Kristin Johnston Credit: via Bikram Yoga Halifax

This weekend brought the tragic news of the death of yoga instructor and passionate entrepreneur Kristin Johnston. Yesterday, the Halifax Regional Police released that the 32-year-old and former owner of Bikram Yoga and 42° Fitness and Wellness, was the victim of Saturday’s homicide on Oceanview Drive.

After a trip to Halifax inspired her to move here, Johnston—a Montreal native—opened the city’s first yoga studio to offer the Bikram series in late 2011, turning the heat up on the city’s hot yoga scene to a sweltering 42 degrees. As Bikram blossomed, her efforts as an instructor and business owner were recognized by the masses— and Coast readers, whose votes earned her repeat Best of Halifax hardware for both Best Yoga Studio and Best Yoga Instructor.
In early 2016, Johnston refocussed and expanded her Bikram-inspired vision, rebranding her studio as 42° Fitness and Wellness before making the difficult decision to close the business in late February.

Tonight at 6pm, north end yoga studio RIO (5781 Charles Street) will honour Johnston’s life, and light, with a silent meditation.

The Coast sends its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and many students of Kristin Johnston. Her energy, creativity and drive will be missed.
