If you only feel comfortable driving 10 under the speed limit, maybe you shouldn’t be driving. I’m not asking for people to speed. Just go the freakin speed limit, at least.

When I was in YD, they pointed out that the speed limit is just that- the upper limit, and that you’re not required to drive at exactly that speed. I recognize that going exceptionally slowly can be dangerous too, but 40 in a 50 zone? Relax, speed freaks.
drive for the conditions. The speed limits are set based on ideal conditions like daylight and dry roads. Anything less than ideal and you should drive according to what conditions demand
also 40 is a 50 is not exactly crawling.
“also 40 is a 50 is not exactly crawling” – no, but it is extremely annoying, I’d say its in the top ten of biggest pet peeves. Oh, and the speed limit does not go down with the sun. LOL
Australia has a law that states – ” if more than 3 cars are being held up behind you, you should pull over and let them overtake”
Makes sense to me.
It is really about respect when it comes down to it.
If you were walking on the sidewalk and you saw someone coming up behind you, wouldn’t you move over to the side? Yes, it is the courteous thing to do.
Spot on Iehova! It is a speed limit. It is illegal to exceed it but it is not illegal to drive within a reasonable speed lower than it. Uniformity not required.
I don’t understand the need for all the hurry unless you are an emergency vehicle driver.
I think in Nova Scotia it’s 8 cars.
really? there’s a number?
it should be published… what with our not-completely-twinned highways and the killer gluts that occur every trip I take.
I’m not sure what’s better… driving 5 under so that everyone who gets to me passes (usually going well over 110) or trying to get their faster and driving like everyone else… ie/ FUCKING CRAZY.
guess it depends on the premise of the trip…
Got to watch out for all those crazies who drive the speed limit.
Yeah, I think there’s a number. I can’t find it now…but I think I saw it in relation to slow moving vehicles like tractors and such when there was a bitch about that a few years ago. If I find it again I’ll post the link. I may be talking out of my ass too…sometimes my memories are made up or come from TV.
Brian: “Are you sure it was a book, Peter? Are you sure it wasn’t…nothing?”
heh heh… too true.
just ignore the giant squid….
sadly, I’m spelling nazi-ing my own post so I don’t fuel the fire….
I meant ‘trying to get there’
Page 48. No numbers but it says slow moving vehicles should pullover when safe to let accumulating traffic to pass. Best I can do to back up my comment.

Speed Limit?!?!?! Oh shit…I thought those signs were a suggestion. ; )
I jest, but I do drive the limit…or 5 over; I know, I know I am a DURRRTY SPEEDER!
I never push it when the conditions are poor, though I do have full winter tires with studs. Makes me laugh to see the idiots still driving with all-seasons or summer tires on…fuck those people are stupid.
Fuck off, OP. It’s winter.
So have you noticed the regular snow and greasy as fuck roads or what.
haha try the deerfoot in calgary when you get one doing 50 in a 90 in the middle lane !!! I wish i was back driving in halifax . Its not that bad !!! And i mean on dry normal roads . In the winter – they are all in the ditch !!!Yep they all have bald all seasons – they work GREEEEAAAAATTTT in the winter going up hills !!!
Speed limits here in Nova Scotia are weird sometimes. Some places where the limit is a lot higher than it should be, but plenty more where it’s lower than it should be. Why is the speed limit on our divided highways only 110 km/hr, seriously? It could probably easily be 130 km/hr. It is in other countries and works fine.
Some posts here obviously reflecting a lack of driving experience, and insight into our archaic NS “Speed Limits”. Not surprising then, that there are so many “bus” posts on here….few of you drive, do you?
With the exception of some of the twinned 100 series highways, which after much lobbying were raised to 110, NS speed limits are a throwback to the 1960’s when cars (and people) where comfortable driving at 30 and 40 miles per hour.
Many of these speed limits need to be increased IMO, to reach ‘parity’ (a word we all now know) with the rest of the developed world. I am often left shaking my head at the stupid 50 and 70 kph zones on roads in NS that could easily support higher limits. No-one is following them anyway, except, of course me, and I often have a trail of impatitent and angry 4-wheelers behind my truck. This, of course, leads to poor judgement on passing, tailgating etc… it’s human nature to get a bit impatient after a while when the limits are clearly too low.
Our archaic speed limits, designed for ’57 Chevy’s and trundling jalopys with drum brakes all ’round, bald tires and old “armstrong” steering…enough is enough. It’s time to raise the speed limits on those areas where people are already driving safely at a higher speed…except of course for that one eco-warrior in his borrowed car; face planted to the wind-screen, CBC blaring on the FM, eyes fixated on that speedo: “Musn’t exceed 50! MUST-SAVE-PLANET!” as he trundles along Kearney Lake Road at 50 fucking kilometers an hour on his way to check the new vegan restaurant in Tantallon. Ridiculous.
And to drive UNDER an already too-low limit? That’s just wrong. If you see 20 or 30 cars behind you, you are causing a dangerous situation with your selfish driving, get off the road! The ‘slow moving” vehicle laws are a special case BTW and refer to farm and construction equipment, licensed to travel slow, and carrying a warning light. If you drive your CAR at that speed, you are mentally ill (aka retarded)
In Lower Michigan, for instance, the highways leaving Detroit have a 70 MPH limit AND a 55 minimum. Niiiice.
In Florida now, you can be ticketed for going less than 65 in the hammer lane…sweeeet.
For instance, I am in south Texas right now…heading from Brownville north…the limit is 80MPH on the interstates, 80MPH, that’s what, 140 KPH, and guess what? Nobody speeds here. Funny how that works. The police do other things like solve crimes and look for “weaving” and drunk drivers etc, and not just sit in their cruisers playing on their SmartPhone until another sucker comes along the straightaways in Lunenburg county at 91 in an “80KPH” zone (speed trap) and has to pay 150 bucks “toll”…
tough to speed when trying to go 140 in a 120 bhp economy car…
I don’t think I’ve ever even driven faster than 140 before.
I think I did hit it though before decelerating.
30 over and you get reckless driving added to your ticket and lose your license for a bit. I don’t need that.
an issue with raising limits is also the proportion of crashes that could result in death rather than injury. The autobahn is great, everyone can drive however fast they wish….and most do. they have very few accidents, though the ones that occur are almost always fatal.
Think “scooping you up with a ladle” bad…
@ BMF, Well said!!! Coming over the Lake Echo hill this morning at an astounding 10KM/h was infuriating. Fucking assholes, there’s the old #7 if you’re that fucking scared. There’s cautious, then there’s that bullshit, 10 Km per fucking hour for christ sakes!
