While completing their masters of fine art at NSCAD in 2010 Amélie Proulx and Barbara Sutherland realized that although their techniques were very different, their research interests were well-matched. The two put their heads together and with themes of books, language and translation in mind they proposed what is now Sub Rosa. “At the time we’d both been interested in the writing of Susan Stewart,” says Sutherland. “In her book On Longing she talks about a book being a metaphor of containment, of interiority and exteriority…of taking things apart and putting them back together.” The result is a detailed and delicate looking series of works that explores concealing, revealing, folding and unfolding through porcelain, video, felt work and metal. Go ahead, get lost in translation.
