woah hyperbole. Say what you will about the EI proposals, but requiring people to accept a 20% pay cut does not imply that employers can undercut the legislated minimum wage. Get your facts straight.
You’re an idiot if you think employers can start paying less than min wage because of the EI reforms.
Employers are allowed to pay under the minimum wage for migrant workers, and for employees that are being newly trained. Once trained, that rule no longer applies, minimum wage must be paid.
The only thing that I forsee being a problem is that most of the seasonal work corresponds, most of the forestry, agricultural, construction, and for some of the fisheries operate during the spring, summer, and fall, leaving most seasonal workers out in the cold for the winter. That’s a lot of unemployed hitting the job market every year at the same time. When job markets become saturated with labour, wages go down, so expect people to clamoring over each other for minimum wage jobs.
People who work most of these seasonal jobs are not pulling in million dollar paycheques and living the high life, jetsetting around the world on the publics dime. For the most part it allows a demographic of people to eek by with the bare essentials for a couple months of each year during their off season. To think that people are getting rich by forging a living out of EI supplementation is ridiculous.

if you choose to fish or cut christmas trees that is your choice…. but just sitting on your ass letting the rest of us pay for your lifestyle for 6-8 months is not cool. Either find another seasonal job that you can work when you arnt doing your other job, or find something new to support yourself.
sorry i have no sympathy for seasonal workers, i have a friend who is a fisherman and ive had to listen to him for years laughing about how he sucks on the government teet for support when he makes enough in 6 months to last the whole year. He jokes about how the EI is his beer and party money and he spends his off time fishing (for fun) robbing native lobster traps and going 4x4ing. His story is more the norm than the exception i have found.

Personally, I really believe the jury isn’t out on the EI reforms yet. What if seasonal workers cannot find lower paying work out in the boonies. Are they supposed to move to take a minimum wage job? If so, farmers risk losing a large part of their labour force. This idea works better in urban centres than in rural Canada.
Seasonal workers should have been exempt from this legislation, what percentage of the workforce do they make up in this country? Not much.

Do most of you complete and utter retards not realize that ei is not funded with “public” tax money. It is funded directly from each canadian’s wages. It is our money and each Canadian who pays in should be able to collect if they need
