$ 1400.00 for a ‘beautiful’ basement apartment? Seriously? It’s dark, moldy and cold, and has awkward lay out. I don’t care if you put granite countertops in the cramped kitchenette–it’s NOT an ‘executive’ residence–it’s a freakin basement!
Halifax Landlords need to check their greed with a wakeup call. Otherwise known as rent control. Just because you went into debt for an income property does not mean you are entitled to profit right away. If renters could afford to pay for the mortgage, maintenance costs, property tax, and a nice monthly profit for you on top of it all–they would buy their own house. Landlords –you will make a profit off of your investment over time, once you have reinvested rental fees and your own hard earned cash to pay off the mortgage and the value for the property has gone up. If you can’t afford to buy the property outright it’s a long term investment that will eventually pay back. Stop trying to get instant pay back from renters—these Toronto rates don’t line up with Nova Scotian salaries and wages. —Everyone’s A Hustler

  1. Hah, that’s awesome. Almost 20 years ago my girlfriend and I looked at a ‘basement apartment’ in some jitbags house. It was just presswood and concrete floors. Great for kidnap victims but no so much for a young couple trying to get things going. I think he wanted 800 for that shithole. Glad to hear nothing has changed. Well, not really glad.

  2. haha what a joke.. Some fool WILL pay this though. They are preying on the people who come from places like San Francisco and think 1400 bucks is cheap as hell and can’t believe their dumb, blind luck.

  3. we don’t have rent controls, to my knowledge, we’ve never had them in halifax

  4. First rule of renting in Halifax – don’t rent on peninsula Halifax. Some of these thieving clowns would sell you a whoopee cushion as a priceless antique methane simulator.

  5. Just once I’d like to ask such landlords: ‘Do I look like a fucking rube to you??’ before snorting and walking out.

  6. Then go sign a mortgage or find some room mates. The landlord could give a crap about Nova Scotian salaries and wages. Not their problem. He’s trying to get ahead just like you are.

  7. I’m afraid I own my shack, Bro Tim, right here in lovely downtown Hillbilly Hollow across the road from a NSLC outlet – why would I ever move to town?

  8. Good one, Enoch. Lets see if you can explain that without your usual diatribe about “Tiny Tim Trudeau” or the N-Dippers, cause we all know it’s their fault, somehow.

  9. Enoch, it’s not really the same argument at all. Car owners don’t rent out a seat in their car to bus riders for $400 a month. Car owners don’t have anything at all with people riding the bus. The cost of a car and the price of fuel are more likely to be holding back most bus riders from car ownership.

As opposed to trying to saddle the HarperCons with the blame for every global, national and municipal ill?

Don’t misinterpret me Shitty; I am in no way calling you out on your cherished personal prejudices. I’m just wondering why you seem to think of them as a privilege to which you, and you alone, are entitled.

  11. Eff that… you must be looking downtown.
I think I may even know the actual place as every time I passed by there it had a ‘for rent’ sign up, trying to get some poor schmuck to fork out a fortune for a dungeon which (almost 100% guaranteed) would have ants in the summer.

eff that, look farther away and invest in a bus pass…

  12. I don’t saddle them with EVERY national ill, and certainly not every global or municipal ill. Its unfortunate that the Conservatives had to swallow the Alliance (bunch of racist, elitist, Christian Nationalists) in order to secure an electable government, it really destroys any credibility they ever had.

As far as the Liberals go, they handed the Conservatives a surplus government, sponsorship or no sponsorship. The conservatives whittled that down to nothing, promising to reform the senate (instead he jams the senate full of conservative patronage appointees and adds some seats to “balance regional representation” aka:give more power to the west and Ontario) reign in spending, shrink government, and institute accountability. So far they are batting a zero on their election promises. Not only that, they increased spending, grew the government, and their cabinet/senate appointees are rife with ethics/accountability issues and scandal, yet somehow they get a free pass in the minds of supporters.

His “tough on crime” stance is going to bankrupt what’s left of this beautiful country, following a system that has failed miserably in the States. He/they continuously attack our charter rights for “the greater good”, has been instituting foreign worker wage reductions while attacking the EI system, citing “a culture of laziness” as the reason people in rural farming/fishing areas only have seasonal employment. He has also thrown in reductions in environmental regulation/legislation surrounding some of our most pristine native hunting and fishing grounds, not to mention the lack of accoutability for offshore oil/natural gas drilling, leaving Canada completely on the hook for the cleanup.

Are you telling me that Stephen Harper and his Conservative cronies are good for this country? You have got to be kidding me, i would rather see 100 years of Liberal/NDP dictatorship the another year of these piranhas. If I had anything to say about it, I would chop off his head for treason.

As far as my opinion or anyone else’s, I, as well as they, are entitled to it. Neither you or Enoch (who in this case made a ridiculous comparison) should act all butthurt because I poke fun of your, IMO, ridiculous political affiliations. Do I believe that one of the other leaders/parties are better for the country I love? I have to, or I may as well just leave!!!!

  13. I agree reg, and I will be moving back as soon as I can get a good job that doesn’t pay 7/hr less than I’m making here, for the same job.

  14. I love how OB is an expert on real estate investment, but obviously doesn’t own any property (implied by their bitch about this apartment).

I’m actually saving to buy a house with an income suite. I don’t expect to make a PROFIT on my income suite, but when I move out and into my second property, I do expect the two units I’m going to rent out to pay the mortgage and taxes on the property. If you’re renting out an entire property and still paying money out of pocket, you’re not doing it right and should just sell.

I also plan on one fuck of a down payment, so I don’t expect to mortgage the property out the ass.

Property investment should be at least about recouping costs.

  15. Reg: I lived in the valley for 15 years. I didn’t like the commute, and the job opportunities in the valley for my field of work is pretty well non existant, so I would HAVE to commute into the city.

I’d rather live in HRM and pay a bit more than spend my life on the 101.

  16. IT cut my earnings to live in the country, but my expenses went down even more …property tax went from over 2 grand that I paid in the city 11 years ago to about 400 I’ll pay out here this year , water/sewage bill went to the electric cost for the pump to come on & the odd liter of bleach to shock my well. & it was 345.00 last year to pump out my septic system after 10 years …so 35 bucks a year. & I can have chickens & cats …with no one freaking out … & that’s priceless ~:)

  17. I have some friends who would probably be very interested in Cumberbatch/Quinto slashfic…
