I need to bitch about the lack of curry houses in this city. I think there are two, one is very expensive and doesn’t do take-out, the other isn’t all that great and you can only choose one topping to go with your poppadoms, the rest they charge extra for… ridiculous!! Oh and there’s that little place in Scotia Square mall but they don’t do a lot of “UK-Indian” type curries. I just want an old fashioned chicken korma or prawn bhuna, or at least my choice of meat, like they do in curry houses in bigger cities. I can make my own using ready-made sauces but it’s not the same. Cmon Halifax, broaden your taste horizons… if you think curry is nasty, you’ve probably only eaten someone’s nasty homemade curry paste.
Take it from me, a former curry hater: once you try it you’ll be hooked.

Hear hear! More Indian! And Nepalese and Tibetan and other related cuisines!I don’t really get why there are so few Indian restos here. There are other Asian restos in spades. The “charge for extras” place is kind of annoying but they do have a MEAN vindaloo. Yum!
While we’re at it…can we get some cheap Thai food? How about an all-you-can eat sushi place??? I don’t need fancy–I need affordable and delicious!!!
i cringe when i hear the words, “cheap” and “all you can eat” in the same sentenceimo, those kind of establishments are for gluttonous pigs who are more concerned with stuffing their faces (with cheap crap) than enjoying a delicious & nutritious meal. why are people so reluctant to spend a little more money on good quality food, and perhaps not gorge themselves in the process??as for thai, yeah i was dating a person from thailand; authentic thai cuisine is AMAZING… and when Thais sit down to eat, they don’t make pigs of themselves either. everything is a la carte, and you only take what you NEED, going back for seconds IF you’re still hungry, not just because it’s ‘cheap’ and you CAN.less is more, people
oh yeah, to the op, i agree, spicy curry dishes are yummy, i’d like to see/taste more *authentic* south asian cuisine in the city too.
Oh god, save me from your pompous, “you must be a pig” attitude. Go to just about any other city in this country and you’ll find exactly what I’m looking for–not CRAP–but delicious and reasonably priced cuisine. When I go out for all you can eat sushi in Toronto, to say, Island Sushi, Katsu, or any other of the restaurants that offer the specials, I’m there for VARIETY not stuffing my fucking face. I went to Hamachi and spent $20 for one roll, and one app. For $17 at Sushi Mooshi in Montreal I can anything I want off the menu so that I can try and taste and share with friends. And it’s not even about all you can eat. Any rest-o in any other city I’ve been in has cheaper sushi than Halifax. As for Thai–again, I’m not looking to glutton myself into a fat, artery-clog oblivion. I want a pad thai for $7. Actually, you can get a decent one at Alteregos on Gottingen, but I’m looking for, again, variety and a price that’s fair. $14 for an entree, and then to pay 2.50 for steamed rice is crazy. I miss Noodle Bowl. I miss Salad King and Flip, Toss and Thai. Hell I miss Pho Hung and their insanely cheap pho thai and getting three giant spring rolls for the same price as I get one tiny one here. I’m not someone that’s “from away” so spare me. I’m born and raised here and I just like to travel. That being said, I of course, also know there isn’t as much competition here, not as much demand either. I’m not expecting it to be as cheap as a bigger city, but a little closer to what the rest of the country pays would be just great.
PS..sorry for hijacking…GO INDIAN CURRY!!!
I felt that way too until I started making my own dirty old home curries. It’s not the same, but it’s close enough for me.
I’m with you Dr…I lived in a god-forsaken northern albertan town for a while, and they had better and cheaper sushi than here! it was sort of neat actually; the all-you-can-eat place we used to go to had those little sushi boats taht went around and around, with the bar where people sat facing it. you just picked whatever struck your fancy off the boats as they went by.the point wasn’t gluttony, it was variety, and choice. at the prices here, I’m almost too scared to try something new- in case I am out 20 bucks for somethign I hate!now if it was an all-you-can-eat mcdonalds or other north american cuisine….yeah, that might be a problem. but I have no clue how you can founder yourself on sushi!
my apologies, i didn’t mean to imply that any of you were gluttonous pigs… i was speaking more in general terms about the whole concept of ‘all you can eat / supersize me’ style eating establishments, which tend to promote gluttony, imo. on the other hand, as hedgy points out, gorging oneself on sushi is somewhat easier said than done.and i agree with Drea, when it comes to sushi (or deliciously authentic south asian eateries; anything ethnic really), it’s a bit of a hit/miss wasteland here.and speaking of sushi, i’ve been to hamachi a few times, at both halifax locations, north & south end… i was NOT impressed. regrettably, it took me three visits before i finally accepted the fact that i’m not likely to find any GOOD sushi on the hrm peninsula. i lived in vancouver for 10yrs, so perhaps my sushi standards are ‘different’, although i am by no means an expert/snob on the matter either.
