Saint Mary’s University (SMU) is continuing to celebrate 50 years of women’s varsity sport at the university with their annual monthly speaker series, called “She Leads the Game: Women Shaping Sport Business.”
The series will feature women who work in the field of sport business, including executives, journalists, broadcasters, writers, institute chairs, researchers and business owners. The series begins Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7pm, with speaker Lorraine Lafrenière, who is CEO of the Coaching Association of Canada, and will continue one Tuesday every month until April. Here’s a full list of speakers and topics coming up:
- Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7pm: CEO of the Coaching Association of Canada and committee advisor on safe sport, gender equity and inclusion, Lorraine Lafrenière, will discuss “strategies to foster a holistic view for life and career.”
- Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7pm: Journalist, academic and sports activist, Shireen Ahmed, will discuss “maintaining authenticity.”
- Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7pm: Researcher and academic chair, Ann Pegoraro, will discuss “busting myths about women in sport: what the research tells us.”
- Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7pm: Sport New Brunswick CEO and research associate at the Scott McCain & Leslie McLean Centre for Sport, Cheryl MacDonald, will discuss “transitioning from academia to industry.”
- Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 7pm: Sports management leader and hockey play-by-play announcer, Isabelle Germain, will discuss “life after competitive sports: from athlete to behind the scenes.”
- Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 7pm: Founder of the Floatation Centre Health and Wellness, Lindsay MacPhee, will discuss “the benefits of floatation therapy and holistic wellness for athletes.”
- Tuesday, Apr. 15 at 7pm: TBA
The series is organized by SMU alumni and current staff member, Quinn MacDonald, who completed an honours degree in psychology and a certificate in health, wellness and sport in society at SMU in 2024 and is the current operations specialist at the university’s Scott McCain & Leslie McLean Centre for Sport, Business and Health.
