deadmau5 to me
I love Canada and I particularly love our city. That's why I was so excited to take in the free Canada Day concert on the Common. But unfortunately I came away, overall, disappointed. Not with all of the performers, but with some. And unfortunately I couldn't stay for deadmau5.
Best artist of the night was Reeny Smith. Professional act, great stage presence and clearly excited to be performing. Only way I could describe Izabelle was "rough" and doing just three or four tunes makes one wonder why she was even performing. I was really looking forward to the Stan Rogers tribute by Neptune artists, but the sound production was downright terrible. Equally disappointing were the two or three people hosting the overall event. Apart from saying expressions such as "give it up for" or "let's hear it Halifax," they exhibited no understanding of their role in entertaining the crowd of some 20,000. Halifax can do a lot better with better upfront planning. Let's make sure we don't repeat this in the future. —Bill Murphy, Halifax
Not to be forgotten
On your timeline of notable historic events, you missed the Vatican Concordat of 1610 that recognized the Mi'kmaq as the first Catholic Nation recognized in North America ("Over 150 years of absolute bullshit," posted at thecoast.ca by Team Coast, June 30). It allowed us to do trade with Europe. We have a wampum.
My grandparents were forbidden to read. British troops would raid homes to take all books and bibles to burn them. My great grandfather paid a girl to come from Montreal to teach his kids to read in secret. My grandma was her first student. Both my parents grew up hiding crosses and rosaries as well as Acadian flags from the British inspectors who visited their schools. When the priest took over the schools they beat and molested the kids. Things were done to make us forget the Vatican Concordat. We never did. —posted by Louisette Lulu Lanteigne at thecoast.ca
