HAVE PETS?

Nova Scotia SPCA reminds owners to avoid fireworks tragedy for your pet.  The day after the Canada Day weekend, almost every call to Nova Scotia SPCA offices begins with “Last night during the fireworks, my dog…” broke his leash, slipped his tether, ran through the screen door, crashed a window, dug under/ jumped over the fence; in short, fled – from the comforts of home and/or owner – in panic. It may seem strange, but more domestic animals are terrified by fireworks than any other single thing and they become willing to do anything to escape the noise. Even an animal that hasn’t reacted in previous years can become unexpectedly fearful, especially an aging pet.

  1. Where’s the best spot to view the fireworks these days? As a kid we used to watch from Citadel Hill, but on my last time there the view was blocked by tall buildings. Where exactly do they shoot them off from?

  2. I think they shoot them off the bridge, so the waterfront is your best bet. Get there at least a half hour early otherwise you’ll be stuck behind people.

  3. Whaat?? don’t be ridiculous, they don’t shoot them off the bridge, they’re shot off a large boat or barge. They’d need to shut down the bridge for hours/days just to prepare. The city would not ever shut down a bridge just for a fireworks show.

  4. I don’t know where the fireworks were coming from exactly but it was a very poor Fireworks display. Far too close to the ground for everyone to see… we were in Dartmouth on the walkway between NSCC and Alderney Landing. Always a superb site to watch fireworks … not so last night … very disappointing … Until the last two or three, there was absolutely nothing to applaud or aaahhh over … the silence was deafening! Alderney Gate was mayhem as we witnessed following the fireworks … lots of police cars, lots of police, no control of traffic walking or driving … this was following a shooting and a stabbing we understand but …. gotta do better folks!!!
