Canada is not having just one election on October 21. We’re having 338 elections. In order to decipher all the bullshit coming at you this election season you need to: first, understand how your vote elects a parliament; second, know how that parliament becomes government and; third, make a stiff drink or cry or both. […]

Pushing beyond the glass ceilings of BIPOC political representation
I was asked to reflect on the lack of people of colour running in the four federal ridings in Halifax Regional Municipality. This statistic is so unsurprising—I didn’t think it was worth writing about—but I do think it’s an important statistic to know, so here it is: There are no people of colour running for […]
Suzuki says: ‘Vote for climate solutions’
Although the only discussion now should be about solutions and how to implement them quickly, some people in and out of the political sphere still refuse to accept the massive amounts of evidence for human-caused global heating and the need to address it. Politicians are finally talking about climate change. How could they not? In […]
Premiere: Loveland’s new video “Aloe Hotel”
Only at The Coast: Halifax’s sexiest soul-funk band Loveland just released a new video for “Aloe Hotel,” a single from the nine-track record of the same name. Directed and edited by Brian Askew (The Everywheres), the video features Loveland at an actual Aloe Hotel: shades of green from kiwi, apple, fern, pine to pistachio, lime and aloe. There’s lots […]
Foxy Moon is feelin’ green
“I’ve always been environmentally-minded, but I’ve chosen two careers in my life that have been pretty bad for the environment,” says Foxy Moon Hair Gallery’s (2725 Agricola Street) owner Evyeneia Dexter. Needless to say when she found out that Green Circle Salons was heading this way, she jumped on the opportunity to team up. The […]
Drink to that
“You’re passionate about your work, you truly believe in it, and it’s a very long uphill battle,” says Courtney Morrison, the 27-year-old who plans to bring a little more attention to Green Drinks. “It’s frustrating and exhausting.” Morrison attributes this exhaustion to “activist burnout”—a considerable concern among people working within the environmental sector. She says […]
Ka-blam! It’s the Cuppow
The Mason jar has made a comeback. Once a vessel for your grannie’s jams, it’s become a staple for the thrifty hipster. This trendy drink accessory is cheap, durable and made of heat-resistant glass. There’s only one real flaw, the jars aren’t great for spill-free drinking on the go. Enter the Cuppow—a lid adaptor that […]
P’lovers gets a new nest
The environmental store P’lovers has a big day coming up this week. Liz Crocker and Ann Caverzan opened the store in 1992, and to celebrate the 20-year anniversary, they are making changes. “Our store will be moving to the Trillium Building, mostly because there’s more space and street frontage,” says Crocker. “Several other local businesses […]
Canada will fail to meet climate change goals
[image-1] The graph above comes from a page quietly posted on Environment Canada’s website last week, with the page titled “Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Target and Emissions Projections.” The graph shows the amount, in megatonnes (millions of tonnes), of greenhouse gases emitted by the entire country each year between 1990 and 2010, with projections forward to 2020. There’s a small attempt to spin the real situation—it throws in the red herring of China’s GHG emissions (a real concern, but not relevant to this country meeting its own GHG goals), and this bit of misdirection: Added together, all these existing government actions
Best Eco-conscious Store
So, you wanna buy a gift for your special someone over the holidays and you’re concerned about the environment. How about fair trade Christmas ornaments from Peru? P’lovers has gourds, silk elephants and cotton sheep. How about Canadian-made clothing? Or something from the popular Green Pan line? Or maybe you need to pick up some […]
Local greens go Copenhagen or bust
“We’re hoping to send the politicians a message,” sayJannelle Frail, explaining this weekend’s environmental gathering on the Common. Frail is an organizer with the local branch of 350.org, an international group drawing attention to the need for strong results from the UN’s Climate Change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, this December; “350” refers to the maximum […]
Quinpool Road Cruise’s green shift
The chrome-laden behemoths of the golden age of automobiles always make for impressive viewing. This year you can look into the future as well as basking in nostalgia at the Quinpool road cruise, known as the Show and Shine, taking place this Sunday, July 19. The Quinpool Road Mainstreet District Association is working with CrestHalifax.org […]
