Upcoming Concerts: James Blunt, A Simple Plan
Today, two big concert announcements popped into my email inbox: James Blunt will be coming here on Sunday November 27, playing a show to the moms of Halifax at the Metro Centre. Also, did you know that A Simple Plan are still a band? They are, and they are playing here Sunday February 26, 2012. […]
Elliot Brood are Coming
The direwolves of rock in Elliot Brood are coming across the narrow sea to the Seahorse to play a show for you and the realm on Friday November 25 at the Seahorse. Support TBA. The cost is but a paltry 15 of your gold coins. Winter is coming, so don’t tarry. Saddle your horse and […]
Metallica is Probably Playing Citadel Hill on July 14
The Chronicle-Herald just posted a story linking back to an update on the Atlantic Canada Rocks website that says Metallica is more or less confirmed to play Citadel Hill on Thursday July 14. Apparently things are being held up by delays in confirming opening acts, although – calloo callay – Three Days Grace has been rumoured as the opener. The post, written by an “unnamed source,” claims the official announcement will be coming down the pipeline later today or tomorrow. However, the Herald spoke to another unnamed source who says the announcement will be coming tomorrow, not today. Considering
Anvil Comes to Halifax
Metal grandpa heroes Anvil – who returned to prominence last year with the release of the very funny/touching documentary ANVIL: The Story of Anvil – are coming to Halifax to play the Paragon Theatre on May 10. Looks like things might be all right for the Paragon for now? Tickets are $25 ($30 at the door) and go on sale this Friday at 10am through all Ticketpro outlets, including United Bookstore (1669 Barrington St), Video Difference (6086 Quinpool Rd & 1239 Bedford Hwy), Alderney Landing (2 Octerloney St) and CD Heaven (118 Wyse Rd), by phone at 1-888-311-9090 and
Oh Dear
oh man…. You can exhale now, everyone – the “Music as a Weapon” tour, featuring Korn, Disturbed, Sevendust, In This Moment and something called a Stillwell is coming this way on April 5th at the Metro Centre. I used to jam on Life is Peachy back in the late ’90s. When you are a weird bookish person with your gaggle of awkward and shitty friends in the burbs, and punk has not yet entered your consciousness, and all you have is MuchMusic and the Edge 102.1 as your music radar, you will end up listening to Korn. I liked that
Review: Madonna: Songs of Mary by Xara
I don’t know a lot about music, but I know what I like, and I like the otherworldly sound of Xara. The Christmas offering, Madonna: Songs of Mary was performed in front of a packed house (500 people!) in the gorgeously ornate St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The audience let the last stunning note hang momentarily […]
Best Thing To Happen In Halifax In The Past Year
OK, there were plenty of concerns in advance of the show: the cost, how the Common would look, all of that. But Saturday, July 11 was a perfect summer day, and, in case anyone had forgotten, the man was a Beatle. The biggest community love-in of the summer gathered to sing along with “Eleanor Rigby,” […]
Best Sign We’re Almost on the Radar
Call us the Chowder Belt. Yeah, we’ve had a few high-profile Boomer icons play in town in the recent past, including KISS, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Neil Young (twice), with Art Garfunkel coming soon. But what we’ve really noticed is how we’ve become such an essential stop for those working musicians whose shine is […]
Stumped on the Common
To the editor, After the McCartney and KISS concerts, there will be an all-summer effort to repair the damage to the Common just in time for winter. We have not been doing very well getting event damage repaired, have we? Witness the two- or three-time gap in the mature trees lining the north side of […]
Fighting to Clik into place
On a bitter March evening, a few dozen folks huddled into Venus Envy on Barrington Street to listen to Lucas Silveira play an acoustic set. He previewed a few tracks from The Cliks' then-forthcoming album, Dirty King. Silveira revelled in the intimate setting, cracking jokes about pictures popping up on Facebook of him playing against […]
Concerts rouse a city on the Common
They sacrificed a VirginFest last Saturday. When The Tragically Hip pulled out of the outdoor music festival due to a family crisis, concert promoters offered a free show instead. In a summer conspicuous for its abundance of both rain and big concerts, the free-ticket offering seemed sure to at least guarantee a full house. But […]
