It’s official as of this morning: Celine Dion is bringing her world tour through Halifax to play the Common on Saturday, August 23, 2008. This ends months of speculation and hilarious-to-watch struggles between mayor Peter Kelly and the professional concert planners at Events Halifax over how to follow-up to September 2006’s Common concert with The Rolling Stones. Although booking Dion plays to Kelly’s base of middle-aged suburbanites, it’s not yet known how much he had to do with getting the show. Or exactly how much credit he will try to take.
There’s also no word on Celine’s openers. But if the cockamamie line-up at the first Common show (Stones, Kanye, Sloan, Cooper) is anything to go by, it could be anyone. Well, anyone but AC/DC, since the diva is known for bringing the rock herself. Here’s her version of “You Shook Me All Night Long,” a piece of footage that inspired a YouTuber to comment “This video has led me to believe the world must end.”

FUCKING AWESOME CELINE IS HARDCORE.
I won’t bother to blog about it, but you know, as per usual MO, the mayor and council inked this deal completely behind closed doors, which served no purpouse at all. (I mean, really, how can they dream up a reason, any reason, to do this secretly?) Except: now they (rightly) get sole blame if/when this turns out to be a disaster. Public discussion has its benefits. Maybe one day Halifax politicians will figure that out.
Noooooooo…….please…..NOOOOOOOOOOO……… (cries)
