeah, that’ll work.
I can’t wait to see his contributors list…
I’m sure there’s a lot of handshaking he made what with all the ads everywhere…
handshaking their cocks, that is.
I was gonna vote but I couldn’t decide between a guy who sells hot dogs or that fucking cat.
Maybe people would vote if it wasn’t a circus freak sideshow or the people running had any actual qualifications.
I think most people were just glad they didn’t have to vote Kelly out. Vote or not they got a change; Wasn’t the change I wanted, but… still a change.
Do you really want out of touch welfare junkies (I mean the people who abuse the system not ones who need it) who are not even a functioning part of society to have a say in politics? I didn’t vote, I would want to be very informed if I was going to do so and I didn’t bother informing myself. This is the first time I’ve felt guilty about it though so I guess I’ll start doing my homework for next time 🙂
I used to work in a nursing home, Kelly came there to schmooze the geezers last election and was shaking hands with folks I’d had the misfortune of seeing play in heir own excrement while also serving sandwiches and cut fruit with his bare hands. Fucking gag me, I would never vote for him on that point alone.
I think people who act disenchanted with the whole system or claim that there are no qualified candidates are just plain lazy and pretentious. Really? No qualified candidates? Listen, go back to your rat infested bachelor pads in north end Halifax and toke your brains out some more. Meanwhile, back in the real world, the working class, tax paying voters will take care of business. You people are fucking lucky you live in a country which allows you to live off the system and not contribute to the “system” or society in general. The system isn’t perfect but it works well enough for most people, and to hear you leechers whine about the government is ironic, hypocritical, but most of all very tiring
Hearing your prejudiced, high and mighty rhetoric is tiring, BRoc.
I have a career, I’m involved in my community, I support local development, and I’m well informed about current politics which is why I choose when it’s appropriate to vote. I don’t just not vote. I’ll cast when there is someone deserving of my support, which is what I did in the last federal election.
Now, I’d like you to list how us readers, especially those of us who didn’t vote, are leeching off the ‘system’? How am I such a burden compared to you? Am I lazy? Fuck no! Am I pretentious? From your viewpoint, maybe, but that’s just your opinion and has little to no weight.
“The system isn’t perfect but it works well enough for most people” – Apparently it doesn’t work well enough for 63% of the population. And do you really want to live with a system that ‘works well enough’? Kinda aiming low with your aspirations, aren’t we?
kinda like switched from white to whole wheat.
i could go for some caraway rye
I don’t think you’re talking about bread… but, I got a loaf of Sweet Potato Bread from the Market on Saturday. It’s amazing! I’ve eaten almost an entire loaf to myself since Saturday morning.
no i wasn’t but i do enjoy rye bread and sweet potato bread sounds good
Captain LeeBob; many men and woman died to protect our right to vote, I feel it is very short sighted not to exercise it. You have the option on every ballot to spoil it, this allows one to exercise their right to vote and still send the message that they are not happy with the choices provided. I agree with many posters here that you have no right to complain if you did not choose to vote.
We live in a society where people are too self interested and live with their heads up their own asses.
somebody doesn’t like bread keptin, that’s funny
I agree OB. The excuse was there was no evoting in the last election. This election there was and what happen? The exact turn out as last time. Where were the eligble students? Where were those bitching for evoting?
Most importantly we had a chance for real change and what happened? They voted in the same fucking dysfunctional council, led my Mike “I’m not political” Savage. The only good news is that two big mouths Dawn “If you’re media, get the hell out” Sloane and Sue uteck are gone.
Maybe a miracle will happen but I will not hold my breath. And yes, I vote in all elections.
First I once again would love to see a grass roots movement to have a box on the bottom of every voting ballot for “NONE OF THE ABOVE” & or a write in ballot where we can vote for a friend , family or yourself ~;p
That way those who feel they have no choice & so don’t vote could show the world … W O W look at that 60% of the voters in the HRM of Nova Scotia voted for None of the Above & only 37 % voted for any of the actual candidates….That news would sweep the globe !
Second, I voted, but what the hell voting officer was with the question when I gave you my ID, Do you wish to vote for the Mayor , councilor & school board ?
No Lady I only came there to vote for the councilor ! ! !
Are you fucking kidding me ?
If I’ve taken time to go & vote, I want to participate in every ballot I am eligible to vote on …
So I ask all of you who voted . Did anyone choose to only vote for 1 of their options & not bother with the rest ?
Like I said, I vote when I feel it is appropriate. I’ll not have a politician using my vote as a cruch to prop themselves up when I don’t even want them in office. If a spoiled ballot had any political weight, I would vote more consistently. As of right now, it’s a waste of time spoiling a ballot because all it becomes is a statistic. Like More said, there should be a “None of the above” box to check, and if enough people check that it should signal no confidence in the candidates.
And what happens when a crap government is elected, there’s scandals every other day, missing money, and under the table dealings? Can I complain then? Or does that Right still only apply to the idiots who installed the corrupt government? My family members fought and died for our right of CHOICE, Mewshady. They weren’t fighting so I could one day be forced to silence because I didn’t agree politically with a small and limited handful of politicians. I can choose to vote or not, I can choose to believe politicians or think for myself, and I can choose a better way of running our country. They weren’t fighting for your right to a simple vote, they fought for our freedom to choose in all aspects of our lives.
Anyways, I’d rather talk about bread.
PG, I may be into the shop this week for a visit and some help with the ol’ ride. It appears that I’ve gone and bent the back rim, so she’s got a wobble now :S
Sigh – I can’t believe how easy they made it for voters this time around with on-line voting yet indifference to the process continues. We all watched two ex-prems flog $12m on the ‘Democracy 250’ fiasco a few years back and last provincial election in 2009, it was the lowest turnout ever.
On the other hand, to be rid of Uretch and the Crack of Dawn shows the gods have been merciful.
Cap… I get George Carlin’s rant on not voting, he said ” I don’t ever vote, that way no one can ever blame me for the fucking idiots who are screwing us over in office” WHich is definately true, you didn’t vote them in & as a citizen of this country, whether you voted or not shouldn’t take away your right to bitch & complain about the dim bloody lightbulbs scewing us over. But I gotta say, I sure wish that option for write in or none of the above would count, so one wouldn’t have to choose fresh road kill over the councilor in your voting district ! Out here in District 1, I had a choice of rotten meat or spoiled meat ! District 1 has a new councilor, but he is still an incumbant because he was a councillor in a different district before they redrew the map . Neither of them had a spine when it came time to stand up for us in the past … the concert scandal not a sound out of either of them ! Neither made a peep about Kelly being a complete F’in scumbag to the rest of the benefactors who should have inherited from the Estate he supposedly was Executor of years ago ! Same thing with the Metro Centre ticket sales loss of revenue for the HRM , which Kelly was once again directly involved & again dropped the ball on, yet stretch & dalrymple never made a fucking sound …..god damn waste of food both of them. In My Opinion, having only those 2 as candidates , that wasn’t a choice I’d pick fresh road kill or as I said somewhere else a stray cat over either one of them, they sure couldn’t do any worse & both of my choices (the cat or the road kill) would have made the same amount of complaints & been just as vocal ! Perhaps the cat might have actually meowed once or twice ! ! !
Also before you come on here telling me how many photo ops & church suppers these guy’s go to, maybe if they worked harder at getting people more informed, making everything more transparent in the first place everyone wouldn’t be so upset about all the waste & behind door bullshit that goes on… if there are that many private issues being done by our public servants, they are doing business all wrong !
I tend to vote more often in federal elections. It can get difficult to really keep track of all the politics at every micro level. MLA, Mayor, Premiere. Always good to make the one vote count. Too much can be too much to keep track of and form a good opinion on.
Just wanna remind you that your most basic right is freedom. Just wanna remind you that government sucks shit. They don’t represent the people in this city at all. Just wanna remind you that you are a brainwashed moron following the one in front and NOT voting is action. Wake up OP. The system sucks and we just said it again.
Anybody who believes any war was ever fought to uphold a political ideal like democracy is a fuckin brainwashed idiot. Plain and simple. Democracy is a system of control, like a fence, and oh here it comes, wait for it, we are the sheep. Congratulations on the near two-thirds that didn’t vote, likely out of apathy. We can do better next time. We will shoot for 85 percent then hold an intervention for the remaining 15 percent at the commons one sunny weekend. First the system has to be dismantled before it can be re-built. I am proud to be a Haligonian once again, my faith is renewed that you’re all not just a bunch of lazy whiners. I love you guys. Well, two-thirds of you anyways.
I voted just so I could vote against Savage. It did me no good. I have to say I agree with the comment about the voters weren’t very well informed.Disappointed, to say the least, disgusted is more an accurate word to describe how I feel about the outcome. Another talking head that just can’t wait for his turn at the trough. I always vote, though. At least I can have a say in who I don’t want.
“…if there are that many private issues being done by our public servants…” – Good point, More. The government should be accountable to the people, not the other way around. If the government is doing something, anything, we should know about it (within reason, so maybe not everything the military is doing). Everything at a Municipal and Provincial level should be open to the public, recorded and archived in a public database, and remain accessible to everyone.
So like how many like younger people like actually reallized there was a like an election,or cared .
Voting ,isnt that like what like the old people do ,gaaawd .
I used to train in Tae Kwon Do with Linda Mosher and her husband. I have kicked a sitting coucilmember in the head on numerous occasions. It is my single greatest accomplishment.
having worked the election there were few spoiled ballots. If you didn’t agree with any of the candidates, spoil your ballot by filling in no one or them all. If a large % are spoiled then THAT would send the message. Not showing up sends a laziness message more than anything.
Care enough to show up and give your opinion!
I agree there wasn’t much choice for mayor. The G&M predicted over a month ago that Savage would win barring a divine intervention. Given that this election was in serious need of divine intervention at the mayoral level, I guess that’s another point for the atheists/agnostics.
That said, there was a lot of choice at the district ward level, which is why I voted. And I was able to vote for someone who I believed would represent the ideals of both myself and some of my neighbors.
Kontee McZhidbolz, I like your view and opinion.
There are a lot of different opinions on the subject here.
Especially that how they differ when it comes to voting. Yes I agree it’s a right to vote and we should exercise that right.
I agree that the public wasn’t really well informed about the candidates. But I did my research. I learned a bit about the candidates. I didn’t vote. I decided not to vote due to the fact that it won’t change anything and the candidates themselves. Honestly none of them were qualified and due to Savage’s background, I highly doubt the outcome would have been different if we had 70% or higher voter turnout.
I’d be interested to know what the other non-voters would have voted though.
I watched an interview with Savage last night on CTV News and this question was asked:
“How do you intend on keeping the promises you made if you have no full say in any of it?”
Which is what reality is. The system is based on a set of councilors who meet on regular basis and discuss what they feel is important. Not us, what “they” feel is important.
So the mayor could make so many promises and a lot of people actually believe he/she can keep them knowing fully that he/she are blowing hot air simply because that’s just not the way the system works and is designed.
Regardless of who the candidates are, nothing will ever change, which I believe is the reason we had such a low turnout of voters. I feel that a lot of residents here are in the same predicament. The mayor can’t change anything. They all have to meet and agree for something to change. They could all have it out for the mayor and vote against anything he’s trying to change.
Since I didn’t vote, I couldn’t care less who won.
What I love the most is Fred. His main agenda was to allow people to keep farm animals in their backyards. That’s mainly why he wanted to become mayor. Fully knowing that the council is against it.
What boggles my mind is of all the issues in HRM, that was the main thing he was striving for! How about ways to tackle crime, considering HRM has had the highest crime per capita in all of Canada for a couple of years! How about giving downtown business a break so that it would be more affordable for us to go out and have fun and not have to worry about paying an arm and a leg for a drink or a plate of food or watching a show.
How about bringing more entertainment into the city like building a theme park or an aqua park instead of another useless convention centre. We can’t even fill the first one let alone the new one! Just better the city.
No one has done that in more than 20 years.
Honestly a Bedford-Halifax Ferry would be fantastic.
mclean, I was waiting for someone like you to comment here. Thank you for allowing me to keep the faith…lol
mclean, your an idiot. You really are dumb, when you grow up and get some life experience someone may want to listen. But for now keep posting your ramblings online because you have no friends to listen to your BS. Now about the bitch, we needed Puff Daddy in the city for the election. Vote or Die was some serious business. South Park also comes to mind, a giant douche or a turd sandwich, take your pick mclean or go to Somalia, China or maybe even Haiti. You’d fit right in, your the bitch!!!! Not the OB, lol.
“Vote or Die” sold a fuck of lot of t-shirts. It may even have gotten Dubya his second term.
Didn’t hear a lot from Ole P-Pissy about that, did we?
I just had to say it again, you suck mclean. Now I feel better, the stupidity actually got to me. “Anybody who believes any war was ever fought to uphold a political ideal like democracy is a fuckin brainwashed idiot”. Hitler’s obvious commitment to democracy comes to mind, to bad he was defeated. Europe would have been drowning in democracy if he was still alive. Think before you speak mclean, and take the cotton out of your ears and put in your mouth.
So since I didn’t vote I can’t complain about all these crappy “musicians” that are on the radio who got famous from American Idol?
agreeing with mclean!?!?!?!
holy shit, what does THAT tell you.
nutbar.
and kegg, totally agree.
I had the unfortunate displeasure of requiring the radio be on for an hours drive recently.
The only song that came on that wasn’t torture was gangnam style.
I’m furious that Adele is doing the Skyfall bond theme.
I can’t stand her whiny, idiot voice.
“I know you’re a psycho… and really craaaaaaaaaazy
so here’s my number… kill me, maybe”
I said usually I tend to vote only in federal elections. I did the Halifax mayor election this year, thought it needed everyone we’re in a tight spot..
People who refuse to vote because of apathy are the laziest, most useless fuckers who complain the most about any and everything they can. As long as there is an ear to listen to them, these wastes of space will just continue to talk and talk while doing absolutely nothing.
If ol’ Biscuit don’t like the candidates he still exercises his democratic right by at least showing up but instead of voting he’ll wipe his ass with the ballot and stick that in the vote box instead. Now that’s democracy!
