Wanted: old show posters

A new group popped up on Facebook this week with a purpose that I can definitely get behind: “Nova Scotia Gig Posters” creator Cara MacDonald seeks to collect all your old gig posters and put them online in a searchable archive. Holy balls that’s awesome. 300 posters have already been sent her way, and on the group’s wall you can get a tantalizing peek at the first few scanned images, including posters from the 1998 Misfits show at Olympic Gardens and an extremely old-looking “Dr. Skankworthy” poster from the Double Deuce. Check out the group and send your scanned

Fall into Winter

Remember Fall Horsie? That sweet, dreamy ensemble led by Halifax-bred, Montreal-based musician Justin Karas? Remember their last album, Devil(e)durge, and how it was the prettiest album about Satan that you’d ever heard? Well, like most good things, Fall Horsie has adapted and evolved into a new ensemble called O’ The Fool. In an email, Karas […]

The Nymphets’ Last Show in Halifax

facelove The Nymphets, who are so cute, are playing for the last time (for a long time) at Reflections’ $Rockin4Dollar$ Monday night. They are moving to Sweden fairly soon and probably will not be back for awhile. Come down and give them all your big sloppy goodbye love. This is also the last night that baked goods will be for sale as part of the IWK Crafts for Kids campaign. Also, The Deadly Hearts will be headlining – a group of scrubbed young men who cover Eddie Cochran and lots of fun romantic 50’s-type rock songs that you will like.Last but

Rock of Ages

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the Rock Garden jam space closing its doors permanently, much to the chagrin of many in the Halifax music community. Well, good news, everyone – a new practice space is being put together in the same Hunter Street location. The other day I got ahold of Pete Green, who will be running the spot along with his partner, Sande Jordan. Although details are still rough, he says the new place—-tentatively dubbed Rockopolis Rehearsal Studios—-will feature four equipped rooms to be rented hourly, while the other four rooms will be rented on a

Dickin’ Around at the Oasis

Those still reeling from the explosive Kylesa show at Pop Explosion (namely, me) might get a kick out of the Johnny Dick Project, who — based on a cursory Myspace spin — create a similar atmosphere of melodic and pervasive doom. We particularly like Heather Doran’s powerful vocals, which give us a hint of Skunk […]
