To the guy who dropped 700 American dollars on my counter and expected to exchange it without a fee or and give you back 20 cents to the dollar, fuck you. Honestly, a big, fat, fuck you. Your muttered “fuckin’ Canadians” as you turned your back and walked away is so typical of your country’s passive-aggressive bullshit. I don’t control what the economy does, and I really don’t care that you got 40 cents to the dollar when you visited 10 years ago. Take your Texas sized beer belly and and jump off the closest pier.

Muttering “fucking Canadian” loud enough for you to hear it is not passive-aggressive, its aggressive-aggressive.
TIt’s a give and take relationship, their tourist dollars help keep a large number of small businesses afloat and in return we have to put up with some shitty “tourist behavoiur”. Soon it will be October and they’ll all be gone home. Until then grit your teeth and smile.
Oops, Tit’s = It’s……Sorry for the silly typo.
^Freudian slip Jai?
Tell the fucker to go to a bank if he wants the exact exchange rate. Better yet, tell him to exchange his money BEFORE coming next time. That way he can get an unsatisfactory eschange rate from his OWN people. Who’s he gonna blame then?
I’ll tell ya, this guy wouldn’t get a better exchange rate at the banks… in fact I think this guy went to a bank to get the exchange. Most banks in Canada charge for non-client services (especially exchanging cash, as US citizens exchanging US cash especially leaves them open for counterfeit bills), and the he would have gotten his exchange at the market rate plus about 2-2.5%. He was probably pissed off because his bank in the states was only giving him 1.05 CAD for 1 USD. Then when he got on the cruise ship, they wouldn’t exchange it, then when he gets here, he finds most of the businesses only taking USD at par. Then in typical Yank fashion, he gets pissed off because he’s used to having his feet licked for his tourist dollars.
uh, bank’s don’t give exact exchange rate…
if you sit there all day and exchange the same money from canadian to …
zimbobwianian to whatever… and back again, they will eventually bleed you dry.
In fact, if the line is short enough, you’re better to play a vlt.
though I wouldn’t recommend it. I hear those things are addictive.
If he wants a good exchange, I hear Kabul has WILD wagon rides through some interesting parts of town.
Why did you tell him to simply go back to where he came from? And a, “fucking nazi….,” as his back was turned.
There is more to this story than what the OP is revealing. And its probably significant enough that if we were given the bigger picture, this heinous yankee might somehow appear in a different light…
Knowing the dollar value of the underlying transaction, and giving some indication as to the good or service in trade would probably help a lot…
For example, if this were a $10 transaction at some coffee-swill franschise location, then the preceding comments might be in line… On the other hand if this was an $800 CDN bill at a fine dining establishment, I suggest a bit of “handling the situation” by the OP might yield a better result.
But something tells me that the reality of this situation was a little closer to my 2nd example than the 1st, and therefore the better response for all concerned was likely left on the table… Too bad…
OP, I am certainly willing to reconsider my response in light of a few more details…
Floyd, You’re right, but sometimes it SUCKS to take the high road. At least you laughed all the way to the bank.
There is an old saying- Pigs don’t know pigs stink.
fuckin’ Americans
Ouch guys, this hurts. Though I will agree that most of us are complete jerks (not one of them, thank the lord), I can’t wait to get the hell out of this septic waste tank. But not EVERYONE here is a total a-hole. I can understand where the OP comes from though.
I’ve worked in the tourism industry for a few years now, so I have had a loooooot of experience with the tourists off the cruise-ships, and a large part of the blame can be put on the ships themselves– the staff don’t warn their passengers that many businesses don’t take US dollars, and they definitely don’t say that if we do, it’s at par. Hell, some of the cruise lines don’t even tell their passengers that we’re in a different time zone! Super convenient if you’re booking someone for a boat tour with a specific departure time.
LOL good bitch. Send him off to Blue Beach minutes before high tide and tell him to take the trail to the right until he gets to a big stone structure that’s really interesting 😛
Where do people actually exchange currency here?
Same as the US, or Bahamas. I didn’t notice any places to exchange money. I was in the middle east and Europe and they have plenty of places specifically for that.
With tourism here, how come we don’t have one here?
uh randomness… I think that’s because we have banks.
seriously, we do! like 5 different ones with branches all over the place.
they even have other countries monies too!
if you think it’d be so profitable, why you should start one up!
before you know it you’ll be making cents on the dollar!
that’s about the only cents you’ll ever make.
zZz, I checked with a bank before here, if it’s not American $$$, they’ll have to order it, it would take 1-3 business days. I’m sure the tourist is going to wait.
I went on vacation and I wanted to exchange money before leaving, that’s what the bank told me, 3 branches, not just one, and they’re 3 different banks.
I decided to wait, got to my destination and exchanged the money at the airport.
We should have a currency exchange office in Pier 21 actually, where the cruise ships anchor.
