Why with all these radio stations do we still have shit on the radio. It was almost better before all these new stations came along. Now we have all these choices but its still the same repetitive shit.

As if the music wasn’t bad enough…the so callled morning shows are enough to make me puke. Thank the goddess for my CD player. That and the fact you can’t actually ‘weld’ your radio dial to just 1 station.
Halifax radio is so bad it’s ridiculous. Aside from the crap played on The Bounce and slightly less odoriferous but still crappy Z103, you have the headbanging Q (“all Nickelback, all the time!”) with their disgustingly obscene morning show crew, the Britney-boppers on C100, and the schizoid Kool-FM that is all over the map format-wise. So you go for news, but 95.7 has 2 talk shows most of the day that nobody calls into because nobody can stand to listen to the hosts, and when they do give you news it is in little repetitive 10-minute snippets. It’s all crap.
You guys gotta get satellite radio. I honestly don’t know how people can stand drive-time radio. I’d rather listen to the heater fan than any of that dribble.
Yeah Cranky, I love paying for something that I can get for free. That’s like paying for a bottle of water, idiot. We’ve got it good in Halifax, given that we’ve got a population less than 500 K and much smaller advertising market than bigger cities and don’t warrant having Kim Mitchell doing the 3-6 time slot. We have multiple formats and if you don’t like the hosts, don’t pay attention to them. Could be worse… we could be like Fredericton, the best they have is CBC Radio One. The news book ended by classical music? Good night….
I remember when the wave of new radio stations started up a couple years ago… oh, great variety! Oh cool, what’s this HalFM all about? Oh, what the fuck this is Q104… not it’s not…. shit it is. How about Z103? Oh sweet another C100.
FUCK. How can we have so many same stations!? Can we get a rock station that plays NEW stuff… maybe 90s and up? Fuck Q104 the Home of RocknROll (wait… the home of Nickelback)

ME: Try to get excited for something that’s not dead. You would praise fuckin Nickelback if they put out an album full of recordings of them sitting on the crapper.
Dr.Fever, anybody who has satellite radio knows exactly what they’re paying for, or what they’re not paying for as the case may be.
You probably don’t have cable either, eh? Three stations is plenty if they’re free. Ha ha.
Anybody who whines about the programming of any of these stations should go and program for the day at any of these stations. It’s tough job, especially when you need to take in consideration that you need to have 40% Canadian programming (which is the reason why those douchebags Nickleback get so much airtime) and worry about advertising, etc. Not to mention that some of these stations contribute time to the local music scene…
Perhaps you work in the radio industry and that’s why you’re so defensive.
Since I posted the original comment I feel it necessary to “whine” some more. I too understand how the industry works because first off im not a tool and I wouldnt comment on something I know nothing about and second I actually have a friend who works in the industry.
I understand that 40% of the music must be Canadian; I too think it’s great that we are supporting local artists. But there are many OTHER CANADIAN artists in many different genres that never or hardly receive any air time on any station. I ALSO know that you can only play the same song a certain number of times in a 24 hour period. These stations must be right on that cusp with the air time of some of these songs. Even if a song is requested 18 times a day must we play that song 18 times a day?
You stated that we are “lucky” we have so many stations for such a small population and I completely agree but by you saying this it simply proves my point further, that with all these choices must I listen to Britney Spears, and Lady GAGA, over and over and over again. These are not Canadian artists last time I checked they are the over played pop genre. The truly sad thing is I enjoy some pop but a song loses its “magic” so to speak when you hear it 18 times a day, or better yet you change station and YES whats this its playing the same fucking song as the other station.
I don’t think I should have to go out and get satellite radio when I have all of these stations to choose from. All I ask is for more VARIETY isn’t that what every true music lover wants? Isn’t that what you want?

I did a little work for the local university radio station, yes. As I mentioned, it’s tough to keep a good balance of music that brings listeners to the station. If you don’t like what’s played, turn it the fuck off. You’re in the minority when it comes to “music taste”. Radio stations are very sensitive when it comes to listenership, if they notice a drop in ratings they change format pretty quickly (Q104 has changed formats at least 5 or 6 times over 25 years, classic rock to current rock and back again, same goes for C100) You’ve obviously never been outside of Halifax; radio in general is pretty well the same across the board. Oh, and by the way, just a point that I just thought of… You should think first before making an absolutely ridiculous joke. You ruined what was a perfectly valid argument.
I’m listening to Sirius Sat Radio right now, and can’t go down the road 10 minutes without taking it with me on the road. I don’t pay to listen to Sirius, I pay to not listen to the awful Halifax radio stations. Q104 and C100 make me want to hang myself. I understand we need 40% Canadian (the only reason Chad Krogger isn’t giving 50 dollar rub and tugs) but repetitive shit is shit even when it’s free. Besides most of the personalities on these stations do absolutely nothing to make me want to listen. I don’t want to hear about Canadian Idol, Survivor, how great their station is, or what concert your station is promoting, entertain me with some originality.

Except upon closer inspection I realize its a gunni pig now. Radio is not the same across the board, the Radio in Vancouver, NYC, and other larger cities in the US is amazing but again that has everything to do with the population like you mentioned. I could listen to my MP3 But I would like to support these stations by listening, why must they make it so hard to do so.

perhaps the only reason I still enjoy Nickelback is because I walk to work and don’t ever turn the radio on when I travel via car. I don’t get the latest and greatest tunes until it’s proven itself and actually gets recommended to me by someone or I hear it whilst shopping. Personally, I prefer to listen to music I actually like all the time. Life’s too short to waste on pussy-cat doll/britney spears karaoke and the gansta’s with their ho’s. Put on a little Slash’s Snake Pit and cruise in style.
A nice way to get variety is to go to Taz Records, they have a two dollar tape room – go buy some random tapes – cheaper than satellite radio! Haha, with that being said though – satellite radio is worth the money for the fact that you dont have to listen to ads all day. Maybe forty percent of the music is Canadian, but it seems to me that forty percent of air time is advertising.
Theres always CBC Radio 2 ;). No joke though – its nice.
