On behalf of the United States Olympic hockey teams, I would like to congratulate all you Canadians for royally spanking us in the women’s and men’s gold medal events. I’m so sick of our stupid, overblown ego it’s ridiculous. Thanks for putting us in our place. I’m completely serious. —Dino

You’re welcome. I cried a little at the gold medal ceremony for the men’s hockey… So many proud voices singing O Canada after they paraded the Golds past the US team. It got me all tingly.
i watched the ;ast 10 minutes of it, and thought to myself, thank fuck, it’s over now. we can all go back to being just dumb canucks again, eh’.
Great game and win no doubt, but I almost got as much satisfaction when Canada spanked Russia out of the tourney. Those arrogant bastards acted like they were going to win it all, and came out with nothing. So, who’s the best player in the world now Ovie?
I’m not a fan of the Olympics, I’m not a fan of hockey, and I’m not the most patriotic person either; but even I watched and enjoyed that game!
Give me a break. I spend 1/2 my time in the US and generally American are amazingly nice and wonderful people.
Canadians carry around this ridiculous smugness. Why? Canada’s economy is only about 30% larger than California, Canada environmental law is shit compared to the US, and we also invaded Afghanistan.
I will give you that we are better at hockey though….
And before anyone does the retarded metals per capita thing, Norway kicked every ones ass.
Tweev, this has nothing to do with which country is better economically or who invaded what other country. This is just about hockey.
Although I didn’t really see a stupid overblown ego coming from Americans at the Olympics, that’s just a stupid overblown stereotype. If anything, I’d say this “ego” is nothing more than high expectations for medals, and why not? The US is always the country to beat in the medal count.
The US has some great athletes and a great hockey team who surprised everyone. The US team was the underdog in this tournament. They played better than us in the third period and had a stellar goalie. We won by just one goal in overtime after the US tied it up in the last seconds of the third period (although they did have one one player up on us)… but still, just seconds! I wouldn’t call that a royal spanking. A royal spanking is winning 7-0. They gave us a run for our money and it could have gone either way.
Your welcome. As Obama said “Change.” Guess the American Olympic hockey team missed that one.
I wouldn’t say we royally spanked yo’ ass, Dino, in men’s hockey, anyway. Canada had to fight for that gold. The US put up a good game (tying the game with 23 seconds left is pretty epic — not as epic as crosby’s winning goal, but still). You really gotta give the US their due for their efforts in the game yesterday.
Poor fuckers looked like they lost their best friends yesterday when they got their silver medals. I actually felt bad for them.
the russians are really pissed off. pink slips all around
The Americans get shit on for being ignorant and arrogant, but in my travels, I have found far more ignorant and arrogant people than Americans. Australians, for example. People say Aussies are very similar to Canadians, but I’d say they’re more like Americans, though no Aussie would ever admit this since they “hate those bloody Yanks,” too. Canadians are a lot more reserved and passive while Aussies tend to be far more arrogant, brash, and rude. I still loved them though, they’re not afraid to speak their mind and are a good time for sure!
Remember that the United States has about 300 million people, so there will obviously be lots of bad along with lots of good ones there. Unfortunately, the bad ones tend to stick out more. And, whether the rest of the world likes it or not, they are the most powerful, prominent, and important nation on the face of the Earth. It’s probably hard not to let that get to your head sometimes!
Having been 10 rows up from the ice for the first game, I think the spanking has gone both ways:)
uh, PK… don’t feel bad for the millionaires only getting silver Olympic medals.
Somehow, I think they’ll live.
I must have been the only person not to have watched this game….
if even LS caught more than I did.
downloading it now though, will review the footage later.
I was too busy watching last weekend’s Elimination Chamber PPV
in which a CANADIAN WON GOLD! woot!
BREAK THE WALLS DOWN!
I’m happy the Olympics are over too, mainly because everybody around me was more interested in the stupid hockey games compared to the other sports. And when hockey wasn’t on, people jumped on curling bandwagons without watching or having an interest in the sport before. Commercial driven nationalism at its best is how I saw it.
Yesterday’s game was very well played and the US put up one hell of a fight, hence the sudden comeback with 0:25 left in regulation to force OT. Part of me cracked up the moment it happened as I could hear simultaneously every single groan/shriek across HRM at the exact moment. And although a good game, it’s not as big as game 6 or 7 of the Pens vs. Caps Stanley Cup 2009 semi finals.
I’m with you zZz. Next stop: WrestleMania 26 with it’s first ever all-Canadian main event as Edge meets former tag partner Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship. Toronto and Winnipeg go head to head!
I also enjoyed walloping the Russians. If the tables were turned in that game, they would have happily run up the score. We had 7 goals half way through and didn’t score another the rest of the game. The Americans were up 6-0 after the first period against the Finns and didn’t score again. I wonder how many salt mines are left in Siberia.
The Russians did poorly overall, not just in Hockey. The Russian Prime Minister told the coaches to either resign or be fired.
Off to the Gulag, I guess.
Pravda did a shit-piece on us. They were foolish enough to bitch as a prelude to hosting their own.
In Sochi right now, trees are blooming, the grass is green and there’s no snow. They’ve earned our nasty counter-points when the time is right.
You must mean this one Shrike:

The UK press did the same thing more or less, for what I would guess in preparation for the 2012 games. Although I did find a decent piece done the really only reputable UK paper, the Telegraph.
Thanks for that Dr. Fever. Hadn’t seen that particular one.
I couldn’t find the exact article but it has enough grist.

London has the next summer version. The other detractors.
The States have a proposal to build a new 1 billion dollar Embassy in London with a mote. To cut down on the bombings you see. By the next Olympics, it will cost a googolplex.
Yeah, and when I think of Summer I think of England. Christ, the only thing I see when I think of England is damp, sexually repressed Protestants. Interestingly enough, we were able to secure the Olympics without a visible automatic weapon (although I’m sure there were plenty in use), London’s gonna have it’s hands full with just the security issues with the Underground.
Usually, I’m pretty defensive of my Russian brethren, but man, sometimes they take it too far. They’ll get theirs… Or have they already? Pretty sad when you’re waxing poetic about the ol’ USSR days huh?
I’d hardly call it a royal spanking. In fact, either game could have easily have gone the other way. I think the Americans should actually be commended on their performances in the tournament (men more so than women… the women finished where they were supposed to)
