As first impressions go, Anne Bastedo has a good one, warmly welcoming me to Viewpoint Gallery and explaining the various ongoing exhibits. It’s a brightness that’s easily reflected in her photography, most recently with First Impressions—Central American Light—photographic evidence of her travels through five countries and arranged by her special eye for pattern and light. From a tree’s natural purples and greens in “Pastel Bark” to the primary colours of houses and churches, or everyday objects like the furniture in “3 Chairs and a Boy,” Bastedo’s photographs paint a picture of a different world—one of bright moments and cheerful people—dosing me with a burning sense of hot weather that’s veritably warming from the inside out. I wouldn’t be surprised if many a flight gets booked after viewing this exhibit.
