To the editor,

Please get off the green mythology wagon that says government has to pay for all solutions to the environmental crisis that we, as consumers, have created.

I am highly concerned about global warming and the health issues that an increase in bicycling would help to address, but I am sure that the solution is in both government leadership and in the public buying in. Users paying for bike licences would validate our place on the road and remind cyclists

of our responsibilities. (See Lezlie Lowe’s “Fee wheelin'” column, November 1.)

Take a page from Holland where cycling is not just recreation—it is a way of life and the primary mechanism for commuting. The Dutch have to pay for licences and so can we. Let’s participate in the solution.
