Okay, this is getting annoying, to say the least. I work. I pay taxes. I contribute to EI. So, when I need help why can’t I get it? I was not asked to be let go from my job. I bent over backward for the bitch (coming in early, staying late etc.). I increased her sales and marketability. And I got paid. Fair enough. So, the bitch let’s me go… no warning, no severance, nothing. Just ‘That’s it– begone!’. So I applied for assistance where I lived. I couldn’t get rent money so I had to leave my house. Also fair enough. I had to stay with some friends in a different city and applied for assistance again (in the same province, in the same country where I pay taxes) and I was told I had to wait sixty days. Apparently they think I was trying to pull a fast one even though I DID NOT receive any assistance in the first town I applied in. The worker suggested that I apply for EI in the meantime. I was not sure about that, but I did it anyway. A few days later I received an instruction sheet with an access code and instruction on when to file my reports. Okay, well that’s good, I paid into it, I should be able to get some help. So I file my reports. Then get a phone call from Service Canada. THIS broad wants more clarification as the bitch is making shit up about things I did not do, or things that she did not do. So, now I can’t get any help from either place. This is what working for nearly 30 years will get you—exactly NOTHING! All I want is a little help from the program (EI) that was set up for just such an emergency as this. In the 28 years I have been in the work force I have been on EI twice when contracts ran out and I was laid off. Someone told me I should have lied when I applied and said I was laid off this time as well. I wish I could lie. Then I might get some help. Stupid me. —Still Steamed

  1. I think I know who the OP is and 🙁

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. I hope things turn around really fast!

  2. This sounds very much like our beloved Black Rose. So sorry to hear about the bullshit runaround and I really wish I had some concrete answers for you. I just feel sad, angry and a bit fearful for the day I’m in your position. Sorry Darlin’.

  3. Don’t you love Canada? The land where we give out hundreds of Millions to countries to help their people but when Canadians need help, the government simply says fuck ’em?

  4. To be more specific Al, it seems to be the Canadians who tried to do everything the right way (education, hard work, taxes) who get fucked over the hardest. Our sacred social safety net sounds more and more like the insurance biz every goddamned day. “Pay your premiums and you are our best friend; actually need help – Fuck You Charlie, Read the fine print.”
    Assholes.

  5. You know what frosts my cupcakes? When people on EI get dumped on and treated like people on welfare. I remember being in high school and having a discussion in class about this stuff and this one chick was going on about how people on EI were bums and I laid into that bitch. You don’t pay into EI, you don’t get it. And you need almost 1000 hours to qualify if you’re getting it for the first time so it’s not like you can work for a couple months and claim EI benefits.

My teacher told me after class he was proud of me for doing so 🙂

  6. oh dear god Ivan….
please don’t bring up insurance scams yet again…
Mr Ed’s been turned into glue long ago.

  7. When you say you pay taxes, what taxes do you mean? Do you own property that you pay tax on or do you just mean sales tax?

  8. ..yea let me guess you’re a swm..become an oppressed pregnant refugee ….and cha-ching…away you go..

  9. funny how we hear only from her side of the story..if she was a serious employee, why would an employer let her go? I think i smell another worthless bull shit story!

  10. yeah o.p., life does indeed suck, and as such, we all have to make sure, that it doesn’t suck the life from us. hang in there kiddo, better days are really ahead, fuck the system good if you get a chance, because it will fuck you every chance.

  11. 30 years work and you have no savings, RRSP’s, investments, pension?

What kind of a plan did you have for the “Golden Years’? Not even a ‘golden parachute’ to save yer ass!

  12. “I should have lied when I applied and said I was laid off this time as well” not real, it’d show on your record of employment why you no longer have work. Also, people abuse the EI system a lot and they need to clarify things on both ends. If you don’t get it, appeal. You get a hearing and can say everything you want to say. People don’t realise no one is trying to scam you, the system isn’t built to fail. Some times there are oversights and it’s up to you to go and get what you want.

  13. “Begone” … that made me laugh. Reminds me of a friend of mine who told his GF “Poof with you.” OP, 28 years….you should have had a sweet nest egg saved up in that time frame. The last few years have been excellent for investing after everyone dumped stocks and people like myself could buy it up cheap and see the full returns in just two years.

  14. rubywave: I think when they say “I pay taxes” I’m 99% sure they mean income tax, EI and all those other great deductions. If you had to ask what taxes they are paying, you should take a look at someone’s pay stub when they are making over minimum wage and see what the “income tax paid” line says. Then work out the percentage. The more you make the more they take.

“the only two things that are certain in life are death, and taxes.”
