The NS government is considering an two percent hike in the HST. They are going to backfill the two percent reduction in the GST that was given to us so graciously by the federal government over the last few years. ENOUGH. People are complaining that they don’t want tax hikes or services reduced. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS TO DEAL WITH THE DEFICIT—EARN MORE OR SPEND LESS!!! zzz- Agreed. There was not much to choose from. However with the NDP we have the double edges sword of a government hiking our taxes while giving public sector unions whatever they want.

This is a repeat from 1993, when John Savage’s Liberals cleaned up a tory mess. They ended up cutting public sector wages and hiking the then-PST 1% He paid the price politically as Mr. Dexter will come next election.
If I had to actually use my poli-sci brain, I’d say look for a 1% hike (promise 2, deliver 1, it’s like adding sugar to your Buckleys), a bit of an increase in high-end income tax, and public service cuts through attrition in the 1st year. After that, it’ll be wait and see what the economy does. It does concern me that they’ve hinted at more infrastructure funding simply because the feds are pitching in. While it’s nice of Ottawa, it’s money we’re spending only because the item is on sale.
I can’t believe the province now expects us to pay for more big screen TVs, laptops, printers and electric generators.
Honestly, a 2% hike makes little to no difference in your day to day life. 2 cents to a dollar, really? I mean, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the fed’s reduction on the GST was shortsighted, and was only a political favour to make it seem like they were getting rid of the GST.
That said, I’d rather take a hit at point of sale, than either out of my pay or at tax time. It’s also probably the best for the average family overall as well.

It always makes me chuckle when i see places like Ontario with lower tax rates and when family in Toronto tell me about campaigns up there that try to get people to move to or back to NS. Apparently they use the line that there are plenty of jobs…yeah, plenty of jobs if you want to be a “sandwich artist.” *eyeroll*
