In the crisply painted, freshly floored new home for the Eyelevel Gallery (one block north of its old location) is a huge projection screen showing a four-minute looping video of a woman falling from the sky. The reason we know she’s a woman isn’t because we can see her face—that’s covered by her long black […]

Walk a Mile captures Kenya
Mary Jefferson’s travels in Kenya weren’t just the trip of a lifetime, but the inspiration for this powerful collection of portraits that hang in the north end’s newest gallery space, 2053. The Halifax photographer ventured to Africa in 2007 and travelled a 2,000 kilometre loop that began in Nairobi and took her through many memorable […]
Jeremy Fisher’s Flood
Jeremy Fisher is a from-the-ground-up kind of guy. His work as a musician and artist is infused with a DIY style. But with his newest release, Fisher’s foundation was a drum machine. Taking hints from Jeff Lynne’s work with the Travelling Wilburys and, surprisingly, Phil Collins, Fisher demo’d the album using a drum machine, a […]
Ready to Ramble
Of course a crew of alt-country, bluegrassers would be driving across the country in Matt Minglewood’s old van.”It’s quite a cool van. It’s a 15 passenger, with customized interior…oak panelling on the ceiling, very retro,” boasts Andrew Sneddon of the Ramblers’ sweet find. There’ll be a major bluegrass void in Halifax this spring as the […]
Duzheknew heads South by Southwest, and then some
Duzheknew is taking off for a little bit. Next month they’ll embark on a tour that’ll cover major ground, and oh yeah, they’ll join Team Halifax at that little ditty South by Southwest in Austin. They’re pumped to see friends from other attending bands like Braids, Gobble Gobble and Diamond Rings, but Duzheknew’s Adam O’Reilly […]
The only thing better than live music, is free live music
[image-1] Last night kicked off the slew of great, and may I add free, Canada Games concerts. I’ve seen my share of Grand Parade shows, but hadn’t been to one since I think the Junos, where I was likely also sardined to see Joel. And last night, sardined we were once again, which is great. Thousands showed up, sang along and bobbed in unison. Downtown was spirited and it was really lovely to see so many people on the streets. Mayor Kelly did his usual candy hand-out, there was free cider, Darrell Dexter showed of his “singing” chops and even
Everybody dance now
Shine up them dancin’ shoes, folks. Word around the campfire is there’s going to be a flash mob tonight at the Joel Plaskett show at Celebration Square. A video of the choreography for Plaskett’s “Nowhere With You” has been circulating the interwebs for a few days, giving you dancing machines the chance to take part. […]
Marine Dreams awakens in Sackville
Thanks to a one-way ticket to Moncton, compliments of Steve Lambke, Ian Kehoe (formerly of adored rockers Attack in Black) now calls indie music pocket Sackville, New Brunswick, his home. It was the end result of hopping aboard a tour with Baby Eagle to play some bass, and realizing they had something good going on. […]
Robin Peck steps up to the Podium
While New Brunswick-based sculptor Robin Peck prefers to work with plaster, he’s been experimenting with Plexiglass over the years. And while at first glance these transparent pieces seem simple and minimalist, observing them closely can do a number on your head. “I like the fact that it’s almost not there and it’s very difficult to […]
How sweet it is
Julia Feltham is truly a troubadour. She’s been hard at work putting her poetic genius, soothing vocals and big sexy cello on an album for you, but here’s an opportunity to get a sample of what’s to come. A night so sweet, it’ll leave you wanting more. Friday, Feb 11, The Company House, 2202 Gottingen […]
Oh, Canada Games
Halifax’s Jordan Croucher (now better known as JRDN) has been popping up on radios across Canada, owning Much Music and just finished a national tour with Danny Fernandez. But you might not have known he was a Canada Games athlete once too (JRDN shared his basketball skills with team Nova Scotia for summer games in […]
Ryan MacGrath wants to be your Valentine’s date
Lately, Ryan MacGrath has been playing his big, beautifully arranged songs on his own most of the time, trading dramatic instrumentation for a more intimate, stripped down sound. So playing a show with his full band is a Valentine’s treat for the ECMA nominated artist. “I’m so big on layers and little nuances in my […]
