So I often hit up the drive-through of a certain ubiquitous coffee shop on my drive to work out of Halifax, and a few months ago, invested in one of their eco-friendly travel mugs. I was hoping to do my part as I buy coffee pretty much every day. However, I recently figured out that they simply fill a brand new cup with the coffee I request, transfer it into my travel mug, and then throw out the paper one! After observing this several times, I felt the need to tell others—demand that you are not toting your mugs around in vain! “Saving the world one cup at a time”—perhaps you should stick to what you preach. —Disgusted with Thrown Out Cups

  1. That’s Tims for you. I’d suggest buying your coffee elsewhere, their coffee is pretty much shit to begin with anyway.

  2. it’s human nature to be pigs o.p., sometimes the oinker wins out over neatness. look for most all the high paid people doing this, we lowly peons are too neat.

  3. Their excuse is that they’re being “sanitary”. But then I’ve also had it filled without them using the cup, so I dunno.

  4. I wager it’s got nothing to do with sanitary issues and has more to do with them not wanting you to get even slightly more coffee than what you ordered. If your mug is capable of holding a large, but you order a medium, then there’s risk of getting more than a medium poured into the mug without them having a way to measure. They use a paper cup in medium so that they know for certain that you get only what you’re paying for.

I like Mama Gratti’s, it’s one price for all sizes. Makes it simpler. Not a good solution for drive-thru, I know, but just making a point. Maybe other coffee places should try that. Might bring in more customers.

  5. The coffee shop with the bird name ,doesn’t do that at the Enfeild location, I’ve watched from inside as well as at the Drivethru, they just rinse your travel mug & fill ‘er up.

  6. or maybe it’s because you’re using the drive through and they don’t want to wait for you to get to the window to make your coffee.

  7. I agree with TDF. It’s everything to do with not giving you too much coffee. Walking in won’t do anything Guyute.

Although Op..if you really were worried about the “environment” you wouldn’t be going through the drive through to begin with.

This is a valid bitch. It pisses me off, not for the environmental aspect of it. Rather it demonstrates another example of how “environmental” propaganda is used to make an extra buck.

It also pisses me off for the false advertisement aspect of it. I’ve considered going to media over it to see if that would do anything. But, I’m to lazy for that shit.

  8. when i worked at tims i always used to rinse the cup and just make it in that

however there are a few reasons a paper cup gets used and its not about the amount of coffee

its about speed at the drive thru do nt ot he second. its all timed we had one girl that would always make them in a paper cup and just pour it in because she wanted to save that 2 seconds.

another reason is that they didnt say they had a refill mug at the window. beyond that there is no reason i have ever seen other than laziness for not making it directly in the refill mug.

  9. So the OB wants to save the envirnment by using a reusable cup, yet idles the engine of their vehicle while waiting in line to get it. Guyute is right. If you want to be environmental, turn off your vehicle and go in and get it.

  10. Yeah, when I worked at Tims A) I tried hard not to do that, but sometimes orders get needlessly complicated and B) they get paid minimum wage. They don’t really give a shit how much coffee you get vs. how much you ordered. Voice of Treason has it right, it’s about speed of service if you’re talkin’ drive thru.

  11. Dear elusive idiots,

You do realize the “people of Tim Hortons” get paid terrible wages, work like slaves, and also get yelled at when the drive times don’t reach the goals for the day. Also, you pollute the environment more than a wasted cup by idling your car in the drive thru while waiting in the morning line-up.
The reason its in a paper cup is because your car is sitting three cars back when we get your order ready. I know it seems rediculous to not wait until you get to the window, but when you’re trying to keep those drive times up every second counts.
Elimnination of the problem: park your car, get out of your car. Walk your lazy ass into the store. Coffee goes right in cup. Shut up and leave.

  12. Let me re-form that: Dear elusive idiots who do not understand the ways of “behind the counter techniques.” (lol)

Its not about the size of the mugs either, no one cares if you get an inch more coffee than you paid for. Really I promise.
