
Ban the big rigs
An 18-wheeler truck parks and takes the space of three or four cars in a no-parking zone near my home to deliver one or two small boxes to a restaurant. This is happening on a daily basis. I have observed similar deliveries being made all over the downtown area of Halifax by 18-wheelers.
Enough already! Such deliveries should be made by small panel trucks: 18-wheelers need to be banned on the peninsula of Halifax. They are dangerous, take up precious space when parked, make excessive noise with their diesel motors and are totally unnecessary. Have you ever observed an 18-wheeler negotiating the turn at Barrington Street and Spring Garden Road? Most times the rear of the vehicle crosses over the sidewalk, which is full of pedestrians, strollers, walkers, etc. This is an unacceptable risk to the safety of our citizens.
A truck route needs to be established which can be used by 18-wheelers to go between the container ports and the highway. If they are required, in exceptional situations, to bring large loads into the downtown, a fee should be charged and the vehicle should be under escort to ensure our safety. This will encourage the transporters to make the loads efficient and less frequent.
I have spoken to mayor Mike Savage and my councillor Waye Mason about this, and both agreed with me regarding the noise and the serious safety issues. I challenge them and the other HRM councillors to move into an action mode on this one before it is too late. —Suzanne Hastings-James, Halifax
Dal and racism
Let me see if I understand what’s going on in Maggie Rahr’s story (“Racism reversal at Dalhousie University,” The City section, October 19). It’s OK for Masuma Khan to be racist against white people, but not OK for people to be racist against her?! Correction

I’m just curious to find out where you think all of the things you take for granted come from? Chances are they were transported via tractor trailer and or ship. It would take 3-4 box trucks to carry that 1 tractor trailer load that makes multiple stop’s and with the current rates for trucking, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and other related trucking costs the company would not be able to stay a float if they had to pay for 3-4 extra trucks, employee’s and all of the other related costs. With Halifax being a port city it thrives off of the ship’s that enter the port and deliver affordable product’s to everyone also export our product’s to other countries that rely on us. These trucks travel on 2 route’s none of which have schools, hospital’s, or much residential or retail area. The biggest issue that i have seen around these commercial vehicle’s are the careless people that are around them, yes they are big, yes they are noisy, yes they may have to sometimes use a curb to get around a corner, yes they take more time to stop but i personally believe what you are asking for is just an incovenience kind of thing because you may not like them. The port is what keep’s Halifax thriving without it all of Nova Scotia would suffer. A designated route for truck traffic? They already have that, one route in and one route out.The only other option would be residential and to me that would be more of a safety issue having to travel through school zones, hospital zones, and residential area’s that children play in.I rely on the trucking industry to feed my family, I know what it take’s to drive these truck’s in tight area’s, I know how much responsibility is on these driver’s shoulder’s, I know what is involved in keeping the equipment safe for the road as safety of everyone is #1, my father relied on the industry to take care of his family, my grandfather relied on the port industry for his family, and his father relied on it as well, Not to mention the rest of Nova Scotia and Canada. I see 2 option’s, Let them roll or shut Halifax down, What do you think will happen?
