Welcome to Extreme Makeover: Cafe Edition, in which inspiring entrepreneur Michelle Strum’s cafe and hostel Alteregos (2193 Gottingen Street, 431-3170) gets a serious facelift. Thanks to some hard work (by an entirely north end crew) the already homey-feeling hangout has become ever more inviting, with a bright and expanded space, a new chef and summer-ready […]
Gottingen Street
Waiting on Edna
The legacy of jane’s on the common has made its way to Gottingen. Jenna Mooers—whose mother Jane Wright was behind the beloved north end eatery—is following suit, opening a similar, tapas-style restaurant next door to jane’s next door at 2053 Gottingen Street. For Mooers, the new location is what’s most exciting. “Halifax traditionally has been […]
Second Base scores
Just when we thought Plan B Merchants’ Co-op (2180 Gottingen Street, 406-1254) couldn’t fit anymore interesting, perplexing, wacky and beautiful things within its four walls, Second Base Goods slides in with some damn fine duds. The city’s newest thrift shop opened within Plan B last week (hang a left once you’re inside), bringing with it […]
Propeller Brewery bubbles over
You’ve probably scratched your head more than once wondering how in the name of hops Propeller does all that it does out of it’s current home in north end Halifax—I certainly have. So, it wasn’t a surprise when this morning brought news that beloved local beer master Propeller Brewing Company (2015 Gottingen Street, 422-7767) will […]
St. Patrick’s-Alexandra development OKed
Civil rights activist Rocky Jones strolled up to the podium at the Peninsula Community Council Monday, with a newspaper in hand, and read a headline with disappointed defeat, “Winner emerges in bid for the St. Patrick’s Alexandra site.” City staff recommended a residential and commercial proposal from Jono Developments, trumping two other residential pitches from […]
Condo residents object to proposed Reflections move
Some north enders received a note in mail last week urging them to “maintain the integrity” of the neighborhood by signing a petition to reject Reflections’ application for cabaret license on Gottingen Street. The bar is applying for the license as part of their move to the old Marquee location, after their Sackville Street spot […]
Some say Gottingen Street t-shirt is inappropriate
Gottingen Street is sometimes referred to as “Gotta-get-a-gun Street, and now that sentiment is available on a t-shirt (men’s sizes S to 2XL) thanks to the Dartmouth Clothing Company. According to the company, the word “Gottingen” in the shape of a gun is intended as a statement about the higher level of gun violence in […]
Gottingen Street changing in big ways
There’s a new energy on Gottingen Street, and that energy is playing out in all sorts of interesting and positive ways. There is big news this week for the street: A north end business improvement district is being formed. And there is big almost news for the street: a full dental clinic has been outfitted, […]
The changing face of Gottingen Street
A construction fence has gone up around the old Diamond’s Bar on Gottingen Street, and workers are tearing out the insides of the building right now. It looks like the whole thing will be coming down in the next few days. Next to be razed is the former Mitchell’s Environmental Treasures building three doors down. […]
Gottingen Street eyesores to be removed
[image-1] Two eyesores on Gottingen Street are coming down. The former Mitchells Environmental Treasures and Derby/Diamonds Bar buildings will be torn down in coming weeks, confirms Ross Cantwell of the Housing Trust of Nova Scotia. The trust acquired both properties and is now going through the permitting process to build an affordable housing complex on the Diamond site. A similar proposal will later be floated for the MET site, but there are economies of scale in razing both buildings at once. Taking down the MET building is complicated, says Cantwell. There is an enormous amount of junk in the building,
Saint Leonard’s Society to build transitional housing project on Gottingen Street
The operators of the Metro Turning Point homeless shelter are planning to build a four-storey transitional housing project on Gottingen Street, at the corner of Cunard, on what is now an empty lot next to the Company House bar. Ross Cantwell, who is the brain behind several other Gottingen-area projects, says he has been working […]
Gottingen Terrace moves forward
There are three housing developments in the works along Gottingen. The first is a horrendous looking apartment complex going up at the corner of Falkland (Hello! Street level parking garage?!), the second the more-promising Theatre Lofts project just to the north. But the third is the most interesting on the street. Gottingen Terrace is the […]
