A waterfront dog park here in HRM is a great place to go if you have a dog… usually. However, people need to reevaluate whether or not they really belong at the dog park.

My biggest pet peeve is little kids. I’m talking 3 year olds just wandering around the park because:

1. You don’t know every dog at the park, and while you would hope no one with an aggressive dog would bring their dog to a dog park, you just don’t know. So play it safe.
2. Even if they’re all friendly dogs, most of them still don’t enjoy a little toddler pulling their tail, lips and whatever else they can grab.
3. There are a lot of really big dogs that go to this park. When any of them start running with each other, everyone gets out of the way… except the little kids. Is it going to take a kid being run over by a Saint Bernard to make people realize that toddlers don’t belong there?

I get that lots of kids love dogs, and they should be able to interact with them. But the parents need to be supervising closely, and instructing their child on how to interact with dogs. I have no problem letting a kid pet my dog, but when I look over and the kid is tormenting him, that pisses me off. One day your kid is going to grab the wrong dog.

My other pet peeve at the park is cooped up dogs. You can tell right away that these dogs haven’t been outside ALL day, and this is probably the ONLY time they will be outside until they’re at the park again tomorrow. They can be spotted by seeing them drag their owner into the park, then once off leash running around in a panic jumping on every person and dog they can find. Also, the owner is usually lazy looking and often sit at the benches and smoke, while telling their dog to “go run around, go play, get out of here”.

I wish the dog park was full of more responsible owners. Don’t get me wrong, the regular group of people that go are great, as are their dogs. But as the weather gets nicer, I’m starting to notice more and more irresponsible owners just tossing their dog into the park so they don’t have to walk them, and god forbid get a little exercise.

I will now be going to the dog park far less, which is unfortunate because my dogs have made great dog-friends that they will miss. —Two Sad Dogs

  1. people are people o.p., whether they be sane or just fucking stupid. figure it out, and let us know what you get?

  2. “Is it going to take a kid being run over by a Saint Bernard to make people realize that toddlers don’t belong there?” –

I hate ta tell ya but when that happens they’ll close the dog park, not ban the kids!

    Personally, I much prefer dogs.

  3. If you take a kid to a dog park you should keep it on a leash. The park is for the dogs. Your kids can play in the street. (j/k)

  4. I can picture it.. some negligent or just plain stupid parent lets their dog pull the tail of a strange dog, and the dog nips the child in self-defense.. next thing you know, the parents are suing the dog owner and the poor dog is being put down. If only parents would.. you know, parent. Having a child is a choice and it’s the parents’ responsibility to look after their choice(s).
Petting a dog is one thing, when you ask for permission, but if you let your spawn yank the tail of a dog, or any other “harmful” behaviour, the child will get hurt and the parents can only blame themselves.

  5. My parents take their little dog to this park everyday. Their dog is cuter than anything and very friendly, but one day some a mother asked my father if her toddler son could see the dog. Dog goes up to toddler, and the little brat kicks him! Needless to say, dog is weary of strangers now, which I suppose isn’t an entirely bad thing.

  6. great, a cereal killer in training^^i’m surmising we’re speaking of seaview?

  7. we stopped going to that dog park for that very reason. Too many young kids, barely old enough to walk, and their irresponsible parents not watching them. There are hundreds of other parks out there, and most are covered in dog piss (and shit). Why take your little one to this park? or the parents that go there with infants swaddled to them… some dogs just can’t resist the temptation to jump up and see what’s going on there. Wake up HRM parents. Is it your right to take your kids to whatever park you want? Yes it is. Are dogs at this park supposed to be under control by their owners? Yes they are. But that is not the reality. Why risk your kids safety to prove a point. Go to another park. And BTW this is a really stupid place to take your kids and then lay down a picnic for them. Of course dogs are going to over and interfere, you morons.

  8. I have to get to a dog park soon. Great free entertainment. I love dogs but wouldn’t think about petting one without the owner’s consent.

  9. K, I kinda have a bit of a problem with this because of an experience I had last week at a certain off-leash area. (need ham?) My 3-year-old and a fair amount of other small kids were playing on the PLAYGROUND (yes, the off-leash-child-area) and out of nowhere, a bunch of dogs came around and one dog started fighting another dog right in front of the kids, terrifying them to tears. Were we neglecting the kids? No. They were on playground equipment for god sake. So when my child wants to run around crazy and be a kid at a playground that also happens to be off-leash, please, irresponsible dog owners, keep an eye on your dogs. I know this may be a different situation from what some of you are talking about, but I felt the need to point out another perspective of this. The responsibility lies on both parts.

  10. Listen, TSD, some of us work 8 hours a day. For $50/week, I take him to daycare on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But I can’t afford any more than that. So on non-daycare days I walk my dog at 7AM, and then do my best to take him to the dog park right after work. So yeah, he’s been in the house for 9 hours. And yeah, he’s a puppy so he’s a crazy beast after 9 hours at home. So get over the excited dogs at the dog park who haven’t been out all day. Better he lives with me than in the cage at the SPCA shelter.
