There are no jobs here. I can’t believe I’m writing a ‘no job’ bitch, but really, it is alarming how few postings there are for upper-level positions since September. It is disappointing and sad. With over 5 years of experience and 2 advanced degrees, I haven’t had an interview in 3 months. I don’t want to work retail. I’m too smart and educated and innovative to work retail. But that’s all there is. That, and call centres. And used car salesmen. I committed to staying in my home province and now I regret it. If we have a defeatist culture here, there’s a good fucking reason why. I’m going to have to leave to make it. —How Sad

There are few jobs listed in the newspaper, true; I think you’re looking in the wrong places.

Good luck on the job hunt, you didn’t mention what your degrees are in or experience, maybe with info some here can point you in the right direction.
you could always open your own place…
be an entrepreneur.
The Rub and Tug business is under-represented in hellifax.
you have to go, where the best choices are for you and family, if you have one. i had to travel more than once, to secure a good wage, and safe work for us. it is something we all have to do, sometimes.
5 years experience and two advanced degrees………AND you are qualified for an upper-management position – how?
Get the fuck out, another crazy in the soup line………geezuz, where are they coming from today?
‘ I’m too smart and educated and innovative to work retail.’
Maybe you should work on that ego problem of yours before you go for more interviews, because even if you can’t, the people hiring can smell your shit stinking.
Well, you’ll be happy to know it was reported in the paper recently that in 5 years Halifax will have zero unemployment. And the next few years will see a huge upsurge in jobs due to the shipping contract. Just wait a few years and Halifax WILL be the place to be!
Hang in there and be positive. Good things come to those that believe good things can happen to them. The market has changed but there are still a lot of jobs. Show people your resume maybe there is something on it that needs some work.
Agree with SwampDonkey on this one…Having an attitude like that is probably the reason why you have yet to score an interview. i know many of people who have gone to university and graduated and work in retail. Although you wouldn’t think it but being a manager in a well-known company working retail does pay surprisingly well. Not all retail workers make 10$ an hour and hate their lives. Move to Toronto, you sound like you would fit in there VERY well..
If you are unemployed, you better be looking for entry level and middle level positions in your field. 5 yrs of experience is fuck all for an upper level position
No one wants to do a job below what they perceive they are entitled to. But here’s the thing. No matter who you are, the higher the job you want, the longer you have to wait, or the farther you have to go to get it.
The question is, whether its too far beneath you to take a lower job for now till something better comes along.
Don’t look in the newspaper for upper level positions … use careerbeacon. And, find a recruiter that specializes in your field … send them your resume and meet with them.
Don’t generalize your value on a bitch board by telling us how smart and educated you are, but demonstrate it on your resume with specifics. If you’re not getting interviews for positions that you feel you’re qualified to fill, it’s because your resume/cover letter isn’t up to par and automatically goes to the reject pile … or, really, your two degrees and 5 years experience aren’t enough for the upper level positions you feel you deserve.
Suck up your pride and do as GV suggests … look for entry to mid level positions; because I also agree that 5 years experience doesn’t mean squat. I do wish you luck in your search, but without more information it does appear you need to manage and adjust your own expectations … otherwise you’ll never be satisfied and always feel you’re getting the short end of the stick. But, if you take my advice and meet with a recruiter … they will tell you how it is … you just have to be prepared to hear it.
After reading haligonia87’s post I think their real identity is either Hiz Onner ‘stache boy Kelly or that other tub thumper Fidel Dexter aka pork chop.
The unemployment rate will be zero after EMERA have finished boning us rectally with rate increase on top of rate increase – Seb; down boy, it’s just a turn of phrase not a turn the other cheek issue.
Why are you unemployed then? If you have all the talent, experience and education, you should never be unemployed, you should never let your old job expire before you have a new one. Did you get fired? Did you quit? Did your company downsize or go bankrupt? So many questions as to why you aren’t getting interviews. Halifax is a small city and your reputation can easily follow you from employer to employer. How many jobs have you had in 5 years? Do you have letters of reference from past employers? Before pointing the finger at everything else, perhaps a little self assessment may be in order. After reading your bitch, I was left with the impression that your ego may be your biggest enemy.
OB, 3 months is not very long to be unemployed…not here, not now anyway.
It took my friend 6 months of looking to get something decent, she was educated, yrs of experience and had multiple interviews for various positions.
She now has a great job, and getting additional offers as we speak.
Take some more time, brush up on your interview skills, volunteer – you never know who you’ll meet at various organizations. It can be a great way to network and get your foot in the door.
Some people will say ‘It’s a who you know market’ but I think you need to consider that it is really a ‘who you meet market’ so get the hell out there and meet as many people as you can.
You have to think of yourself as a salesperson. A successful salesperson only gets a meeting 1 out of every 10 times they cold call a secretary. And they maybe only close ( make a sale ) with 1 out of 10 meetings. Are you truly working that hard at your job search?
Ummm most industries treat 5 years experience as “mid level,” not “upper level.”
Upper level = 10+
Try checking that ego at the door.
Also: I agree with SHITTY-D.
OB, there are jobs out there. You must be looking in the wrong places. In Halifax, it’s all in who you know. That’s how you get the good jobs. Leave the retarded and uneducated to work in retail and call centers.
