Dear The Coast, I just moved here so please excuse me if I don’t know what I’m talking about (I probably shouldn’t take you so seriously), but your articles seem pretty politically biased. Yes, put out the facts, but don’t print opinions that only show one side of the political spectrum. That’s Fox New’s shtick and that is not showing journalistic integrity. Journalistic integrity is a thing still, right? Is The Coast just for opinions and stupid questions with only one answer? If it is, I’m sorry. I’m wrong. Like I said, I’m new here, but come on, do better. I also want to say, the Liberals aren’t bad, incompetent or evil. They just have a different political viewpoint than some people, including me. —Do Better Journalism

BWA HA HA HA – The Scroat is Pravda for hipster locavore anarcho-twat commutards. It ought to be a monthly because it’s nothing but a red rag. A self congratulatory one that loves the smell of it’s own wind.
I read Jacob Boon’s article on the Liberals and wondered if he was really being paid by the PCs…
You’ve hit the nail on the head OB; this paper/blog/site is heavily censored and terribly bias.
While they teach journalistic integrity in university, the practice of such seems to go out the window. They encourage free speech but will pull a comment that doesn’t meet with their opinions.
The Coast now sits on both sides of the fence, balancing itself between being a traditional news of list vs being “a rag” like Frank Magazine. What was once a quality publication, it has deteriorated significantly in a poorly-managed attempt to “stay fresh”.
Sadly, your words, as well as mine and others, will fall on deaf ears. Don’t be mistaken, them posting your Bitch means nothing.
Its free so we mostly just let it go. You missed some good times, Chris Benjamin and Tim Bousquet rocked this joint like no tomorrow.
I just wish they’d get more sexy like Vice.
This political bias phenomenon isn’t just limited to Fox News and The Coast. Most papers and news outlets lean one way or another. One thing is for sure though, they will be hardest on the party in power. I’d say the coast leans more to the left than supports the PCs. And what does the left hate? Austerity budgets.
Even though we may have different views than the liberals, you can’t say they’ve done a good job executing their plan, and the coast has picked up on this. Sure their is some bias that comes through in the writing, but compared to Fox News? Not even close.
BETTER JOURNALISM
“Yes, put out the facts, but don’t print opinions that show only one side of the political spectrum.” Do Better Journalism
Two points:
(1) As you have not indicated just what those opinions might be which you claim show only one side of the political spectrum, your own comment is self-refuting.
(2) Your assertion that The Coast should limit itself to just printing the “facts” is a common philosophical error. It’s called “empiricism,” the view which attempts (but fails) to reduce all values to measured observables. However, with the exception of things like the weather, all such “facts” in a newspaper are value-laden, whether from the political right or left. (I take it your own derogatory reference to “Fox News” would place you on the left, and that’s fine if you gave reasons in support of that view.) An intelligent reader understands this. It is up to him to assess the validity of all opinions given. Of course, this might involve reading more than one newspaper or columnist to see where they’re coming from.
But you’re right about one thing: If the comments on Bitch are anything to go by – I don’t get the paper itself – The Coast ranks right up (down?) there with the “Volkischer Beobachter.” I know I won’t have to explain the reference.
A pleasure as always,
Cheerio!
The Coast is an alternative weekly paper read by young people, especially young people involved in the arts. Many Liberal policies (cutting the graduate tax rebate; hiking tuition so students can’t even budget for next year; cutting funding to the arts) negatively affect the readership of this paper. The collective view of the Liberals towards young people and particularly young people involved in the arts can be described as “f**k you”. Therefore their editorials write negative opinions on these policies. If you want a more optimistic view of whatever it is the Liberals are doing, The Chronicle Herald would probably be your best bet.
Um, in this province, the Liberal, like the Dippers, are completely incompetent and we will be paying for it for decades.
As for the Coast, it and every other media outlet, are biased one way or the other. There is not an even keel paper, radio, television, or internet outlet out there that isn’t biased.
I don’t think the Coast pretends to do journalism. It’s more like preaching to the choir.
This shit-rag has nothing to do with journalism, it’s more of a self congratulatory, hand job machine for the Coast employees and their friends. The only integrity this place had walked out the door with Tim B., now all that’s left are wankers. The only thing useful this rag has put to print, in the last year or two, was that link to the guy who figured out how to stop your nipples from bleeding while running a marathon.
The new journalism is to get readers by basically advertising like a magazine. Because the new journalism gets funding from advertisements. Welcome to corporate fascism.
