Halifax seeks LGBTQ artist
Redesigning the North Park intersection is messy business, but the city is trying to make sure that at the end of it all there’s some nice art to show for it—sandblasted into the concrete, forever! Right now Halifax is seeking an artist or arts facilitator for one of three planned entrance plazas on the Halifax […]
Halifax wants you on its new arts advisory committee.
[Image-1] If the last few weeks of budget protests have shown anything, it’s that this town has some powerful advocates for the arts. Which is great, since Halifax is looking for citizens to participate on the newly-formed ArtsHalifax advisory committee. Approved at council’s May 12 meeting, ArtsHalifax will be composed of eight artistic minds appointed […]
Lampposts on a bender
There’s rowdy behavior on Halifax’s waterfront boardwalk, but it’s not the usual culprits. Artists Chris Hanson and Hendrika Sonnenberg have installed three disorderly, personified streetlamps on South Battery Pier, near Bishop’s Landing. The installations—”Fountain” and the diptych “Got Drunk, Fell Down”—are part of a series entitled The Way Things Are. They are nakedly honest portraits […]
Bridge Terminal: Where’s the public art?
Update, October 12: City spokesperson Tiffany Chase emails to say that the city is not hiring a consultant to figure out how the public art policy applies to the Bridge Terminal, but rather “scoping out the project internally.” After that, an request for proposals will be issued. Original article: In 2008, Halifax council adopted a […]
Jordi Bonet Explosion memorial is in pieces
[image-1] In 1966, a sculpture created by renowned Canadian artist Jordi Bonet was placed at the North Memorial Library. The statue was a tribute to those who died in the Halifax Explosion. But in 2005 the city deemed the statue a “public safety risk,” and it was taken apart and stored; the statue then sustained further damage and some parts went missing, including a cast bronze doll that represents the child victims of The Explosion. Recently, The Halifax Explosion Memorial Sculpture Committee has revived its interest in the sculpture. “Ideally, the remaining pieces must be gathered in one place, inventoried,
Barrington Street moves farther from heaven
It seems that even the celestial beings are now abandoning sad old Barrington Street. About six months ago, a large, raw plywood door appeared on the stone wall outside of Grand Parade, in front of the bus stop. Open the latch and there was a wooden triptych of a saint, custom-sized for the space. On […]
Grand Parade ready to remember
The cenotaph at Grand Parade should be ready in time for Remembrance Day, says city spokesperson Shaune MacKinlay. “But it’s up to the veterans’ group if they are going to have their ceremony,” says MacKinlay. “They’ll inspect it and make a decision in a few days.” During a routine maintenance of the structure this summer, […]
Best Place Crying Out for Public Art
It was recently announced that Oklahoma City will be receiving a bronze statue of Angelina Jolie, nude, breastfeeding her twins, as sculpted by Daniel Edwards. You know, we’re not suggesting something similar for Halifax, but wouldn’t it be awesome? The fact of the matter is that this town is in dire need of public art, […]
Sandler’s water works
If you happen to drive by Burnside in the next couple of days, stop at Velocity Machining and Welding (19 Pettipas) to see sculptor Ilan Sandler‘s newest piece, “The Vessel,” a 5.7-metre-tall, stainless-steel water pitcher. Sandler and Velocity are old co-conspirators; you may remember Sandler’s giant steel book with the float-away pages, which is now […]
