Crystal Castles are coming

Busy music news week here in Olde Hallyfucks! The latest announcement comes to me via Facebook, where 122+ hip kids have already clicked “Attending” to the Crystal Castles April 1, 2011 show at the Halifax Forum. Ah, “Air War” – I remember the first time we met. You sounded like a bunch of broken computer […]

Rock Garden Closes

After 5 years of business, the Rock Garden jam space is now permanently closed. We wish owner/operator Rob MacArthur the best of luck with his endeavors and echo many in the Halifax music scene in wishing him wholehearted thanks for his work, time and invaluable contributions to the space over the past few years. We […]

PIG NO MORE

“what’s kept you together all these years?” “stonehenge” For the past three years, PIG has been a lynchpin in Truro’s burgeoning music scene. The band, who sort of defy description—-Weird Canada calls them “adjective-punk,” which works for me—-experiment with drone and noise in a purely uncalculated and intuitive way. This becomes twice as scary when you realize most of them are just barely out of high school. When we heard the band was finished, we were bummed, but we also know that their sound and attitude will live on in other realms. We emailed Tyler Fleck, who confirms: “I think

Another Band Bites the Dust

Today the Dal Gazette reported that the much-loved guitar-and-drums duo The Superfantastics have broken up. The story, which you can read here, reports that singer/guitarist Matt MacDonald and singer/drummer Stephanie Clattenburg just weren’t feeling it anymore. “We’re still friends,” says Clattenburg. The duo’s final show is Saturday November 6th at the Seahorse with the Meligrove Band and Ruby Coast.

Antichrist

By now, it’s highly likely that you’ve had at least one aspect of Lars Von Trier’s twisted parable Antichrist spoiled for you. And it’s true: the film’s moments of explicit sex, violence and absurdity (my favourite is the rotting, talking fox) could take up hours of discussion on their own. Still, a year after I […]

Step Up for Stepping Stone

Speaking to Stepping Stone director Rene Ross the other day, I was pretty surprised to learn that the organization (which offers support and outreach to sex workers and former sex workers) has never had a fundraiser before. “We try to only ask for donations when we really need it,” Ross explains. With cutbacks and a […]

BJ Snowden Returns

Honorary Maritimer, outsider music hero and all-around delightful human being BJ Snowden is coming to Halifax on November 15 to play a show at Gus’ Pub. If you saw her this summer at Sappyfest or at the Company House, then you know that this woman is not to be missed. Two of my friends ate […]

AUGHGHGHGHHGHGHGHGHGHSDHFH Ever watchful sister-in-music Sue Carter Flinn pointed out just now that Heart has Halifax listed as one of the dates on their Canadian tour. The date is February 3 at the Metro Center. Tickets go on sale this Friday and OH MY GOD IT’S HEART AND THEY’RE COMING HERE AND I AM GOING TO […]

The Return of Monotonix

photo stolen from digbeth.org I know it’s barely Halloween but there’s an early Christmas prezzie on the horizon for all you fans of Israeli stoner/freak-rock. The terrors from Tel Aviv, Monotonix, will be returning to Halifax on December 12th to the Seahorse to presumably blow your faces off with their hairy-chested little antics. Fun to […]

TONIGHT: Nick Cave, MC5 and Marilyn Manson

I don’t think this photo is sexy in the least. KNUCKLE BITE! The Fantods are doing a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds tribute this Thursday at Gus’ (along with The Grass as the MC5 and Quiet Parade doing Marilyn Manson.) Nick Cave in any incarnation is sort of like catnip for me—-he makes me feel wild and roll around a lot on the floor, mewling. I will be there, up front, singing with full-throated and embarrassing passion. You should be too.
