I drink milk because I like it. Four liters of milk here costs pretty much 8 bucks. In other cities around Canada it’s $4.50-$5.50. In mega-expensive Fort Mcmurray it’s only 4 bucks. Around the world it is also much cheaper than here. I don’t understand it. People go mental over the price of gas which comes from the middle east, but nobody gives a hoot that the milk produced in our own backyard is a total gouge.
Just be happy you don’t have to fill your car up with milk.

Lets see, $8.00 milk here and $150,000 for a half decent home here, or $4.00 milk and $299,000 for a shitbox of a trailer or over half a mil for a comparable house in Ft Mac. I think I know what I’m choosing.
What plane of existence are you on? 150 K in Halifax? Maybe in the middle of butt-fuck-nowhere, 150 K maybe gets you a 15 year old duplex in bad repair in Halifax. As to the milk question, over the age of 5, you actually don’t need Milk for proper health, so, suck it up and stop acting like a kid.
Try rice milk or almond milk. Dairy is notorious for causing constipation because it stops the motility of your digestive system.
Soy’s ok too, but compared to rice or almond milk it tastes like ASS, especially if it’s made with uncooked beans.
You can find versions of all three of these products that have A LOT less carbs than dairy milk too.
Just wondering, whats the comparative cost between cows milk and the alternatives?
The alternatives are a lot more(litre or so of almond milk is like 4-5 bucks). Dairy is generally fatty, and this is what can cause constipation in some people. You generally have to be eating a lot of it, or have intolerance problems.
a 2L carton of soy milk was $3.99 this week at a store that’s super.
Almond milk is on sale for 2/$4 on 1L cartons…some worry about the phytoestrogens in soy milk and women’s health so I stick with almond or rice milk (they taste better too).
It *is* a bit more expensive, I will admit, but I think it’s worth it (especially if you’re concerned about digestive health) 🙂
Swampdonkey: I’ve never paid more then $2.89 for a 1L carton of almond milk. There’s also a brand of rice milk that’s ~$2.29 for a 1L and I buy it regularly.
Also: (sorry for the third post) it’s the whey and caesin that can cause the digestive problems. I completely cut dairy out and my digestive system did a complete 180. Even mashed potatoes made with dairy fucks me up for a few days.
I would avoid the soy milk if you’re a manly man and/or are trying to bulk up… it ups the estrogen production and won’t help you in the gym. It does taste good though on cereal. Adds to the flavor, if you ask me.
That being said, I prefer milk to other calcium sources/supplements and it’s BECAUSE of the whey and casein. That good stuff gives SOME people digestive issues because it takes longer to digest than most proteins so it feels like you’re fuller longer. Weight-lifters actually buy it to add to their nightly meal so they don’t start burning that hard-earned muscle for fuel when they’re sleeping.
That and the lactose is quick digesting so if I’m dying of hunger (especially right when I wake up), I get a glass of milk in me asap so I have time to make breakfast before my stomach starts to growl again.
People tend to be picky about what they can and can’t have early in the morning though. Suppose I’m just lucky.
anyways, don’t we have Dairy Farms out in the boonies? Baxters and Farmers farms? why the fuck is it so bloody expensive then?
4L of milk is %5.39 at Sobeys in Clayton Park. Once in a while it goes up to 6.19, but that store always sells milk at cost or below.
I hear that shit! Imagine if we used milk to run our vehicles with. Gasoline is one of the cheapest liquids on the market. Look at bottled water, its a dollar for 375ml. What is with the atlantic provinces always getting raped & mugged by the federal / provincial government while the rest of the country sits on the high hog? Fuck it, I’m gonna buy a goat and make my own milk. If it doesn’t work out at least I’ll have souvlaki for a few weeks. Yum!
I don’t know if anyone watched the local and national news last night, but there was a great story about food costs done by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
I agree with you OP. I lived in Alberta for 5 months and Lord behold, I spent less money living there in 5 months than I used to spend in NS, and we’re talking mega bucks!
Seriously, I used to get 2 chicken breasts, about 5-6 apples, some orange juice, milk, bread, tea, some veggies, last me for about 2 weeks I’d say, all for less than $30. I couldn’t believe it when I got that. $50 here last me maybe 2-3 days!
I bought 2 bags of chips, some tofu, 2 green, 1 yellow, 1 red bell peppers, mushrooms onions, not much eh, no meat involved, $26.70. That’s just sick.. 1 Yellow pepper was like $2.26. I couldn’t believe it. it’s truly sick! Dr. Fever, I did. I couldn’t believe that almost half of Canadians can’t afford to buy healthy food, this is how expensive it is!!!! and some of this shit is local.
Why would anyone want to drink milk squeezed from another animal in the first place?
It’s all about the vanilla soy milk.
I’ve never bought it on sale(I only get it when I cook for vegan guests), so I’m usually paying full price, and apparently, the health department at the same store is rooking my ass.
High fat also leads to the no-goes, though. 🙂 I’ve personally never had problems, but I *kill* dairy. I usually have about a half litre of milk a day at the least.
