For fuck sakes already! I am not spending a shitload of money on organic food so that you can fit into a stupid subculture, and I’m not standing in a grocery store while you yell at me for picking out the food we can AFFORD. If you had your way we’d be eating two meals a week.
Organic food is not better for you than non-organic food, it does not taste better and pesticides and genetically modified foods are not evil. I grew up on a farm, every fucking farmer uses pesticides you dolt, “organic” or not! If they didn’t they wouldn’t be able to operate in today’s economy because they wouldn’t be able to grow enough produce!!! Why are you city folk so horribly misinformed? Do you just go along with whatever fucking corrupt Greanpeace tells you? You are the most annoying, holier-than-thou person I have ever met, you go on and on about the evils of genetically modified food and pesticides. How about you decide which people on earth should starve to death in the absence of GM food and pesticides and and then come back and tell me again about how “evil” it is…FUCK!!!
Stop pestering me, trying to convert me into some self-righteous mindless hipster zombie like yourself. It’s not that you believe in this shit that pisses me off, it’s that you constantly look down on your redneck roommate for this type of stupid shit! And now you’re not talking to me because I refuse to pool my money and buy this crappy overpriced and over-hyped food? FUCK YOU. Every compromise I suggested you shot down. I know you read this religiously so I’m taking this opportunity to say that I’ve had enough of your bullshit, and I’m moving out. I know we only have a couple months left before we go back to where we came from but I honestly can not stand your drama anymore, not even for that long. —”Stupid Redneck”

Amen sister
tell them you’re thinking of trying long pig then lick your lips
yeah but, and that’s all i’ll say to the whole veggie bullshit. look at the chinese, their teeth are next to non existant, hint, they eat a whole lot of rice. which by the way, is a veggie. next we look at apes, chimps and shit, check out their mouths close up,and their farts stink worse than pickled fucking eggs. now we have horses, take a peek inside their mouth sometime, yepper, you know they eat hay and other grasses, and apples and shit too. man was created to be a carnivore, not a little piss ant leaf eating slug. so, have a big one with lots of real cheese, and tell the veggie friend to eat shit and die.
high five!
Environmental trendiness annoys me. I wanted to go out and by a shit load of no-name Plastic bags, just so I could bring those to use at grocery stores.
LS, rice is a grain, not a vegetable. Did you make it out of Elementary, bud?
I’m all for the meat and potatoes of this bitch. I hate how people feel superior nowadays because they eat “organic” food and “free-range” meat. Or the “Slow Food Movement”.
Redneck, well said. And yes rice is a grain, not a veggie.
Hear hear! Best bitch so far of the year.
I intentionally don’t buy any of that “locally grown organic fair-trade free-range” hippy crap because I don’t want to be associated with those fucking hippies. I go out of my way to make sure everything I buy has been modified somehow by some poor slave in the third world and has produced the largest carbon footprint possible. Fuck you, hippies!
The roommate sounds like a self-righteous dickhole.
That being said, I think I need to disagree with the OP on the whole “Organic food is not better for you than non-organic food” thing… At the end of the day, a non-organic apple is way better than no apple. And obviously pesticides aren’t “evil”, that’s ridiculous. But they ARE, essentially, poison. Pesticides are toxic substances (= not good for you) and we spray that shit on our food. Then we rinse it under a cold tap and call it fine.
http://www.cape.ca/toxics/pesticides.html
None of that gives the roommate reason to act like a spoiled baby. Organic food is too goddamn expensive.
Side note to LS: WTF are you on about? Thank you for the insanity. Loved it. I really mean that.
rice is a grain, yes. but put that in the samegeneral group as veggies. and apples are fruit, i know that too. but a steady diet of either one, and you are fucked as a human. we were made to eat other animals, period.
Yeah, good bitch. I find most people that “get back to nature” and only eat organic and wear tight pants (the whole get up, you know what I mean) REALLY romanticize farm life, food production, and organic living. Most of the time, they’ve never spent 5 minutes on a real farm, are from Toronto, and shop at mega-stores for their “fashions” in an attempt to look unique while looking just like the rest of their friends. It’s weird. I wish they knew what being on a real farm was like, or living in a rural area for that matter, and how hard it is to make a go as an organic farmer, or any farmer, that isn’t a corporate-sponsored monopoly. You can’t wear your hipster doofus sunglasses while shoveling shit at 6:00am.
A good friend of mine recently married a guy like this.
The guy is a classic West Coast pseudo-hippie, who thinks he’s the real deal. He pretends to be so “harmonious” so “mellow” and so “laid back”, but he an absolute asshole to everyone, ESPECIALLY to women working in the service industry who aren’t “accomodating” enough to his exhaustive list of self-imposed “special dietary requirements.”
We almost got kicked out of my very favourite restaurant because of “his royal highness.” Since NOT ONE item on the menu matched his unique and unbendable “special needs” he insisted that EACH DISH BE RE-MADE, JUST FOR HIM, while everyone else would still have the “normal” version—so, yeah, TWO versions of everything, please, and don’t use the same pots and pans and don’t allow anything “contaminate” each other. The entire dinner was an embarrassing social disaster, and I have yet to go back to the place, lest I be remembered by the staff.
There is an actual name for this problem: “Orthorexia.” It is when people make up impossibly strict food requirements for themselves, and then criticize themselves and others for the inevitable “failures” that happen when perfection can’t be achieved.
Next time they’re in town, HE is getting dropped off at McDonald’s, where he can sort it out himself, while my friend and I will enjoy a pleasant, unrestricted, dinner elsewhere.
I don’t eat dairy, red meat or seafood/fish but not by choice (well, the seafood and fish is. YUCK!). It all makes me so sick 🙁 So, I’m stuck with my soy, grains, fruits and veggies. It makes it really hard eating out. Probably why I don’t that often. My friends and family like to make fun of me for it because I’m the “salad queen.” I’d rather be able to eat normal 🙁 Oh well. C’est la vie.
I buy my beef from a local farmer, free range & not pumped full of antibiotics like the feedlot beef is. IT’s not even priced more expensively, because I but a bunch at a time, it works out to be cheaper than the stuff from the big box grocery stores & none of my meat has red die in it .
I buy my eggs from a woman who lives 5 minutes away, You gotta be careful pulling into her yard, the chickens are usually out & about.
We get our fish right off the boat from a couple of fishermen I’m related to…
All this is personal choice, to get less growth hormone ,die & antibiotics in my food, the fish is because I get it cheaper, if that means I’m part of the organic movement, that’s your label for it, fine . I’m just trying to eat healthier & save money, the added bonus is the stuff tastes better, because its fresh, hasn’t been prefrozen !
geekchic, ever see the bullshit on organic food?
it’s amazing what people make themselves believe when they think they are getting benefits. I can let all the corperate crap go if you wish.. but their public tests kinda speak for them self.
This half of the banana tastes WAY better, it must be organic…. oops, they’re two halves of the same banana.
i’m with more on the meat…i buy from meadowbrook farms, tho we don’t eat meat everyday…chick peas baby!!! right outta the can
http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2010/03…
Poor guys.
that’s what Jurassic Park was talking about…
that’d be one bitchy pond.
Wrong again LS. Putting grain in the same group as an apple is like saying a carrot is like a rose. The point is, regardless of how you may feel, the human body is omnivorous, and is quite adaptable, although there os some evidence that the “Paleolithic Diet” is probably the closest that we’ll get to our natural diet, which comprises primarily of raw berries, raw plants, raw vegetables, nuts and little to no meat.
Ruby, your friend sounds like a guy who sat behind me at Chives one night. He went on and on about how he wanted to tell the head chef his particular ethical issues with meat touching his food. Oy vey.
omfg i have a special hate for birkenstock shod, hemp cloth wrapped;patchouli doused, haki sack play’n,acai juice swill’n, quinoa powered, tree hugg’n, animal sav’n, kumbaya sing’n arm pit hair flow’n, body piercing aflow’n hippy freaks even try’n to teel me how the world should be. good thing i’m in Vancouver cause theres not many around here 🙂
Let’s see, I was at Sobey’s about a month ago and saw two turkeys (no it wasn’t Kelly and Sloane). One organic, free range, one normal and both the same size. The price on the organic was $125.00, yes $125.00, the other about $50.00. Which would you buy? I know I could do a lot with that extra $75.00.
“they’ve never spent 5 minutes on a real farm, are from Toronto” FUCK YOU asshole. hey dickhole im from the Toronto area…called the niagara green belt, which produces the second largest volume of produce in all of canada next to the okanagan valley, so shut the fuck up. Ive farmed lets see, pig, turkey, chickens, worked at orchards consisting of peach, apple and cherry, AND had a girlfriend in highschool who i helped with their vineyard. SO go fuck yourself with your bullshit pal. No wonder people outside of this shithole HATE dickholes that come from this province like you. i say again BIG FUCK YOU.
yes cuja, the holland marsh grows some wonderful stuff…there is more to ontario then just toronto.
i have done some farming as well…sheep are not bright baaaaaaaaaa
i usually get all my fresh meat from gateway, on the #7 hiway in dartmouth. it is all local and fresh. problem is, they can’t keep enough in stock, and prices are less than half of ss or sobeys most times. as to being a real farmer, i too was brought up on a farm in digby neck, stayed with uncle and aunt til i was 12, then came to live in this festering fucking cesspool we call halifax. omnivoris, carnivore, big deal, if you wanna be a fruit and berry person, go for it. i like my dead animal on my plate. makes me wanna go and get a (yuk) big one right now(puke, puke).
hahahaha, this was great.
LS: Gateway is fucking awesome!!! I go there all the time to get party food. It’s a great place to get large amounts of ribs or wings for a killer price. Nothing like cooking up 100 wings and 6 racks of ribs, all ready to get washed down with ice cold beer while watching the fights with friends… (waiting for NGF to chime in…)
Also: Now I understand why you’re so angry all the time. Hell, if I grew up on “the Neck”, I’d be pissed off 24/7 too! I grew up in “the Royal” and it was bad enough!
and NW, I guess since we’re using nicknames, I grew up near the ‘urethra’ of nova scotia….
right at the tip where both highways end.
* shudder *
zZz: “The Neck” is what we called Digby Neck in my hometown and “The Royal” is what the Digby kids called Annapolis Royal where I grew up. I take it you’re from Yarmouth area. We used to take day trips down there for something to do. That’s how boring it is where I grew up. Day trips to Yarmouth were “exciting”.
yeah, I’ve been ’round digby…
’bout as exciting as eating the cardboard box LS’s keyboard condoms come in.
yarmouth isn’t any better though… just different scenery.
Instead of the crack smell wafting up over digby you get the alcohol and urine smell engulfing the place from all the bootlegging camps a half mile outta town.
I stand by my nickname though… we are “The urethra” of the huge gnarly cock that is Nova Scotia.
zZz: No, I haven’t seen it. I have seen other episodes, and sometimes I agree, and sometimes I don’t. Just because Penn and Teller (well, I guess not Teller) say it, doesn’t make it true. They have stated plenty of times that the show is “fair, but biased”. I like the show, and they make good points. Sure, people can convince themselves of anything. All I’m saying is that pesticides are toxic. That’s the whole point of pesticides, to be toxic. We then spray them on our food. Seems pretty logical that it’s probably a good idea to avoid ingesting toxic chemicals.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I eat something organic, it’s not because it ‘tastes better’. I’m simply trying to limit my poison intake. That seems pretty reasonable to me.
The Gateway place sounds good, I didn’t know about it. It’s out on Main St? Is it mostly just a meat place, or is it more of a full market?
geekchick: It’s a meat market. They’re not far past the Forest Hills Parkway, up Main St. Their prices and selection are fantastic.
PS> You STILL have the best AV on here. Long live FF3!!
geekchick, pesticides are poison to parasites and bugs, not humans.
Actually fizz, pesticides are quite hazardous to humans. Take nicotine for example.
“3 million workers in agriculture in the developing world experience severe poisoning from pesticides, about 18,000 of whom die”
no matter… they must have been pests.
zZz – if you think we have it bad…the combined territories of finland and sweden should be censored from the map.
talk about veggie heaven commercial drive is the capital of Canada (and i’ve been around) for selection and price of excelent quality produce today: broccoli crowns .79/pnd. yellow peppers 99; bok choy tak choy .99 beauty french grn beans 1.99 ; tomato .99 etc 🙂
Thanks, NW. FF forever!!
“To say confusion exists among consumers as to what “organic” means is an understatement. A big thanks goes to those brilliant marketers who have extracted almost every English word that connotes organic – natural, naturally raised, free range, hormone-free and additive-free – each meaning nothing specific and far from being “certified organic”.
In Canada, a study of mortality in 70,000 Saskatchewan farmers showed a positive association between non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the number of acres sprayed with herbicides. Farmers know agricultural chemicals are designed to kill and they are becoming increasingly conscious of the negative effects of these chemicals on the broader environment and on human health. They feel, though, that they need to use these chemicals in order to keep their farms viable. The more we buy from local organic farmers, the more we will convince other farmers to make the transition away from the use of synthetic chemicals.
