Looks like the public library has hit a new low. It’s not enough that it has become a daycare for lazy parents, it is now a religious institution as well. This past weekend one of Halifax’s fine book repositories was host to a religious gathering. Am I the only one who finds this offensive? A big part of the library system is to provide knowledge and encourage learning. Religion on the other hand promotes oppression and discourages free thought. The library should be trying to host more presentations based in science rather than old superstitions. —Another Reason Not To Use The Library

offensive?
you didn’t find it an amazing opportunity to debate with crazy people?
you’re no fun.
So what you’re saying is that the library should promote free thought by excluding books based on content? Oh, and also the people that read them?
hmmmm….. that doesn’t quite sound like free thought….
Wow, you are a hard-core ideologue, aren’t you. The root word of ideologue being idiot. The library is for ALL. Ever check out some of the radical lefty jackasses who hold their meetings at North Branch. Real respect for differing ideas there, right? Look into a mirror, Spanky. You’re no different from that which you claim to despise.
I find your reaction to the situation offensive. It’s a common space that they obviously needed to host their gathering. Would you rather them have held it at your local watering hole on a Friday night?
Were you forced to sit and listen? Did they try to convert you? They obviously aren’t there all the time. What was so offensive about their religion anyway? Were they Christian, or something as equally offensive?
“You’re no different from that which you claim to despise.”
YUP.
You said it, Mr. Ivanovich.
What a negative bunch of whiners here this morning. In my opinion the Library has the word ‘Public’ in front of it, does it not? Ok. That means everyone, children, and christians alike. Your kind of people always make me laugh: You get all bent out of shape about the mention of God but if you were in a plane crash you would be the first one to elicit His help. Nothing wrong with using the PUBLIC library for religious purposes. If you don’t want to join in don’t, but don’t try to belittle those who do. Thank God we serve a merciful God. Someday you just might wish you hadn’t spoken out of turn.
what? because the ‘merciful’ god will turn him into a pillar of fire? or send a herd of swine to tear him to pieces? maybe send some ruffians to rape his wife and daughter? OP is a dink, yes, for being a hypocrite. YOU on the other hand, are the worst example of christian. you know why? because you set a bad example. you actually turn possible converts away by your petty nastiness. you are the antithesis of christianity. you are supposed to lead people to christ by example, not a cattle prod. you are supposed to be living testimony. your sin is major, because you are supposed to be christ’s representative on earth, to be a shining beacon of what a life following christ can be. not to make other souls go ‘if that’s what christians are, i don’t want any part of it’. and if i were you, cookie, i wouldn’t be expecting pearly gates at the end of my time. or a welcome through them. you are actually working for the other side.
OB. Just. Don’t. Go.
As long as they are keeping quiet and following the rules of the liberry, they can read & study what they like! Isn’t telling people what they can and cannot read in a library a little….erm…oppressive??
OB, if you want to see “presentations based on science rather than old superstitions,” fucking organize one yourself! That’s one great feature of the library — it serves as a meeting place for community groups, including any that you want to set up! Their rates are reasonable.
I think you’ve made a really dumb misunderstanding somewhere, because I highly doubt the librarians themselves held a religious service.
And they do teach science and reading to children:

I’m one of the library folk around town, and I’m told the secret library religion is Pastafarianism.
Fucking, lying Pastafarians…going around telling everyone about their stupid flying spagetti monster… EVERYONE knows the Manicotti monster is the one true all powerful , invisible, unfindable unanswering ,unprovable power in the Universe …sheeesh but people are dumb
~;p
Hey there Good Dog Molly? Judge not lest thou be judged!!!! Anger rests in the bosom of fools. Simmer down honey and chose your own adventure!
wogdog, don’t expect any points for parroting a couple of verses. read the darn thing, esp the new testament. has it not occurred to you that your angry, swearing comments in other posts are also visible? instead of ranting in your own anger, perhaps you could read about turning the other cheek and casting the first stone and beams in one’s eye. because you claim to be a christian. piffle dearie. you are not even close.
Wogdog should listen to Good Dog.
GDM has your name! She has your number!
Typical lefty crap. You’re free to say whatever you want as long as you agree with me. It is a PUBLIC library which means the PUBLIC whether religious, Conspiracy Theorists, Political parties or anyone else, whether you agree with them or not have the right to use or rent the space, just like anyone else.
and the lord said onto them, behold the internet cometh, and take away the need for those places of books and other idiotic things. and the people saw that this was good, and they amassed to their computers saying hail to thee, william gates.
I wonder if people would be as willing to have Satan Worshippers meet in our public libraries?
I agree it is a public space but where do you draw the line?
Although there is a difference between using a public room as a ‘house of worship’ and holding a Women’s Auxiliary meeting
Ah, until you have a slice of the Women’s Auxiliary Strawberry-Rhubarb pie. It’s like heaven!
Wait the libaray babysits for free? Wish I knew about that when my little one was still on the bottle and waking up frequently through the night 🙂
Woggers, forget about expressing any sort of Christian values on this board lest you be labelled a hypocrite for not being perfect.
“As for God, his way is perfect. The word of Yahweh is tested. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.”
Samuel 22 Verses #: 31
are those like *family values*?
no, i did not label wog a hypocrite, that word was reserved for the intolerant ass OB. i labeled wog a bad example of christianity because of his/her repeated foulness, threats using god as her weapon and holier than thou nastiness. an actual follower of christ would not be capering around like a gibbering fool shrieking ‘nyah nyah god’s gonna get ya’ in public. of course humans could not be ‘perfect’ , but neither do i believe it’s ok to sin up a storm and then repent (expecting full forgiveness) on one’s deathbed.
Leave the religious folk alone. If people want to teach or learn about religion, so what! The library is a learning institution.
That was a cheap shot at Lefties there Bro Tim, any political persuasion can be intolerant, there’s no evidence at OP is working on the smart side.
I get a kick out of woggie. She reminds me, quite ironically, of a yappy little dog.
Bro Tim was spot on. Leftie’s obeisance to that secular god called “Diversity” tends to be inversely proportionate to how far it actually diverges from their own cant.
Being less intelligent, Conservatives tend to be more honest about our visceral prejudices, if only because we lack the higher brain function to rationalize them>; )*
*There’s that old sarcasm alert again.
